Guangzhou win on Away Goals

Guangzhou: Guangzhou Evergrande became the first Chinese club to win the AFC Champions League on Saturday evening as Marcello Lippi’s side secured the title on the away goals ruling after a 1-1 draw at Tianhe Stadium saw the Chinese Super League champions draw 3-3 over the two legs of the final with Korea Republic’s FC Seoul.

Brazilian striker Elkeson gave Guangzhou the lead in the 58th minute with his sixth goal in six AFC Champions League games, only for Dejan Damjanovic to level the scores four minutes later to crank up the tension at the Tianhe Stadium.

But Choi Yong-soo’s side could not find their way through the home defence a second time to claim the goal needed to keep the trophy in Korean hands and Guangzhou became the first Chinese side since Liaoning in 1990 to be crowned Asian club champions.

Guangzhou will now represent the Asian Football Confederation at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco next month having added the AFC Champions League to the Chinese Super League title they retained at the end of October.

The Chinese side were deserved winners having dominated throughout with FC Seoul unable to register a first half chance of note as the home team controlled the tempo during the majority of the opening period.

Zhao Xuri, brought into the team at the expense of Gao Lin, headed Sun Xiang’s cross from the left over the bar in the 11th minute after an impressive build-up by the home side and, five minutes later, Dario Conca shot on the turn clipped the base of the post.

Lippi’s team dominated possession, forcing the Koreans to sit deep as Guangzhou created – and spurned – and increasing number of chances. Conca’s shot from long range was just wide while Kim Yong-dae dropped to his right to push Elkeson’s effort away for a corner.

Elkeson’s attempt at a scissor kick also failed to hit the target in the 27th minute while Zhang Linpeng, who delivered the cross for the Brazilian’s effort, was booked six minutes later for an over-exuberant challenge.

Zhang was joined in the book on the stroke of halftime by FC Seoul captain Ha Dae-sung, who was sanctioned for persistent fouling, while Elkeson had earlier spurned an opening when he headed straight at Kim following Sun’s deflected cross.

Five minutes into the second half, Muriqui forced Kim into a reflect save with his feet after being put through on goal by Huang Bowen while Huang’s shot from range less than a minute later was straight at the visiting keeper.

Seven minutes later, though, Guangzhou finally secured the advantage their dominance deserved; Muriqui slipped the ball through the middle of the Seoul defence and Elkeson’s deft first touch put him in position to stroke the ball beyond Kim and into the bottom corner.

The home side’s lead lasted just four minutes when Sergio Escudero held off the Guangzhou defence before releasing Damjanovic who, having barely seen sight of goal all game, finished with conviction to Zeng Cheng’s right to put the game in the balance once more.

Both sides pushed for a second in the final half hour of the game but, despite increasingly frantic action, neither goalkeeper was troubled and Guangzhou held on to send the crowd of over 42,000 fans delirious.

The money spent by us is too little.

Real madrid spends 30 million as a minimum now. Breaking records for fun. Just spend 100 million on not even the best player.

Our player's wages are not 5-15 million euros a year. How can this be attractive to potential players.

We must up the wage of our players to have the best team.

Lippi is a nice move though.

ISU : Full Story

闫涵 Han Yan of China won the Men’s event in his debut at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. Russia’s Maxim Kovtun, another debutant, earned the silver medal and the bronze went to Takahiko Kozuka of Japan.
Yan reeled off a quad toe-triple toe combination and four more clean triples as well as three level-four spins in his Waltz program. However, he stepped out of the triple Axel and doubled the loop. The 2012 World Junior Champion was ranked second in the Free Skating with 155.48 points, but remained in first place overall at 245.62 points. “I was nervous in my free skating today, maybe because I didn’t skate so late. I didn’t perform the complete program, it is very hard and I didn’t show all the difficulty yet. But I am very happy that the judges appreciated my program”, the 17-year-old noted.

Kovtun’s routine to Peter Tchaikovki’s Piano Concerto No. 1 included two quadruple Salchows, two triple Axels as well as three more triples, but he doubled an intended quad toeloop. Kovtun was awarded 156.81 points and totaled 238.65 points. “To win the silver medal in my first senior Grand Prix is very valuable for me and a motivation to train harder and to win more competitions. I learned for myself that I have to work more on my second mark. Today it was already higher than yesterday and I skated more freely”, the 18-year-old said.

Kozuka fell on his opening quad toe (underrotated) and also on a triple flip, but recovered to land five triple jumps. He scored 145.30 points and accumulated 226.92 overall. “Today’s performance was the worst in my skating life. I am not injured or sick, but I need to concentrate more on my next competition”, the 2011 World silver medalist commented.

2013 World silver medalist Denis Ten (KAZ) finished fourth at 224.80 points. Richard Dornbush (USA) was fifth with 218.57 points and Florent Amodio (FRA) slipped from fifth to sixth at 213.39 points.

Yan is scheduled to compete again at the Trophee Bompard and Kovtun will go to the Rostelecom Cup of Russia. Kozuka has 16 points from his two Grand Prix events.

Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy (GER) strike gold

Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy of Germany struck gold while China’s 庞清/佟健Qing Pang/Jian Tong and 彭程/张昊 Cheng Peng/Hao Zhang picked up the silver and bronze medals.

Performing to “Nutcracker” by Peter Tchaikovski, Savchenko/Szolkowy completed a throw triple flip, a triple toe-triple toe sequence, triple twist and earned a level four for the death spiral, the side by side spin and the Axel Lasso lift. But Savchenko fell on the last element, the throw triple Axel, and both made a mistake on the side by side double Axel. The four-time World Champions scored 132.14 points and overtook Pang/Tong with 201.21 points overall. “Today’s program was a little better than the short program. This is our first competition and it is just one step to Sochi. After all we are satisfied. But we still can get a lot more points”, Szolkowy told the press.

Pang/Tong ‘s program to “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” featured a triple twist, a throw triple loop and Salchow, but he struggled with the solo jumps, singling an Axel and doubling the toeloop. The reigning Olympic silver medalists received 124 points and slipped to second at 194.38 points overall. “We skated like in training, but we had a few problems and we lacked energy”, Pang analyzed. “We didn’t feel so confident before the competition as it is our first one and this is hard for everybody. We are not at a 100 percent yet”, Tong added.

Peng/Zhang’s routine to “Yellow River Concerto” was highlighted by a quadruple twist, triple throws and level-four lifts. The Chinese team earned 122.95 points for the Free Skating and 187.19 points overall. “We are glad to have won our first Grand medal. We have been skating together for a little over a year only”, Zhang said.

Xuehan Wang/Lei Wang completed a strong showing of the Chinese pairs by finishing fourth (172.35 points). Alexa Scimeca/Chris Knierim (USA) came fifth at 161.72 points.

Savchenko/Szolkowy will compete again in three weeks in Moscow at the Rostelecom Cup of Russia. Pang/Tong’s next event is the Trophee Bompard in France. Peng/Zhang will already take the ice again next week at NHK Trophy in Tokyo.

Lexus Cup of China concludes Sunday with the Exhibition Gala.

SCG BWF World Junior Championships 2013 - China and Korea Share Spoils
Monday, November 04, 2013 - Text by Gayle Alleyne | Edwin Leung

China and Korea bade farewell to the SCG BWF World Junior Championships 2013 in triumphant fashion yesterday – each winning two individual titles – whileJapan’s Akane Yamaguchi underlined her blossoming credentials.

A week after celebrating victory in the team event, Korea wrested the Men’s Singles and Women’s Doubles championships in the individual Eye Level Cups competition at Hua Mark Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Heo Kwang Hee (centre below: Men's Singles presentation ceremony), seeded 5-8, comfortably defeated Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei, 21-11 21-12 to be acclaimed the best male junior badminton player. It was also another remarkable afternoon for his team-mates, Chae Yoo Jung and Kim Ji Won (BWF home page), who upended No. 2 seeds, Chen Qingchen and He Jiaxin of China, to capture the Women’s Doubles title. The Korean pair (seeded 5-8) – who had sealed their team’s Suhandinata Cup success the previous Sunday – won 21-19 21-15.

file.aspx

It marked a hat-trick of Women’s Doubles titles for Korea, following the repeat victories of Lee So Hee and Shin Seung Chan in 2011 and 2012. Including 2008 – when Singaporean pair Fu Mingtian and Yao Lei prevailed – this was only the fourth occasion since the inception of the BWF World Junior Championships in 1992 that a non-Chinese duo rose to the pinnacle of Women’s Doubles at the tournament.

Despite her Women’s Doubles’ loss, Chen partnered Huang Kaixiang to the Mixed Doubles crown (centre below: receiving trophy from BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer) over their Indonesian rivals, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Masita Mahmudin. The hard-fought 21-18 20-22 23-21 result must have been a gratifying measure of revenge for the Chinese who fell to the Indonesians in the decisive match of their Suhandinata Cup semi-final the weekend before.

file.aspx

In the last match of the day, Huang was unable to replicate his winning ways as he and Zheng Si Wei perished 14-21 21-13 22-20 to their Chinese team-mates, Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen, in the Men’s Doubles final.

Akane Yamaguchi of Japan – already a BWF World Superseries winner – stole the Women’s Singles spotlight, cruising to top place on the podium over her compatriot, Aya Ohori. Surely any lingering disappointment over losing last year’s final to another Japanese, Nozomi Okuhara, would have evaporated with Yamaguchi’s 21-11 21-13 blitz (centre below: Yamaguchi and presentation party).

file.aspx

A number of officials from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Association of Thailand attended the finals and presented prizes, including current BWF President, Poul-Erik Høyer, and immediate past BWF President, Dr. Kang Young Joong. Thanks to an incentive introduced by Dr. Kang, all medallists at the BWF World Junior Championships for the next 11 years will receive funding from the BWF President's Fund, in the form of scholarships, to propel their badminton development. This year’s medallists are the inaugural recipients of those prizes.
