you raise good question.. i just tried to compare ..
you cant learn till you dont set standards or comparision to scale out yourself
You can't blame them. If I lived in these countries, I would want to get the hell out asap.

1. Separate Religion and state.

Hear, Hear!

Religion and the state and in particular, the CLERGY and the state should be kept far apart.
Politics is a dirty business and the smallest loyalties and ideologies can drive people mad in politics. Mixing religion with it has done for us nothing. Pakistan is a fine example of how not to run a state with regards to religion.

Yes sir. The worst thing about Pakistanis is (in UK) how the are also so hypocritical. They deceive people, lie about disabilities, tax avoidance etc and every other fraud, then go to the town centre and preach about Islam!

Very true. As a British Pakistani and a Muslim, people like that sicken me. And they exist, their shamelessness to go alongside it is perhaps even more sickening.

You probably can but that's not the truth. Pakistan was heading forward towards democratic system when Zia, the dictator died in a plane crash and free elections were held electing PPP to power. Then what happened? Their democratic government was toppled within years due to widespread corruption by Zardari aka. Mr. 10 %. So came Nawaz in a democratic way and he looted our banks along with the treasury. There was a sudden hike in prices / inflation during the 90's with PPP / PMLN rule even when global economy was booming. So came nuclear debacle and Kargil war that further destroyed Pakistan's stability and led to its consequent Martial Law. During Musharraf's reign, economy started to flourish again, but also terrorism and extremism. And when he was forced to retire democratically, we got stuck again with same old corrupt and tested PPP / PMLN. People in Pakistan has lost faith in electoral system anyway after decades of these incumbents in government.

There are no other angels. Rule of the thumb is: Momin aik hi soorakh se baar baar dasa nahin jaata. Our nation is getting bitten over and over again from the same snake pit. Why can't we change this Noora-Kushti?
You need to understand institutions evolve and mature. Western democracies did not sprung out of nowhere.. they went through the same painful phase of corruption, nepotism.. violence etc.
Besides there is no alternative.

By institutions I mean parliament/bereaucracy/election commission/Supreme court/free press. All these keep each other in check and function to make your country stronger.
Because your institution is shaken every so often, you wont get them to mature. Now its very much possible to be a better off country without strong institutions. But such period of prosperity has high risk of being short lived.
The society becomes a volcano which can erupt any point of time.

What you are doing is looking at specific individuals(nawaz .. bhutto etc).. not the system. The idea that all you need is a messiah who will set things right, might work once a while, but not in long run.

In case of India I can give an example. The election commission used to be a chamcha of govt, being a govt appointee. But we kept the system.. and slowly and gradually it gathered strength.
Now very rarely an oppositon candidate points fingers at election commission, no matter who the person is. In 80s and 90s, election rigging was commonplace. Not anymore. Even though election commission are govt servant(bureaucrats) and not judges.. everybody trusts them.

It took you guys more than 60 years of continuous elections to reach that far. We do not have that much time. We have gotta to hasten up these changes with the help of some Messiah as you say.

I have posted this before but here is the list (not exactly 10):

1) Education: Lack of education/knowledge be it religious or non religious leads to problems such as extremism, intolerance, unemployment,..... etc.
Introduce education for all and free schooling till metric?
All Mosques and Madrassas should be registered and should be under the state control (Get rid of all the derh eent ki masjid i.e. mosques to just collect funds). All the mullana should be appointed like civil service people but please employee educated people who have the religious knowledge. Integrate madrassas into school so to have one system of education.

2) Unity: There is no sense of unity. People are divided in casts (Ch, Jatt, Watto... etc), regions (Sindhi, Punjabi... etc), religious sects (sunni, shia,...etc).
Take out the cast names of every ones name for a start.

3) Justice: Absence of justice. A corrupt judiciary means people do whatever they feel like. Whoever has money and power will abuse the system. No accountability so other problems could be linked to this such as bribery, dishonesty, fraud etc.

4) Police: Absence of a working and honest security force. People are vulnerable and they take matters in their own hands. People with resources abuse the system. This leads to gangs, robberies, killings, rapes..... etc.

5) Patwari System: A corrupt ancient system which is easily manipulated. Adopt a computerized system similar to UK Land Registry (some progress has been made). Land reforms are needed to get rid of the feudals.

6) WAPDA: This department is the most incompetent. Couldn't build a single dam for four decades. Wasted time and money and most of all water (it will be very precious in the coming decade).
It is essential that water and power resources are developed. Pakistan is already a water scarce country and unless we build more reservoirs and hydro power the future generation may not survive.

7) PIA and Railway need reforms and strip politics out of these departments. Maybe even partly privatize it. Similar to PTCL model?

8) Tax: Major reforms needed.

9) Political system: Politics in Pakistan is more like choosing between two families for a ruler or the Army. This need to change.

10) Poverty: This is the main cause for many problems. Help people around oneself. Charity has been prescribed on all who are able. Spend the money wisely. Try to provide a long term fix i.e. employment.

11) Waste management: Toxic waste, Household waste and chemical waste from industries need to be managed properly with modern techniques otherwise the water resources and land resources will suffer greatly.

12) Ethnic minorities: Care for ethnic minorities. Respect other religions. Encourage diversity. Encourage tolerance.

These problems and issues cannot be resolved overnight. It may take a couple of decades or even a generation to fix. Every Pakistani will need to play their part at home and Overseas. Remember reform starts at home. Educate (religious, sciences, ethics, honesty, unity, tolerance) oneself and ones family, friends, neighbours, community, city.
Create opportunities for oneself, ones family, friends, neighbours, community, city.... Cooperate with each other and hard work is the only way forward.
