KOREATOWN (CBSLA) — Thousands gathered in Koreatown late into the night Tuesday to vote on whether to split the historic neighborhood in two, thereby giving Little Bangladesh its own neighborhood designation.

Koreatown resident James Kim became emotional as he gave CBS2 News his history in the region.

“My father and my grandfather in heaven, watching all these Korean people here, all these people voting — it’s unbelievable,” Kim said as he choked back tears. “It’s really hard for me to hold back the tears.[…] My father’s friends, they brought tiles, roof tiles imported from Korea to make it look like a Korean town.”

“It’s one thing to try to expand, but when you try to take 60 percent-plus out of the community, I think you’re saying, ‘We wanna take over,'” said neighbor Grace Yoo.

Despite the history, some say it should not preclude others from making their roots in the region known, Bangladeshi and otherwise.

“It’s not about more of the voice of Bangladesh, it’s more of the voice of diverse community,” said Maruf Islam. “Diverse community includes Latino, diverse community includes African-American, Filipinos, Koreans, Indonesian, Pakistani, Indian, all nations.”

Neighborhood councils are given thousands of dollars from the city, and they act as the middleman between the city and the community.

Those opposed to a separate Little Bangladesh council say its creation could change K-town.

“This is a huge network, huge population,” said another proponent of the new council. “We want to increase the service.”

City officials say the boundaries of Koreatown will not change if the proposal is passed.

The vote tally is expected next week.

WTF?? those bangis should leave those koreans alone and build a new town instead of taking over.

The neighborhood is big but making the Koreans emotional and the attempt to create little Bangladesh is going on for some time.

F*cking leave the Korea town to the Koreans. And make your little Bangladesh elsewhere.......Why cause such a rift? If I had the chance to vote I would've voted against it.

Just tune out the fact that it has anything to do with Bangladeshi and enjoy the shitshow!~

So, my countrymens are using old and proven East India company tactic in more legal way to take over more then half of Ktown...

If it make the local Korean upset, then it should not be done.Communal harmony and solidarity is more important than naming a neighborhood.

I have two things to say about this.

It's a dumb and tribalistic move by the Bangladeshis there. Naming a town by your ethnic place name is tribalistic enough but then growing your population in another little town and then VOTING to change your part of the town on the basis of your origin! What are they thinking?

Who cares about little things like naming anyway? It's rather shameful for Bangladeshis, how Koreans in that town showing their discontent and their history of that town, rightfully so in my view. Just grow in a town that isn't already made for someone else and name that Bangla town or something if naming things matters so much.

The other thing, which is the main point that the article and video points out though, is that a town representative gets a lot of funding for development and other purposes, also acts as a middle man between city. Which is a reason for the division of 2 towns from one. Which make sense to me as, if the Korea town most of the time have Korean representative then he would likely subconsciously invest more in parts where the Koreans live. So since a lot of Bangladeshis live in a concentrated area and the town have a lot of population, I don't see why one wouldn't want to split it to make the two communities happy and giving each of them representatives in their own towns.

bangali hamare bhai hai , unko support karna hamara farz hai.

I don't think not a single one of you are local to LAX while I am. Let Bangladeshi Angelenos decide for themselves on what they want.

The Bangladeshi population has been living in that town, raising families and owning businesses for twenty five and in some cases thirty years, they have their rights. City of LA has statutes and everything is being done by rule of local law...

It has little to do with emotion. It has to do with City law. Koreans don't get to call their own 'turf' in a foreign land. Everyone is an American and has equal rights.

This does not concern you and since you don't live in the area, you don't get to have a vote either. Sorry but that is what it is. Why so irritated if you are indeed a Bangladeshi?

No Bangladeshi American in this town (LA) CARES about the Koreans being UPSET. Right is right and fair is fair. I am sorry but we as Bangladeshis should stop this pandering and people pleasing exercise. I am happy with what local Bangladeshis are standing up for. There is absolutely nothing to lose. Same should be done in Jackson Heights, NYC as well.

You guys are oh so misinformed. Again, everything is being done via City charter.

I am amazed at seeing the sycophancy and 'on your knees' attitude in this thread. What for?? If Bangladeshis have their own area then they can get rid of Koreans as land lords and property will get to be a lot cheaper. There are SO many factors you guys don't even know...

Good, hope you guys raise as much ruckus and stink as possible with the Koreans....for as long as possible....my full support to the Koreans....and for as much division and suspicion to be formented in the long term.

Image of Bangladeshis needs to be further helped along in US (when it isnt subway underwear bomb based):
