Why India needs to reduce the size of its Army

Why? as long as we are a young vibrant growing economy, we can maintain or even increase our numbers. Train them and educate them for multipurpose roles. Disaster management, additional security services, military intelligence etc etc

@Echo_419

This is true.Southern command needs to be downsized,or a part of its assets transfered to chinese border.
Our army is too big atm,too many salaries, pensions, too much equipment requirements.

I disagree ; India needs a Large Army

India has NO concept of lakhs of Armed civilians like Pakistan

If Indian Army falls ; then India Falls

Hence we need a very large Army
Otherwise the Hordes from across the border will swamp the country and reach DELHI

most of our budget goes on salary and pension.we should do what china did, reduce size of army personal and increase money in r&D and defence acquisition.

I don't think in this age such a large army is required

I am thinking something more along the Chinese example a smaller but leaner army

China has No external Threat on its border that claims its territory

And Neither China has a civilisational ENEMY like India has
which has MODELED itself as the Modern " Mughal empire "
which wants to plant the Green Flag on the Red Fort

Hence it can manage with a Missile force ( Second Artilerry corps ) An AIrforce
A navy and a Nuclear force

Still China has a Large Army
BTW China has a very large Police and Paramilitary force for Internal law and Order

So their threat is Internal ; ours is external

NEW DELHI: The NDA government plans to slash the non-operational "flab" of the 1.18-million strong Army after a detailed review, both in terms of manpower as well as infrastructure, to ensure a cost-effective and leaner force with a better teeth-to-tail ratio.

Talking exclusively to TOI before he left for J&K and Siachen on Friday, defence minister Manohar Parrikar said there was "an urgent need for some downsizing in areas which are not of operational importance" due to budgetary constraints.

"The flab will be reviewed and removed... there is a requirement to re-think all aspects for a drawdown. The money saved can go towards the new mountain strike corps (MSC)," said Parrikar.

Army’s non-operational flab will be cut: Parrikar - The Times of India

Given our very long borders with difficult terrain, we can not reduce the nos much. We will need the numbers in case of war.

Of course there is merit in the argument that a leaner army but better trained and equipped will be more effective in most situations. Unfortunately not ALL and we will need numbers too...

A lot needs to be achieved in logistics and mobility and a leaner army will see the maximum benefits there.

Why not maintain a bigger reserve & srsly look at the CAPEX:OPEX budget of Army

We can always reduce manforce with technology but unfortunately that is not the case for the Indian army at the moment.
