BrahMos-I Block III

Indian Army's new Mountain Strike Corps will be equipped with a regiment of the BrahMos cruise missile that is capable of engaging and destroying targets hidden behind mountains.

"The steep dive BrahMos will be the most lethal weaponry for the Mountain Strike Corps, christened 17 Corps, which will have an operational tasking for offensive, cross-border military operations on the disputed mountainous boundary with China," a report appeared in Arming India, a widely read blog in the defence fraternity today said.

"The 'steep dive' variant of the 290-km BrahMos missile was validated in test-firings conducted on May 8 and 9 in the Andaman Islands. It has very sharp maneuver capability to hit the target at 90-degree angles or to attack 'right over the head' or 'from the top'," the report quoted senior military officials as saying.

"Networked with sensors, including satellites, this terrain hugging missile can be guided through very sharp maneuvers at supersonic speed touching upto Mach-3 (three times the speed of sound) to hit targets cradled between Himalayan peaks up to 290 km away," the official said.

The deployment of the BrahMos on the China front will lend more muscle to India's military posture on the volatile boundary.

"This will be the fourth regiment of the BrahMos in the Indian Army, and its induction will begin in three years," the report said.

The go-ahead for the steep dive BrahMos induction was given at the highest levels in the government in 2011. This cruise missile regiment configured for offensive mountain warfare will cost Rs 4,100 crore. These costs also involves construction of special storage facilities for these missiles in high-altitude areas, including Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir abutting the Line of Actual Control (undemarcated, disputed border) with China.

The steep dive variant required breakthrough modification in guidance software in the missile's on-board computer. "Some design changes also had to be made to regulate the flow of fuel during steep dives," the report said. With its 90-degree angle-of-attack capability, this is also being projected as an aircraft carrier killer, with an obvious application for the Indian Navy.

The three BrahMos regiments already inducted in the Indian Army have reportedly been deployed in the plains and the desert. The steep dive variant makes the BrahMos relevant to mountain warfare, and will give the much-needed teeth to the Mountain Strike Corps.

"A preponderance of firepower is integral to this corps, which is meant to deter Chinese aggression. The acquisition for 145 M777 ultra light howitzers from the U.S.-arm of BAE Systems has also been initiated for this "sword arm" formation against China," said Arming India.

Aircraft carrier killer like chinese ASBM . technically both are different leagues but its satisfying that we are developing it. Kudos to navy

Such a sexy weapon. Once I was role-playing with my girlfriend I called my yea a brahmos. Sorta ruined the mood tho...

Thats an issue we 'defense enthusiasts' all face, for others its just a 'plane' or 'jet' or 'machine gun' or 'bazooka' , but for us it would be a 'B-737' or 'Su-30MKI' or 'RCL' :p

Yea. How can people not tell the difference from a M-4 and AK-47?! I bet car enthusiasts feel the same when people say they have a Audi or Toyota, or simpler still a SUV :(:(

Brahmos is a private enterprise, being run for profit same as any other business. The more Brahmos they sell , the more money they make.
Question is...is Brahmos really worth it. I think noy.

Well it's a consortium between Russia and India so no matter who buys it at the end India makes money since they are built in India, and any advancement gets trickled down to other missile programs.

the fact that Russia induct 0 Brahmos while Indians brag so much about it speak volumes about this wonder weapon...

SO jf 17 in PAF??? Brahmos fits for our requirement... if they didn't inducted, does that mean missile is less capable??? what kinda logic is this...

It mean that the joint effort is set up for transferring of tech. Brahmos is a downgrade version of an existing missile. It's downgraded for export to India. At this point, India should upgrade this missile without Russian input if it wants to claim ownership of the weapon...

You feel whatever you want..... mr, Luca...(may be chinese).. you are no one to suggest what we should do....

Though technically BrahMos is a Private limited company, its owned jointly by DRDO of India and NPOM of Russia.
The betterment of India is the primary aim of DRDO, the majority stake holder, and obviously, making money is part ofthe deal:p

And about the worthiness of BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile which is accurate and versatile isn't worth enough for you? Seems like your problem buddy:p

1. The Russian and Indian doctrines are different. Their main enemies aren't sitting next to their doors (as in India's case) but thousands of miles away.

2.BrahMos is based on the Russian Missile P-800 Oniks, with the Russian contribution mainly on propulsion and Indian contribution on navigation. Russia inducting BrahMos means, they would be outsourcing tech from India to their country. They would avoid that to the best I guess.

3. The very idea of BrahMos as far as India is concerned was to form a JV to put in our expertise along with expertise of an experienced player in the areas we lacked to build a tailor made, world class weapon at home, in which we succeeded. BrahMos is a game changer for India.
