Xi'an-Chengdu High-speed Railway to open on 6 Dec: history, today and future

Looks delicious... :woot:

So healthy. :partay:
it's amazing to see food from two cities several hundred miles apart served on the same bullet train.

This is why we say, we could enjoy a 肉夹馍 for breakfast in Xi'an, hop on a bullet train to Hanzhong City to grasp a bowl of 热凉皮 for lunch, then back on the train bound for the panda city Chengdu, have an ultimate hot pot feast!

It's not about food per se, but how we could move between different cities in China with completely different schools of cuisine.

We are now living in a giant city.

We are now living in a giant city.

A continuous nation building. This is partly what we are experiencing. I think people are just starting to notice the vastness (and increasing closeness) of their country.

This is even the case for us. Still, many of us on this side of the straits have little idea about the earth-moving changes. Changes not just on the ground, but also in mind.

I had chance to interact with some Mainland students in a class as a host teacher. I am quite satisfied with their awareness.

Looks delicious, hope one day the indian bullet train dream could be realised, and we could enjoy indian food from different states on the same train.

Yes, it's more of a symbol, especially the panda-shape rice, and the train-shape rice with panda colours.
I don't even find them delicious at all, just cute.

We don't have bullet train dream, Instead I want budget High speed rail (250 kmph) and better rail infrastructure with safety. I don't understand this need for bullet train, it is more costly than plane ticket and slower than plane.

I think its a waste of money. It is better to invest money in airports and subsidized air-travel.

No, maybe not you do but many have including PM of India.
No transport method can replace bullet train, neither air transport nor bus/slow trains.
This has been proved in China, EU and other east asian countries.

250km/h is already considered high-speed by every definition.

And to say bullet train tickets are more expensive than flights is a lie and perhaps a lie fabricated by either media or interest groups.
At least it is a lie in China where bullet train tickets are affordable and way cheaper than flights in China and even flights in india.

This railway (250km/h btw) is 600+km long, has around 20 stations.
It is serving every single city and county along the corridor, millions of people.
Can you build airports along the entire route?
No transport method is more all-inclusive than high-speed railways.
This is a consensus among transport experts who are not funded by airlines or oil companies.

With a country with billions of people, trains are the definitely the way to go. But there is a reason why trains are expensive in some countries.

With a country with billions of people, trains are the definitely the way to go. But there is a reason why trains are expensive in some countries.

The number of flights between Xi'an-Chengdu has been reduced from double dight to 2-3 per day.
I don't think they can compete with bullet trains which only cost HALF.

Such story is too familiar with me.
Along this route, short-distance coaches (150-300km) will be reduced with prices halved, long-distance flights (>500km) as I have said, will have little room except for as means of transfer.

Less we forget the uncountable social-economic benefits.
And the original railway will have more room for freight services.
Think about the time saved, the tourism boom, the business boom, industrial boom.....
We used to say, if we want to be rich, we must build road.
Today, the definition of roads in China not just include expressways, but also railroads.

Innovative ideas boost high-speed travel experience

Innovative designs have enabled the introduction of high-speed railways into mountainous regions and enhanced passengers' travel experiences.

The Xi'an-Chengdu high-speed railway, which opened on Wednesday, is the first high-speed line traversing the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi province.

As the dividing line between China's north and south regions, the Qinling Mountains have complex geological conditions and a diverse ecological environment.

Thus, 94 percent of the new railway in the area is composed of tunnels and bridges.

"The mountains are steep. The mouths of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains are usually located at the bottom of valleys and form a V shape with precipitous slopes on both sides. The steepest slope at the mouth of a tunnel is about 80 degrees," said Liu Shuangjin, general chief designer of the line's Shaanxi section, from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.

When trains travel between tunnels they are at high risk of being hit by falling rocks, which introduces a serious safety hazard, he said.

To solve the problem, Liu and his team built shields between tunnels to protect the trains from falling rocks.

The shields are disguised to make two tunnels look like a single unit.

The additional section also relieves passengers' ear discomfort when passing through tunnels.

"When a train enters and exits tunnels frequently, the air pressure changes quickly, which causes discomfort to passengers' ears," Liu said.

Another challenge for trains passing through the Qinling Mountains is the long inclines. A 45-kilometer uphill climb on the route is the longest continuous incline in the country.

The train climbs 25 meters for every 1 km it progresses. On the 45 km slope, the train climbs 1,100 meters, equivalent to a 375-story building, said Wu Bo, deputy chief designer of the railway's Shaanxi section.

"It is challenging for the bullet train and the driver," he said.

Thus, a new type of bullet train, CRH 3A, has been adopted with unique brakes that allow it to stop on steep hills without rolling backward.

According to Liu and Wu, the trains benefit from 2G, 3G and 4G reception along the line.

"A special cable has been hung in the tunnels, functioning as a signal tower, to allow passengers internet access in the mountainous region," he said.

Very well said. Inclusive development! The heart and soul of China's development.
I am happy that Mainland China has not been taken hostage by private interests that only care for profit maximization for a limited number of people/shareholders.
China is a socialist country, hence, wealth and opportunities and services must be available to all.
Among others, HSR is a social equalizer.

Quick Take: New High-Speed Rail Line Tames Terrain in Western China

1512561539719117.jpg

Photo: IC
A high-speed railway line that cuts through 658 kilometers (409 miles) of some of China’s most rugged terrain in mountainous western China officially started running on Wednesday.

The new line is expected to cut in half the time it takes to travel from the southwestern city of Chengdu to the northwestern city of Xi’an. The line’s trains can travel at speeds up to 250 kph (155.3 mph), allowing passengers to travel between the two cities in about four hours. Eventually, the line’s trains will be able to make the trip in three and a half hours, according to China Railway Corp., which runs the country’s railways.

Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, was famously the capital of several ancient Chinese dynasties, including the Tang dynasty (618-907). The journey between Xi’an to the equally famous ancient city of Chengdu has been notoriously difficult to make because of the mountains between the two cities. On older railway lines, the trip took at least 10 ½ hours.

Construction of the high-speed line, which took five years to complete, cost 64.7 billion yuan ($9.77 billion). More than 55% of the line stretches through tunnels in mountains. Seven of the tunnels are longer than 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).

The railway line also traverses the habitats of several nationally protected animal species such as the giant panda and the golden monkey. To avoid disturbing these habitats, some parts of the line were elevated, while others were built underground, according to China Railway Corp.

The opening of this line will also help reduce the travel time between Beijing and Chengdu from about 15 hours to eight hours.

Trains will make 19 round-trip trips on the line each day.

The opening of numerous expressways across Qinling Mountains was revolutionary at that time.
However, 100km/h average speed is far from enough.
Mountainous expressways are also more dangerous and more prone to weather changes.

Between Hanzhong and Xi'an, express coaches take 3-4 hours.
Once this service left every 10-15 minutes, from tomorrow the popularity would be historic.
