It's not.

It's not at all now. The Chinese navy is superior in terms of numbers and quality. They simply do not have the resources or manpower to compete, hence also the reliance on the USN.

The above was in 2014, that's six years ago. China's fleet has grown even larger.

China’s vast fleet is tipping the balance in the Pacific

In just over two decades, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese military, has mustered one of the mightiest navies in the world. This increased Chinese firepower at sea - complemented by a missile force that in some areas now outclasses America’s - has changed the game in the Pacific. The expanding naval force is central to President Xi Jinping’s bold bid to make China the preeminent military power in the region. In raw numbers, the PLA navy now has the world’s biggest fleet. It is also growing faster than any other major navy.

“We thought China would be a great pushover for way too long, and so we let them start the naval arms race while we dawdled,” said James Holmes, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and a former U.S. Navy surface warfare officer.

We don't talk about their Anti Ship Missile Capability yet.
With 540 km Range YJ-18 Missile, and 800 km YJ-100 Missile.
That's mean China Navy can shoot you before you can shoot them :enjoy:

The anti-naval capability of the Chinese military goes beyond just their navy. They're one of the few nations fielding anti-ship ballistic missiles systems, hypersonic glide vehicles and so on. If we were to focus on their navy, then in this moment in time they're the strongest navy in Asia. But even if you want to argue against this, you cannot argue that Chinese naval supremacy is inevitable. By the virtue of their giant economy and increasingly large military budget, it is just a matter of time before they leave most other nations behind. Looking to the future in mid to long term, then really only the Chinese and the Americans will have something to say when it comes to the quality and quantity of conventional arms.

Yes, if we talk about China A2/AD Capability.
Damn, the gap will be much more contrast

I mean to be perfectly honest, these systems alone could probably wipe out an entire navy. The Chinese are a force to be reckoned with today, never-mind in the future. Japan is strong, but nations like China will be in their own class.

Japanese navy used to be more powerful than China a decade ago, but since then China outbuilt all other countries, including the US. China now is the world biggest shipbuilder by a large margin.

China’s navy shipbuilders are ‘outbuilding everybody’
The second Type 075 amphibious warship, being built in Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, is about to be launched

MARCH 11, 2020

Welcome to another headache for the Pentagon — it appears China has grasped accelerated shipbuilding technologies and related aircraft development as its march toward an imposing blue water navy continues unabated.

According to the Global Times, China is reportedly set to launch its second Type 075 amphibious assault ship soon following the launch of the first one in September.

An amphibious assault ship is a type of warship which military analysts believe could play a crucial role in reunifying the island of Taiwan by force, if it comes to that, and even more are needed, the report said.

In its annual report on China published last year, the Defense Department stated that its Asian rival has more than 300 surface combatants, submarines, amphibious ships, patrol craft and other specialized vessels, the report said.

In 2019, China had a 335-ship fleet, about 55% larger than in 2005, according to a recent Congressional Research Service report titled, “China’s Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities — Background and Issues for Congress.”

“There is no doubt that they’ve been investing hugely in this,” said Nick Childs, senior fellow for naval forces and maritime security at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. “In recent years, they’ve been outbuilding everybody.”

To put it in perspective, during a recent four-year period the naval vessels that Chinese shipyards produced were roughly equivalent in tonnage to the entire U.K. Royal Navy or the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Indeed
Agree with you, my friend @Philosopher

Those people sometimes cannot move on from 2000 mindset era.

We are in 2020 now

China has more warships than Japan. Even if the number of Chinese warships is smaller, it doesn't matter. China has enormous industrial power, can build hundreds, even thousands of additional warships during the war. This is something that Japan cannot do

Japan's two carriers are much smaller than China's two carriers. Not to mention Japan isn't building more carriers like China is. Not to mention Japan ships have no AESA like Chinese ships do. Japan uses SPY-1 which is PESA not AESA. Chinese destroyers al have AESA which is more advanced than PESA.

The Japanese Navy is one of the best navies on the planet. This is very apparent to anyone that has seen them in action, The Chinese have the numbers, but quality equipment, superior tactics, effective large force engagement, training and discipline they are even better than the USN.
