What's new

Kashmir is India's 'internal' issue: US envoy

2 pieces of good news in the same day.. Not bad at all. Finally Mr Krishna is earning his pay...:)

The first "good" news was highly doubtful and is in very much contradiction with the GOI's stance over Kashmir issue if true.

The second "good" news isn't something new. Amercians always claim that Kashmir violence in Kashmir is India's internal matter and than just after that advice India and Pakistan to resolve all issues including Kashmir with peaceful dialogue and discussions. So much for the internal issue thing that fizzles out in the very second line.

Any ways increase Krishna's salary, we have no issues with it..

Indeed it may and may not. The world is also changed by swimming against the currents ---what matters is how it plays in captive Kashmir and Islamabad -- As far as how it plays in the US, well, their relevance or irrelevance something Indian policy makers can decide for themselves, with a little help from others.

As a status-quoist power India is happy to push Kashmir under the carpet. As long as the world is not getting all itchy over Kashmir, it's fine for India.

The Islamabad issue have been there, will be there. The bogeyman is needed for both New Delhi and Islo for domestic audience.

Whole day is not enough for clearing this doubt ?????

It will remain an issue between the two countries, because there are very vocal domestic lobbies, that prevent it being put under the carpet.

The large Kashmiri diaspora in Pakistan - also lobbies politicians, and the danger is a crisis over it, could lead to a nuclear war, God forbid, so it is in the interest of everyone to resolve this matter.

Continuity of policies is another. I am not too politically inclined either way, but so far congress is doing ok..

I feel either party if it does gets 200+ seats like the Congress did this time around will do a fairly good job. I still believe that Atal is the best Prime Minister we had since Lal Bahadur Shastri. Manmohan is not far behind either.

Yes 200+ seats is best of this government....

Well for me Atal Bihari Bajpayi is best so far and Manhohan Singh is also good

But highly doubtful that congress gonna give another chance to Mr. Manmohan cause they want to give it to new one Rahul Gandhi now

So according to me no more Manmohan from congress site ....

You could not be more wrong -- Pakistani positions were crafted with US assistance - please do some research on this --

This is why we have said that instability is what US policy is about - Does US policy really support the idea that captive Kashmir is not to exercise the franchise the UN itself has established? No, it's much more nuanced, The US seeks to slow down the Chinese and get them to expend themselves on these silly pinpricks and therefore it offers the Indian this psychological crutch -- and really if the Indian needs it, why should we object?

Our interest and that of China remains that of creating stability and therefore will be found wanting so far as US policy makers are concerned - The Indian, I will argue, were not born yesterday, they understand in the the end, there is no getting away from having to negotiate with Pakistan, and as someone pointed out, they were close to sealing a deal were it not for US destabilization of the Musharraf regime.

By the way, were I a policy planner, I would take great succor from the Indian statement and the public's response to it - because it gives me something important to know about the psychology at work and how I may wish to influence it.

Doubt it. Rahul will not be PM - when he has power without responsibility, why screw it up by getting his flawless white kurtas into the mud of Mayawati, Lalu and co? He calls the shots irrespective of who is PM - so this suits the family well. I think the next natural candidate for the PM's post would be Chidambaram. He is like Manmohan 2.0 as it is.

A long-term solution is of no interest to ruling political class of both countries. Also the general mass have been indoctrinated in way that it'd be impossible to achieve a pragmatic solution without infuriating them. As far as Pakistani domestic lobbies are concerned, it shouldn't bother India as long as world paying no heed to them.

Ah the nuclear angle. Are Pakistanis stupid enough to make the land they so passionately fought for a barren radioactive wasteland for Kashmir? Don't think so.

Just wait and watch if they win again so he will elect them

My first choice is Manmohan followed by Narendra Modi for next PM

Won't argue with your post Muse. I was actually responding to Indian celebrations of "good" news that American envoy claimed IOK to be India's internal matter. We have seen many statements like this before too.

WASHINGTON: The United States said on Saturday that it would like Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers to discuss the Kashmir dispute when they meet in Islamabad later this month.

US State Department’s deputy spokesman Mark Tone also told journalists that the current situation in Indian occupied Kashmir was India’s internal issue and asked protesters to conduct agitations in a peaceful manner.

“We always support dialogue between India and Pakistan,” Mr Toner said when asked if Kashmir should be discussed between the two countries.

“We regret the loss of life in this incident. It is an internal Indian matter. We respect the efforts of the government of India to investigate and resolve the current situation in Kashmir,” he said, adding that the United States had always encouraged India and Pakistan to resolve all its differences through dialogue.

“In terms of the protest, we would just urge everyone to refrain from violence and conduct protest in a free and peaceful manner,” said the US official.

US terms Kashmir Valley protest India’s internal matter

But you were right with your view about American policy about Kashmir and South Asia. Thanks.

You didn't understand me, I'm not threatening a nuclear war, what I'm saying is, NATO and the Warsaw Pact - came close to full Thermo Nuclear War by accident on numerous occasions. When you have two countries, who's reaction time is minutes, there is always a danger of events overtaking policy makers.

Our nuclear arsenals are increasing year on year, pretty soon it will cross the level where an exchange would result in MAD.

Not a pretty thought, but this dispute, could be the cause of a nuclear configuration. God Forbid.....

Modi is a good administrator. And I shall be in the minority amongst Indians here but I don't like him. His govt. either systematically killed Indian Muslims or at best turned a blind eye when Indian Muslims were being killed. IMHO, he deserves to be in jail for carrying out his duties to protect Indian citizenry. Besides, he is CM of Gujurat - if he introduced prohibition throughout the country, I would have to move back abroad.

Then you would realize India intends to keep delaying negotiations on Kashmir till it talks from a position of strength. It Since 2000, India's bargaining power against Pakistan has been increasing. It is in India's interest to keep delaying it for atleast 10 more years.
