UN commission probes Bhutto death in Pakistan

Thursday, July 16, 2009

ISLAMABAD: The UN commission set up to investigate the assassination of Pakistani former prime minister Benazir Bhutto opened its first inquiries in Islamabad on Thursday and held talks with her widower.

Bhutto, the first woman to become prime minister of a Muslim country, was killed in late December 2007 in a gun and suicide attack after addressing an election rally in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital Islamabad.

The government called for a UN inquiry after Bhutto's party won a general election in February 2008 with her supporters angered by conflicting accounts of how she died and who was responsible.

They cast doubt on a Pakistani probe into her death, criticised authorities for hosing down the scene of the attack within minutes -- allegedly destroying evidence -- and questioning whether she was killed by a gunshot or the blast.

The three-member UN panel was given six months from July 1 to investigate and is due to submit a report by end-December, but the world body stressed Thursday that any criminal investigation would be up to Pakistan.

Headed by the Chilean ambassador to the United Nations, Heraldo Munoz, it includes an Indonesian ex-attorney general and an Irish former police official.

The panel met Bhutto's widower -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari -- and other senior officials on Thursday, the presidency said.

"We approached the UN because firstly we wanted transparent and above board investigations so there are no accusations of bias," presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar quoted Zardari as telling the UN team.

"We also wanted to unearth any conspiracy to balkanize Pakistan and let the world know how a democratic leader heroically laid down her life.

"We have carried out our own investigations and the findings will be made available to the UN investigators," Babar also quoted Zardari as saying.

"The staff, working under direction of the commissioners, will gather information, collate relevant material and conduct interviews," said a UN statement released on Thursday. "The mandate does not extend to the undertaking of a criminal investigation, which remains the responsibility of the Pakistani authorities," it said.

Bhutto, the first of whose two stints as prime minister began in 1988, wrote in her autobiography of warnings that four suicide squads -- including one sent by Mehsud and another by a son of Osama bin Laden -- were after her.

She also repeatedly accused a cabal of senior Pakistani intelligence and government officials of plotting to kill her, notably in an attack that killed 139 people in Karachi on October 18, 2007 when she returned from exile.

Then president Pervez Musharraf and the US Central Intelligence Agency blamed Baitullah Mehsud, an Al-Qaeda-linked warlord based in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan, for masterminding the killing.

The commission will submit a report to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by end-December. The report will be shared with the Pakistani government and the UN Security Council.

Was Khalid Shahenshah part of conspiracy?

He was part of Benazir Bhutto's security when she was assassinated in Rawalpindi in December 2007. Khalid Shahenshah was gunned down while parking his vehicle outside his house in the southern port city, Karachi.

Khalid Shahenshah, definately giving some signals here. What they meant, you decide? This photage was minutes before suicide blast.

I think Zardari is culprit...........

There are Rumuors that Dick Chenny gaved orders to kill BB.

If I remember correctly, Dr. Shahid Masood raised this thorny point in Meeray Mutabiq (TV program). There were rumours as well that USA was upset on changed in stance of Benazir what she initially promised before returning home on key issues like restoration of CJ Iftikhar, Dr. Abdul Qadir and war on terror.

The day I heard the News Bhutto got killed, my concentration went on Zardari that very second.

What are your opinions on the following?

1 ) Should Govt. of Pakistan pay for this UNO probe? There are conflicting reports that probe will cost Pakistan 20 or 40 million of dollars. Benazir was not slain as serving prime minister unlike Rafik Hariri (former Lebanon PM). Pakistan has already paid 1.8 million$ as seed money to UNO. APP

2) Will UNO led probe be successfull in identifying 'master minds' behind this brutal act ? If leads are going towards USA, will they dare to hold USA responsible?

Hi webby, super mods & mods.

Is it possible for visitors to cast vote in the poll? Currently they can not.

I think its useless to findout who killed her. She is the Victim of the NEW WORLD ORDER.

umm...No one held Saudia Arabia responsible yet? Thats not what zardari thinks.

Has Zardari Accused Saudis For Benazir’s Assassination?

Dr. Shahid Masood’s wrote in his column in Daily Jang that Asif Ali Zardari has pointed the involvement of a Muslim country in murder of his late wife and ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Has Zardari accused Saudi Arabia in involvement of Benazir’s Assassination?

In the same column, Dr. Shahid Masood adds that the Americans shared this accusation with that country, and relations between Pakistan and that country have been strained since then. This was also reflected in a muted response by Saudis in Tokyo Conference of “Friends of Pakistan”. This perception was further strengthened due to Zardari’s inclination towards Iranians through direct and indirect contacts. Rehman Malik, who is responsible for interior affairs, went on special visit to Iran that was observed with suspicion as in obvious it was out of his Ministery’s domain. This visit was followed by Zardari himself, which might have raised some reservations from Saudis.

If we use the time tested theory that who benefited the most from BB's murder then fingers definetly point towards ZARDARI

I have no doubt Zardari was the main culprit, BUT this plan was made by USA. Baitullalah masoud might be used for this purpose, but Fazullullah clearly said we don't attack on women. Another thing which tell me a person in the car was also involve in this, since it don't make sense, BB has done her last address prior to election.. and left the ground, coming out of bullet proof car didn't make sense. Another thing which is bugging me is that, BB were a bit different from when she return then what she were when she went.

Another thing, my cousins boss did postmortem and report never came infront. then after somedays he start explaining things.. this happen that happen, but the real report which written that day never came up. So government obviously were involve or atleast hiding...

Has Zardari Accused Saudis For Benazir’s

Who knows Zardari was accusing Afghanistan for this...

UN commission: Mandate NOT To Fix Criminal Liability

Heraldo Munoz (C), head of three-member UN Commission, Peter Fitzgerald (R) and Marzuki Darusman (L) attend a meeting at Pakistan's foreign ministry in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Heraldo Munoz, the head of a UN commission investigating the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, announced here on Friday that his team would only look into ‘facts and circumstances’ of the tragic incident and not fix ‘criminal liability’. ‘

Our mandate is to look into the facts and circumstances of the assassination of former prime minister and the mandate does not include a criminal investigation,’ he said at a press conference.

He said the commission would have no authority to summon any person, but anyone wanting to share information could assist the commission voluntarily.

Analysts believe that the investigation which would cost $4 million would be a waste of time and money because the commission will only investigate the circumstances leading to the assassination and not fix responsibility.

Mr Munoz said: ‘The responsibility of the team is to investigate the crime and prosecuting the perpetrators remains with the Pakistani authorities.’

The analysts are of the opinion that the UN official’s statement will disappoint millions of Pakistanis who have been waiting for the commission for over one and a half years in the hope that it will expose the criminals.

Presidential spokesman Farhat Ullah Babar told Dawn that it was a fact-finding mission which would investigate the circumstances leading to the assassination. ‘Fixing criminal liability will be the responsibility of the government.’

However, he said, the commission had vast manoeuvrability and even if it refrained from criminal indictment it could expose and reveal facts that would make indictment a mere formality.

Mr Munoz said the mandate of the commission was wider than that of Scotland Yard.

‘The Scotland Yard had only found the cause of Ms Bhutto’s death through forensic methods, but we would ascertain the facts and circumstances of her death,’ he said.

Asked if the government had provided any information about its own investigation, he said the commission had received valuable information that would help in the investigation.

When asked if the commission would summon former president Pervez Musharraf and other persons named by Ms Bhutto in her emails as persons who could assassinate her, Mr Munoz said: ‘The commission cannot summon anyone legally because it would be a voluntary process.’

He said: ‘We would greatly appreciate the voluntary involvement and engagement of all Pakistanis in this effort. We cannot be fully successful without the cooperation of the people of Pakistan. And I need to stress at this point the key part that the media can play in helping the commission.’

He said he had met President Asif Ali Zardari and received extensive and useful briefings from Interior Minister Rehman Malik and some senior security officials.

Mr Munoz said: ‘We are approaching our work in a transparent, open-minded and committed manner to ensure that our final report clearly establishes the truth regarding the facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We intend to do the utmost to accomplish this inquiry.’

Waste of resources, money and time indeed. Its quite clear by now that names of actual culprits would never be known. What the heck? Whats the purpose of above exercise? Ans...Some political mile scoring :hitwall: :hitwall:
