Xiaomi takes on iPhone 6 Plus with larger Xiaomi Note

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi unveiled a new phone this afternoon at a launch event in Beijing. Departing slightly from its emphasis on budget phones in the US$130 to US$320 price range, the new Xiaomi Note is a higher-end device designed to take on the iPhone 6 Plus. (Update: The event has now ended. Xiaomi Note starts at RMB 2,299 for the 16GB model, which is US$370. In contrast, the iPhone 6 Plus starts at US$980 in China. There’s also a Xiaomi Note Pro that comes with a higher resolution 2K screen, which costs $530. Added in full specifications below.)

Speaking on stage, Xiaomi CEO and co-founder Lei Jun compared the new Xiaomi Note to the dimensions of the iPhone 6 Plus, saying that the new Note is 0.15mm thinner, 11g lighter, and a fraction shorter. It comes with a bigger screen than Apple’s giant phone (5.7-inch versus 5.5-inch), but manages to be only 0.2mm wider thanks to less hefty bezels. There’s also a Xiaomi Note Pro that ups the screen resolution from 1080p HD to 2K HD.

The Xiaomi Note swaps out the company’s usual plastics for an emphasis on metal and glass. The edge of the phone is a metal band, and the glass seems to curve gently downwards at the edges. It comes in either white or black.

The Xiaomi Note – not to be confused with the budget Xiaomi Redmi Note – creates a new flagship phone for Xiaomi above its Xiaomi Mi4, which was launched last summer.

Xiaomi introduces headphones and streaming TV box alongside new phone

The new Xiaomi Note smartphone wasn’t the only new gadget Xiaomi revealed at its press event in Beijing today. High fidelity headphones and a new tiny video streaming box were also unveiled.

Xiaomi’s Mi Hi-Fi Headphones come in at RMB 499 (US$80), sporting 50mm Beryllium speakers that are 25 percent bigger than the average headset, according to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. The 32-ohm impedance headphones boast silver plated wires to reduce interference and maintain high fidelity sound. The headphones come in black leather with shiny gold metal. Notable Chinese musicians including James Li helped fine-tune the sound. The headphones are designed to work especially well with the new Xiaomi Note’s HiFi playback hardware.

The earpieces are interchangeable, allowing the listener to choose between on-the-ear and over-the-ear styles.

In addition, at the end of the ceremony, Lei unveiled a mini set-top box that doubles as a smart plug and a charger. Set to go on sale in China on January 20, the palm-sized cube sports Bluetooth 4.0, a quad-core CPU, and dual-band wifi. Users who purchase the device will also get access to content distributed or licensed by GITV. Lei added that the device is designed for casual media consumers, whereas Xiaomi’s premium set-top boxes are better suited for those who want to play games or use apps. The box is priced at RMB 199 (US$32).

Being able to easily listen to music is one of the main reasons people like smartphones.

We have been waiting so long for this day to arrive. Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Xiaomi Note flagship. This will be first device in the new lineup and will pack in top end features which will definitely blow your minds away.

Xiaomi Mi Note Hands On
January 15, 2015

Xiaomi has just announced their highly anticipated new device, which is Xiaomi Mi Note and another high-end version of it – Note Pro.

As you can see, the device has some design inspiration from the company’s own Xiaomi Mi4 as it has 3 capacitive keys on the front bottom, metal farm and white plastic back. However, the Mi Note has something new to offer, which includes a 3D glass (on the high-end version) and 2.5 glass (on the lower-end version). Moreover, there is a 4Mp Ultrapixel camera sensor on the front, which is the same as the one on the HTC One M8. What is more, the device spots an interesting back design, which is curved. It provides a great look and better grip for a user. In addition to this, there is a 13mp camera sensor provided by Sony (most likely IMX214), which is also equipped with the OIS and dual tone dual LED flash setup. We are happy to see that the camera sensor and its lenses remain flat with the surface of the back. All of this beauty sits in a fairly compact body for the 5.7 inches phablet device: 55.1x 77.6 x 6.95mm. In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus measures 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm. As usual, the Xiaomi was happy to make a lot of iPhone 6 comparisons, where their new flagship phablet wins.

Besides a great design, the Xiaomi Mi Note and the Note Pro have a flagship grade specs. If we start with the regular Note version, it has a Full-HD screen (1080 x 1920), which has a pixel density of 387 ppi. Inside the device, there is a quad-core 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with Adreno 330 GPU, 16/32 GB of storage. Also, the device has a support for dual 4G SIM cards and has 3GB of RAM. What is more, the Mi Note packs a QuickCharge 2.0 technology, Hi-Fi ESS ES9018K2M DAC high performance two channel 32-bit mobile Hi-Fi Audio chip, all of this is powered by the 3,000 mAh battery and being run by the MIUI skin on top of the Android 5.0.

The high-end version will feature the almighty Snapdragon 810 64-bit chip, 2k 1440×2560 pixels screen, 4 GB of Ram, 64 GB of storage and all other features already included in the regular Mi Note version.

Lei Jun dishes on Xiaomi’s “open and inclusive” smart home strategy

Today in Beijing, Xiaomi unveiled three new consumer-facing devices that will surely excite the company’s fans and followers: the Xiaomi Note phablet, a pair of headphones, and a mini set-top box. But from a strategic perspective, Lei’s least sexy announcement was arguably its most important.

At the start of the keynote, Lei disclosed the company is developing an attachable module that can turn any dumb household device – an air conditioner or a coffee machine – into a smart device. The module can be purchased and used by any vendor, large or small. The unit, which costs RMB 22 (about US$3) in capital, will be given out to any device maker who wants it. In turn, users will be able to control the third-party (but partially Xiaomi-powered) device from an all-encompassing app.

This technology is far from new. It’s not uncommon for startups to release gadgets and accompanying software that use infrared technology, for example, to turn on coffeemakers or DVD players through wifi. The concept of an all-encompassing app, or a unifying cloud platform for the smart home, is also not new. It recalls Apple’s HomeKit, and Chinese internet companies like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent are all trying to get hardware makers to use their cloud services. But neither of those three companies have the critical hardware touchpoint that Xiaomi does – the smartphone.

Details of how the module will be distributed remain scarce, and we’re working on learning more. But even with missing pieces, announcement is significant because it confirms Xiaomi’s strategy for penetrating Chinese households (as well as households in Brazil, Indonesia, India, and elsewhere). Instead of building out a closed or semi-closed smart home ecosystem, Lei wants everything that can be smartified to be smartified by Xiaomi, and centrally controlled by one of its smartphones.

%E5%B0%8F%E7%B1%B3%E6%89%8B%E6%9C%BA%E7%9A%84%E5%BE%AE%E5%8D%9A_%E5%BE%AE%E5%8D%9A-720x399.jpg

Lei highlighted that three pain points exist in the status quo smart home market – syncing is complicated, every piece of equipment requires a standalone app, and cloud services are difficult. By providing its cloud services to third-parties, Lei believes Xiaomi can help solve these problems.

The intended effect of this strategy is to make Xiaomi phones more sticky. Xiaomi smartphone owners benefit because the pool of supported smart gadgets can expand. China’s dumb gadget makers benefit by being able to reach more consumers with the help of China’s number one phone vendor. Xiaomi benefits by earning increased loyalty of both of these parties.

Xiaomi’s broader ecosystem of peripheral gadgets hasn’t yet spread beyond mainland China. But if Lei’s announcement is any indication, expect Xiaomi to distribute even more smart home devices this year, along with more third-party companies using Xiaomi as a conduit for access to consumers.

One very good reason qhy Xiaomi have not even been sold oversea is their design is too close to the Apple IP'ed design, in another word, if they sell them anywhere outside China, they would been sued by Apple. Inc.

All in all, many of my friend in China and Hong Kong have msde the switch to xiaomi, its like they are cheaper version of Apple, but running android...

dont forget about the.gadget that attaches to smartphone...

I dont know what will happen when Apple release their Apple watch later this year, but i want one...

Same thing with google glasses, the reason why it sells is simply because they are and can connect to their andriod mobile device. Customer like these kind of stunt...

Stop quoting Indian sources. This thread is particularly about the new Xiaomi product. if you wish, feel free to open a new thread. About the potential lawsuits, you may check out the news about Xiaomi's CEO and COO;s remarks. They are well-aware what they are up to. Thanks.
