Nothing surprising actually.

This globalisation and new found affluence has clogged the roads with cars, buses and long distance trucks apart from the proliferation of new industries and SEZs.

Families who could barely afford a scooter, because of easy loans have graduated to cars and those who could have a car, now have two to three cars!

Something must be done.

That is why there is unrest amongst the locals against SEZs. Goa NGOs have planned a protest from 02 Jan against a proposed SEZ.

Booming economy is great, but then not at the cost of the environment.

I think the population of countries (especially of the third world where environmental control is not modern) which are economically stagnant or cannot afford too many cars, are lucky since the pollution cannot hit them!

I am from Delhi though not living there now.

Personally I have seen that the environment has improved from about a decade back after the introduction of the Metro trains and CNG buses and autos.

But obviously that was not enough.

this is a 1.5 year old news report and with 6.5 yr old stats..

Since I have read about this and am in Delhi so let me try and answer in defence of Delhi..

ever since the CNG has been employed for commercial vehicles, Delhi Metro for Mass transport and Enforcement of Bharat Stage 3 emission norms.. the Pollution in Delhi has dropped drastically...

Though all said and done Delhi is still polluted and the river Yamuna is in a terrible mess but I think Delhi is doing enough to combat pollution...

Vehicular pollution is just a a small part of the whole problem. Especially if you consider the pollutions from thermal power plants , industrial air / water pollution, surface / ground water pollution, domestic waste water pollution , ecological pollution due to cutting down of trees etc etc.

So even if you have convert majority of the vehicles to CNG, I dont think that there has been major change in this data for past 4 or 5 years as long as the other bigger pollutants still exist.

Thats a tall claim..i must say. It is probably similar to a claim if Mayor of New York says that he will finish the crime from the city by 2010.

The solution is not going to be easy. In a democracy there are many stakeholders and it is difficult to take any strong action. Every time there is talk of shiifting industries from residential areas or adhering to the master plan, the question of livelihood of poor people who depend on these industries is raised and is a difficult issue.

But Delhi is still a green city as such large sized cities go normally. Water and vehicular pollution is a real problem. The major reason for particulate emission (which is what this report is based on) must have been vehicle emissions which I guess has improved a lot after Metro, CNG buses and Bharat-3 norms for cars.

Especially when it does not hurt anyone, let alone Delhi.

True, with a 9% growth, one cannot have clean air!

Pakistan also faces severe pollution problems, as well as China. Basically Asia is the most polluted continent on the planet.

Pakistan too faces the same pollution issues and few cities deserve to be in 20..but they are probably still not dirty enough to secure a place in top 20.

BTW, villages in the Thar desert of India are totally pollution free! Great, what?

The Top 10 most polluted places for 2006, in alphabetical order by country:

Linfen, China, where residents say they literally choke on coal dust in the evenings, exemplifies many Chinese cities;

Haina, Dominican Republic, has severe lead contamination because of lead battery recycling, a problem common throughout poorer countries

Ranipet, India, where leather tanning wastes contaminate groundwater with hexavalent chromium, made famous by Erin Brockovich, resulting in water that apparently stings like an insect bite

Mailuu-Suu, Kyrgyzstan, home to nearly 2 million cubic meters of radioactive mining waste that threatens the entire Ferghana valley, one of the most fertile and densely populated areas in Central Asia that also experiences high rates of seismic activity;

La Oroya, Peru, where the metal processing plant, owned by the Missouri-based Doe Run Corporation, leads to toxic emissions of lead;

Dzerzinsk, Russia, one of the country's principal chemical weapons manufacturing sites until the end of the Cold War

Norilsk, Russia, which houses the world's largest heavy metals smelting complex;

Rudnaya Pristan, Russia, where lead contamination resulted in child blood lead levels eight to 20 times maximum allowable U.S. levels;

Chernobyl, Ukraine, infamous site of a nuclear meltdown 20 years ago; and

Kabwe, Zambia, where child blood levels of lead are five to 10 times the allowable EPA maximum.

The research team analyzed 35 polluted sites, narrowed down from more than 300 nominated by local communities, non-governmental organizations and local, national and international environmental authorities. The team was made up of international environment and health experts, including faculty members from Johns Hopkins and Mt. Sinai Medical Center serving on the technical advisory board of the Blacksmith Institute.
