Star Business Report

Whirlpool Corporation, world's leading kitchen and laundry appliance company, and Transcom Group, one of the renowned business houses in Bangladesh, yesterday announced an agreement to set up a manufacturing plant in joint venture to make refrigerators in the country, said a press statement yesterday.
People's growing income and quest for convenience are fueling demand for kitchen appliance and encouraging global companies such as Whirlpool to set up facilities here.
The plant, spreading over approximately 85,000 square feet area, will adhere to Whirlpool Corporation's world class manufacturing standards, coupled with Transcom Group's focus on high-quality manufacturing, business excellence and legacy, the statement said.
The plant in Narsingdi, the northeastern district of Dhaka, will manufacture a wide range of technologically advanced refrigerators for sale by Whirlpool and Transcom under their respective brands.
"Bangladesh is an important country for Whirlpool Corporation and an emerging economy where we see significant growth opportunities and through this venture we are demonstrating our ambition in this marketplace," said Samuel Wu, executive vice president and president of Whirlpool Asia.

"We are pleased to have a trusted partner like Transcom to help us accelerate our presence in South Asia and develop a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant that is capable of delivering high quality refrigerators to serve consumers in Bangladesh."
With approximately $20 billion in annual sales, 77,000 employees and 59 manufacturing and technology research centers in 2019, the USA-based appliance maker Whirlpool markets Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Consul, Brastemp, Amana, Bauknecht, JennAir, Indesit and other major brands in nearly every country throughout the world.
Commenting on the partnership, Simeen Rahman, chief executive officer of Transcom Group, said Bangladesh's growing economy and rapid urbanisation present a great opportunity to establish world-class local manufacturing unit in the electronics and appliances sector.
"We are delighted to partner with Whirlpool Corporation to set up a first-of-its-kind global joint venture manufacturing facility that will not only offer access to the best refrigeration technology but also create opportunities for local employment," she said.
"The partnership will augment Whirlpool Corporation's presence in Bangladesh and allow us to strengthen our business pursuits in the electronics and home appliances industries."
A leader in refrigeration globally, Whirlpool Corporation offers an innovative range of products to suit the needs of every family. Whirlpool Corporation and Transcom joint venture is looking forward to setting new benchmarks in manufacturing, said the press statement.
Built on a foundation of ethical values and business excellence by its Founder Chairman Latifur Rahman, Transcom Group is one of the largest, most diversified and fastest growing conglomerates in Bangladesh.
The group has a core strength in high quality manufacturing and has businesses across eight industries ranging from pharmaceuticals, beverages, foods, media, consumer products, Insurance, electronics and tea.
Transcom has its presence in 54 countries and employs more than 20,000 people.

Well so far it seems Transcom (a reputed company in Bangladesh) did the right thing, by teaming up with Whirlpool based in China. Samuel Wu, Executive VP and President of Whirlpool Asia (who arrived in Bangladesh to sign the JV) is based in China office or HK, not India.

I sure hope to Allah, Whirlpool does not import Indian components (especially their horrible compressors) to make refrigerators and Aircons locally, they will shoot themselves in the foot if people get wind of this.

The last thing Whirlpool needs as a local brand right now is getting a reputation of being an "Indian" brand.

They should actually start sourcing compressors locally from Walton, which has already invested in a very large compressor manufacturing operation.

With their cost advantage against items made by Whirlpool India, Transcom can easily take over Indian markets in China and Middle East for Refrigerators and Aircons.

Walton is already present in those markets.

The brand will live or die on its merit as BD consumers have choice.

Indian crap wont have any future in BD.

Whirlpool is a good brand. They’ll be mad if they screw up their reputation with poor quality Indian stuff. We had whirlpool fridge and washing machine back in early 2000s. They had good market share back then. I went to their showroom again back in 2016... hardly any offerings. Had to buy a sharp fridge 🤷🏻‍♂️

Talking about Kuwait showrooms then?

I can recall that we had a refurbished 240V US Market Whirlpool full size washing machine and drier since the late 90's in my family in Dhaka, we bought it of all things from a ship scrap dealer we knew. 30 years and the things are still running, we still use these off and on, kept them running with parts I take back. These things are tanks, made with such heavy gauge Sheetmetal and motors which just won't die. No electronics anywhere. :-)

In the US, I used to buy Whirlpool too for my own use, or Kitchenaid, or Maytag, all are their higher echelon brands. Even higher as a brand is JennAir, which is famous for professional cooking ranges. Lower Echelon Whirlpool brands in US are Hotpoint and Amana which start at $300 for larger plain fridges. Indesit is also an Italian refrigerator brand they bought, which are made in Turkey and Italy I think and are marketed there.

Nowadays I am leaning toward brands with a bit higher quality and larger capacity, like Wolf, higher grade Samsung/LG, GE Cafe and Bosch. These are higher echelon brands and have features like Walk in fridges, see through doors, smart fridges with menu planning, restaurant style ranges etc. There are also other ones made in Europe like Miele which has stratospheric price tags, like $12,000 fridges for 700 liter capacity.

Whirlpool making inroads in Bangladesh means our appliance market has definitely come of age.

Nah I was talking about whirlpool in Bangladesh. Our fridge was tank... we sold it to someone before we moved back to Kuwait and it’s still running 20 years strong. The Samsung fridge we bought in 2005 in Kuwait gave out after 10 years right after warranty period, it had a repair done to it and has been working since, although the seals aren’t as strong as they used to be. We didn’t buy new because we would be moving in a few years. The sharp is lying in bd unused.
I reckon now that they’re reentering market, offering will increase.
The washing machine was dud though because Bangladeshi detergent wasn’t good for that imported product. Some filter had to be replaced periodically

Every washing machine has (at least nowadays) a scum filter in the fresh water intake line that catches hair, loose thread etc. You have to clean that out every few months otherwise the stuff starts to rot and will smell.

Yeah for some reason our original 30 yr. old whirlpool washer didn't care as it had a steel drum and agitator. We used Surf Excel in small quantities. Local stuff.

The American washing powder for clothes washers uses a low-suds formula. Hand washing detergent like Surf Excel uses high suds, you have to use a lot less.

We had to train our old buas on how much laundry to load and the amount of detergent to use.

This is pretty good news wish them best of luck , but I wonder if these electronics companies can try to make things like radars also ?

Whirpool also own Hotpoint, a major player in the household kitchens appliance sector in the UK.

Ohh please we all use made in India whirlpool products which are of excellent quality, I know Non-Indians on PDF regularly remain butthurt regarding India, we all know which country is best in Manufacturing as far as South Asia is concerned, and you think that private companies don’t do quality control tests? Sure they do... but then India ko gaali bhi toh deni hai.

It's not that we bad mouth India, but Indian products definitely deserve bad mouthing if Indian manufacturers (mostly shady fly by night people) sell a substandard product.

Unlike Bhakt idiots, we have no compulsion to support Indian products even if they are bad quality.

Learn to grow a backbone and see things for what they are, trashy Indian manufactured products. Nothing more nothing less. We in Bangladesh call our own products trashy all the time.

Which by the way are still far better than Indian cheater garbage.

Have you even seen a US market whirlpool ? Ever ?? I suggest you don't talk until you do.

I have never seen kneel-down dumb-freak idiots like bhakts so intent on making some industrialist dhokeybaaj cheater rich - just because these scumbags blabber deshprem talk, wear gerua, a tilak on the forehead and a saffron colored turban.

Then they run away to London, stealing billions from Indian banks.

Everyone has Whirlpool products in India that are Made in India, poor quality causes losses to the company only. And we in India bad mouth Chinese products in India, calling them poor quality because they are, does that mean all Chinese products are also trash?

By winning the Kuwait Municipality tender order for 815 trucks, Tata Motors consolidated its position as a prominent player in the Middle East commercial vehicle market. The recent order was almost double of the previous order awarded to the company in 2011 and constitutes over 80% of the tender requirement of trucks in the heavy, medium and light categories for applications like tippers, tankers, cargo and vehicle recovery units for Kuwait Municipality. It is also the largest single order of Tata Motor’s Prima trucks and is thereby setting new benchmarks for performance and success in international markets.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rudrarup Maitra, Head – International Business, Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors Ltd. said, “Tata Motors has been selling its commercial vehicles in Kuwait for over 45 years. Tata Motors with its ILCV & MHCV truck segment platforms offers safe, efficient and comfortable means of transportation as well as unparalleled return on investment and dependability to their customers. They provide transport solutions to customers across all projects related to the oil sector and general infrastructure development in Kuwait.

The recent order is reflective of our commitment to be an integral participant in the international landscape as well. The tender will help boost brand visibility for Tata Motors and we hope to continue our long and rewarding partnership with the Kuwait Municipality. We also conducted training workshops for the 800 plus drivers to familiarize them with the vehicles, to have better drivability and performance

The TATA PRIMA designed by technology, know-how and expertise with global standards of power, durability, payload, emissions and safety will enable customers upgrade to a new-age truck, with new-age global specifications and systems, a result of customer feedback combined with years of experience in the trucking business. The range being launched today is world-smart in every sense. The TATA ULTRA is specially designed to meet the changing customer needs in the light commercial vehicle segment. It’s a BUV (Business Utility Vehicle) offering an SUV like comfort with a truck like performance and the profitability of a Light Commercial Vehicle

We are confident that through our trusted partnership with Al Zayani Company, we will be successful in establishing a long-term relationship with our customers.”

Mr Nail Zayani, Al Zayani said “The new next-generation range of commercial vehicles by Tata Motors, the Tata Prima & Tata Ultra brand is shaped by technology, and is in every sense, giving GCC customers competitive business advantages, with the trusted credentials of the Tata Motors brand. I mean WTF dude !!??

We were talking about washing machines and electronics I thought?

How did you bring in Tata Prima Truck line?

Who cares?

For your information Tata Prima is the result of Daewoo Trucks (owned by Tata now) transferring their truck tech into India, which Tata will eff up royally as well, like they have done before with MBZ trucks and the Spanish bus designer they bought.

The red truck is a ditto copy of a Daewoo truck design prior to Tata's takeover.

They friggin' 'Indianize' crap, meaning backdate technology and make parts way cheaper by using cheap-a$$ low quality components.

I am sure this Kuwait truck deal for Tata was an under-the-table-deal like most Gulf market deals are. Tata truck would never have sold these under the products' own merit.
