I am neither asserting nor denying anything. This post is more of a question than a statement.

I have believed that Soviet Union was defeated by USA and Afghanistan. Pakistan merely played a supporting role. But this guy @SecularNationalist said something else.

But then I have also learned that no country’s media can be trusted. I don’t know the ground realities. Who knows @SecularNationalist may actually be correct! Many Americans are racist. Maybe they denied credit to ISI. Someone who is really in the know - someone who has the authentic info about all this affair - should throw light.

So the question is: Who actually defeated Soviet Union?

Accept it dude you haven,t achieved something big like defeating USSR at your gates while having no nuclear deterrence.

ISI was involved for ten years before CIA pitched in..in that sense ISI has fought the longest running proxy war since the history of modern warfare.

Also it is somewhat Indian miscalculation that Indians have kept Pakistani at restraint in occupied Kashmir..the reality is that if ISI want to break hell lose...it surely can..but two key element are lacking in the case of Kashmir...which is necessary to fight long term proxy war.

  1. The presence of large number of indigenous guerrilla force willing to engage in long term conflict unlike the Pushtoon of Afghanistan...It means Pakistan will have to sneak in foreign fighters which de-legitimatizes the cause.
  2. International rally behind Pakistan cause..unlike the moral and material support we enjoyed in Afghan-Soviet fiasco.

Where is the choice of "None of the above" ?

The Soviet State.

Declaration on the occasion of the creation of the Commonwealth of the Independent States.

December 26, 1991, no. 142-N

The Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, following the will of the supreme state organisations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, of the Republic of Armenia, of the Republic of Belarus, of the Republic of Kazakhstan, of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, of the Republic of Moldova, of the Russian Federation, of the Republic of Tajikistan, of Turkmenistan, of the Republic of Uzbekistan and of Ukraine regarding the creation of the Commonwealth of the Independent States, stipulates that with the creation of Commonwealth of the Independent States the Union of SSR[1] ceases to exist as a state and as a subject of international law.

The Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR addresses the heads of the Independent States with a proposition to put the following questions under consideration:

- About the legal continuity of the Union of SSR and of the union-level power bodies and questions of power regarding the creation of the Commonwealth of the Independent States.

- About the creation of the inter-parliamentary body of the Commonwealth to preserve the united legal, economical, humanitarian and ecological space on territories of the member states of the Commonwealth.

- About the ratification, enforcement of and/or nullification of international treaties signed by the Union of SSR before the creation of the Commonwealth.

The Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR calls to the highest representative organs and to the heads of the member states of the Commonwealth to do everything in their power to enforce the rights and freedoms of the citizens of all ethnicities according to the Universal declaration of human rights, peaceful coexistence of the peoples of the Commonwealth, democratic development of their statehood good-neighbourly, cooperation-based relations with other states and peoples of the world community, to unflinchingly enforce the international obligations as stipulated in treaties and agreements of the Union of SSR.

Chairman of the Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR

God wills it :-)
its a natural phenomena all the world empires first accumulates then Expands then because of its over expansion in unfriendly territory they were willy-nilly forced to retract.
.
like in recent world...India that have no united history for last thousands of year are leaving no stone un-turned to stay united but its over expansion plan in Enemy territory ..47 Kashmir, 48 Hyderabad, 84 Siachin is taking it toll ....its a matter of time they'll be forced to disintegrate.

1. The Soviet Union. Itself.

Don't know why some people think Pakistan single-handily destroyed the Soviet Union. This is just delusion on their part. Soviet Union was a sick country when it decided to invade Afghanistan in 1979. And if weren't for US & Saudi bankrolling the whole enterprise, where would Pakistan be?
