The atmosphere we are witnessing this time was never seen in the past." Ecstatic Pakistani community.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, who will kick start his three-day visit to the United States of America on Sunday, is scheduled to address a record-setting gathering of the Pakistani community at a stadium in the downtown of the Washington DC.

The prime minister will address the Pakistani community at Capital One Arena with a seating capacity of above 20,000 persons most of which had been booked already with more people still registering themselves to attend the event.

The prime minister’s community address is distinctive in the way as previously, the visiting Pakistani leaders used to address the Pakistani expatriates in the community halls or closed door rooms at hotels.

The address is scheduled at around 1600 hours of local time.

“The atmosphere we are witnessing this time was never seen in the past. The Pakistani community, the American Pakistanis are yearning to see and listen to Imran Khan and know the concept of Naya Pakistan and what message he has brought along to America,” Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told media at Capital One Arena where he arrived to review the arrangements.

He said the community was extremely excited over the activity as summit level engagement was being held after a hiatus of five years.

“You have seen this arena. There is seating capacity of around 20,200. So far, above 19,000 people have registered themselves and some time is yet remaining for the event,” he said on Friday night terming the response as encouraging.

“There is a unique excitement. There is an ambience of gala,” he remarked. He hoped that this would be the biggest gathering in the history of Pakistani activities held in America.

Around one million Pakistani-Americans reside in the US which has also been a major source of remittances for Pakistan. During fiscal year 2019, remittances from the US stood at US $ 3.13 billion indicating significant growth over US $ 2.7 billion of the past year. According to the Eventbrite, the website where the people are registering for the event, said the event would mark the playing of Pakistan’s national anthem, along with celebratory songs to be played throughout the event to celebrate Pakistan and the prime minister.

Senator Faisal Javed, who also arrived at the venue and hopefully would moderate the event too, told media that a ‘surprise package’ documentary of around 15-minutes duration would also be played in the event encompassing the life and struggle of Imran Khan.

He said Imran Khan had a very old association with the overseas Pakistanis as they had been supporting Shaukat Khanum Hospital as well as the country through their remittances. To a question, he said the friends of Imran Khan and expatriates were sponsoring the event as they had been doing for his gatherings in Pakistan. Regarding the expected crowd, he said the Arena would stand filled to its capacity; however the management would install screens outside the venue to facilitate the people outside.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said during his visit to the US, the prime minister would carry a message of dignified Pakistan and instead of seeking aid but trade, he was coming to contest the case of Pakistan.

Pakistan-US trade had reached US $ 6.627 billion in 2018-19 – an all-time high. Pakistan’s major exports to the US included textiles and apparel, leather goods, surgical instruments, lamps, carpets, jewelry and plastics.

It would be Prime Minister Imran Khan’s meeting with President Trump at White House on July 22, who has invited him after praising Pakistan’s cooperation, that would receive major attention.

There will be two sessions at the White House. President Trump will also host the prime minister and his delegation on a luncheon.

Besides Donald Trump, the prime minister would also interact with top American lawmakers including Speaker of the House of Representatives and members of Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said Pakistan would make a pitch for moving the ties away from 18-year long Afghan war to a place where the two sides focus on augmenting cooperation in wide-ranging mutually beneficial areas.

“We want a reset in the relationship,” he explained to members of the media on Friday, while noting that the equation has moved from coercion to cooperation and from isolation to invitation.

The prime minister would speak to members of US Pakistan Business Council as well as encourage Pakistani-Americans to engage in business in Pakistan, where his government is reforming various sectors of the economy to make doing business easy.

According to Foreign Office, during his various engagements in Washington, the prime minister will outline his vision of “Naya Pakistan” and underscore the importance Pakistan attaches to a broader and multi-faceted relationship with the United States.

This is what Hussain Haqqani and Bilawal feeding to the US lawmakers ahead of PMIK visit???
Ten US lawmakers have written to US President Donald Trump, urging him to raise the issue of human rights abuses in Pakistan's Sindh -- including enforced disappearances -- during his upcoming meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan here.

In a letter addressed to Trump on July 19, the lawmakers highlight that human rights abuses, at the hands of the authorities, continue to prevail in the Pakistani province, despite Washington having provided more than USD 30 billion in aid to the South Asian country.

The aid, according to them, was supposed to improve social and economic conditions in Pakistan, as well as promote good governance -- improvements that have not occurred.

"Nowhere is that failure more evident than in Sindh Province, which has continued to suffer from numerous economic and social injustices, often at the hands of the Pakistani government," the lawmakers state.

They go on to highlight the failures and "injustices" in Sindh, including the recent outbreak of HIV in the province, enforced disappearances and the forced conversions of young girls to Islam.

Highlighting the widespread issue of enforced disappearances at the hands of the Pakistani government, the ten leaders said, "Hundreds of people in Sindh have disappeared this way, including writers, students, activists, and politicians who campaign for human rights. Some of these individuals have ended up dead, and their families have never received the justice they deserve."

They also shed light on the human rights abuse of minorities, with young Hindu and Christian girls being kidnapped and forcefully converted to Islam. They are often married off to men decades older to them, the lawmakers said.

"Other injustices in Sindh Province are deliberately carried out by the Pakistani state and its supporters," they stated.

"According to an independent Pakistani watchdog group, there were around one-thousand cases of forced conversions in Sindh Province in 2018 alone. The actual number is certainly higher. Shockingly, there are no laws in Sindh banning forced conversions," they added.

Other social injustices the Pakistani province faces is widespread medical negligence, with the recent outbreak of HIV serving as the prime example. The reason behind the outbreak is being pegged on syringes and needles being reused, as well as unsafe blood transfusions by the lawmakers.

"In one town, at least 681 people tested positive for HIV in one month earlier this year. Of these, 537 were children, including a tragic case of a 16-month-old little girl," the lawmakers claimed.

"This isn't the first time that reckless negligence has caused HIV outbreaks in Sindh Province-- in one outbreak in 2016, 1,521 people were found to be HIV positive in another part of Sindh," they added.

The lawmakers slam Pakistan, stating that the outbreak is "simply unacceptable," especially when the United States has given Pakistan USD 283 million in health assistance since 2001.

"As you seek to change Pakistani behaviour on issues like terrorism, it is essential that you also push the Pakistani government to improve the lives of its citizens," the lawmakers lastly told Trump in the letter.

The 10 lawmakers include Brad Sherman, Adam B. Schiff, Eleanor H Norton, David E Price, David Schweikert, Dan Crenshaw, Juan Vargas, Carolyn B Maloney, Jan Schakosky and Ann Wagner.

I seem to remember Modi doing these large arena meetings with the Indian- American community, I think in NY's madison square?. He had US senators and members of Congress also on stage. A good way to building consensus over his policies in Pakistan and perhaps even investments into his pet project of building a Dam. I think that was it, how's it going after his call to all Pakistanis to contribute towards infrastructure projects.

I was about to say that as well I recall the big ecstatic Modi visit in 2014 I think the Pakistanis are doing the same thing here but the local Pakistani community leaders are complete uncle garbage they dont know how to talk to policy makers or use the media here to push their message worse part is their infighting among these groups that prevents unified consensus there needs to be new blood from the 2nd gen who can walk the talk not embarrass us on the public stage

  • ‘US should compensate to some extent the huge economic losses incurred by Pakistan post 9/11’
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to negotiate a preferential trade agreement (PTA) with the United States during his visit.

In a statement issued on Saturday, ICCI President Ahmad Hassan Moughal said the removal of trade barriers and providing preferential market access to Pakistani products would double the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries.

He expressed optimism that the prime minister’s visit to the US would yield positive results for the national economy, besides bringing more US investment to Pakistan.

Moughal noted that after 9/11, Pakistan became the frontline state to fight against terrorism due to which its economy suffered huge losses.

“The prime minister should urge the US leadership to give preferential treatment to Pakistani products in its market without tariff and non-tariff barriers in order to compensate to some extent the huge economic losses,” he added.

The ICCI president also requested the US to help Pakistan in building its industrial institutions, in addition to undertaking joint ventures and investment in its various sectors.

He said the Pak-US bilateral trade in 2018 was reportedly $6.6 billion, which could improve significantly if strong linkages between the private sectors of both countries are developed.

He said Pakistan’s major exports to the US comprised of textile goods, which were only about 3pc of the latter’s total textile imports.

“There is a need to persuade the US to enhance its import of textile products from Pakistan that would contribute towards improving the local foreign exchange reserves, reducing the balance of payment issues and strengthening the economy,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention that Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday departed for his 3-day visit to the United States on a commercial Qatar Airways flight.

He will arrive in Washington on Saturday afternoon (local time) and stay at the ambassador’s residence in the city’s diplomatic enclave.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran would meet International Monetary Fund chief David Lipton and his delegation and will later have a similar meeting with the World Bank president. Later in the evening, he will attend a community event at Washington’s Capital One Arena.

His other engagements include a meeting of Pakistani-Americans investors, media interviews, addressing the US-Pakistani Business Council and a dinner meeting with selected leaders of America’s corporate sector.

WASHINGTON: The Pakistani embassy in Washington has hired the services of a leading lobbying firm, Holland & Knight, to ensure effective representation of Islamabad’s interests in the United States.

A contract was signed by embassy representatives and Tom Reynolds, a former Republican congressman from New York who represented the top lobbying firm.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi witnessed the contract signing and held discussion with Reynolds and his team members.

FM Qureshi said he was confident that Holland & Knight would be able to work efficiently with the Pakistani embassy to advance Pakistan’s interests in the US.

Reynolds thanked the foreign minister for reposing confidence in Holland & Knight and assured him of their full support in efforts to forge stronger Pakistan-US bilateral relations based on mutual respect and interests.

The lobbying team will comprise of Reynolds and other former members of congress, former senior administration officials, Capitol Hill veterans and other professional experts.

Foreign ministry officers overstate claims, PAC told

The move is being seen as a positive one for Pakistan. Despite the pressing requirements of the increasingly unique political realities of the US, the Pakistani embassy had no lobbyist in Washington DC for the past six years.

The agreement coincides with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s maiden visit to the United States since assuming office. The premier left for Washington on Saturday on the invitation of US President Donald Trump.

The premier is accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, ISI Director General Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood and Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari.

Will America Build dams in Pakistan?
we are running out of water

Its not another nations duty to give welfare to a corrupt nation.

The responsibility lies on the nation itself to be honest with itself.

what pakistan could ask America is for market access to help grow its own economy and then subsequently build dams.
