Engineering has certainly taken us around the world, under the sea, and out into space, but it looks like engineering could also create a bridge to help soar two nations economies and foster peace and harmony between them. A ‘road to peace’ could be created linking India and Pakistan, which could lead to increased growth in the Punjab region. India remains one of the BRIC countries or growing economies, and this link could help establish its status, while boosting Pakistan’s own status.

The roadway will facilitate border crossing with less hassle for those making the journey, specifically those making the trip from India to one of the holiest Sikh temples in Katarpur, Pakistan. The Kartarpur corridor was approved by the Indian cabinet, and it will be a 5km long passageway connecting up two Sikh temples. With construction underway, the roadway will open up in 2019. Both sides hope that not only will the roadway bring about peace between the sparring nations, but that it would boost tourism. Indeed, the strengthened economy the region could see would be a huge benefit for many in the Punjab region. The pair already work together to share water in the Indus Waters Treaty, which brought peace since its ratification in 1960.

Economic growth between India and Pakistan could filter out into the world through stock trading, which enables traders across the world to trade contracts for difference on various commodities. This allows for the market capitalization of the commodities that are dependent on the region such as wheat, rice, and tea. Indeed, as Pakistan's economy struggles, the stock market continues to thrive, so settling the economy with this boost could lead to the stock market flourishing even further. By allowing better borders with the neighbouring countries, and faster transport and border crossing, labour could be shared across the countries and resources to promote the commodities and exports of both countries could be proliferated. As they grow, the rest of the world will be able to trade further with the nations and also be forced to increase the offerings of their own commodities to compete, which will boost the global economy and promote harmony while working together.

The Karakoram Highway between Pakistan and China has already shown how uniting two nations with a simple roadway can promote greater trade and symbolise a more symbiotic relationship. Ease of trade and access have been known the world over to improve not just tangible factors, but how nations feel and interact towards one another. So the bridge linking India and Pakistan doesn’t just have to be a physical one, but a sentimental one.

While the roadway may only be just over three miles long, the symbolism moving into 2019 shows a level of cooperation and collaboration that may just end up benefitting the wider world as it benefits the two nations. Tourism is especially expected to boost as religious trips are made between Sikh temples, which would act to boost local economies and improve global tourism to the Punjab region. Plus, strong relations between the two could help make the most out of the resources in the area. Overall, while Pakistan and India may benefit directly from the roadway between the two countries, the wider world will likely benefit from the ramifications that come from this.
