What's new

Vietnam ‘needs to change’ its reliance on Russian arms. Will the US step in to help upgrade its military?

It would be a fool to make giants as your enemies esp that one is your immediate neighbour, in that case you are signing up for your own destruction.
Case of point now is Ukraine.
Unless the PLA is ready to move, Chinese tanks stand 5km away from our border, then be relax and calm.

We are brave but not stupid.

During Blinken's visit, one dissident was sentenced and one dissident was arrested. And General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong de facto declined the invitation to visit the US (he said when the time is convenient, kind of).

Right after Blinken's visit, Chairman of National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue pays a visit to Cuba.

The missing of US flag was just a normal protocol, but a clear sign that Vietnam did not consider this relationship special.

In conclusion, the chance to buy US weapons in large scale to replace Soviet era weapons and Russian weapons is small. Vietnam may purchase some systems in small scale. Aside from indigenous weapons, Vietnam has other sources, for example North Korea and South Korea to replace Russia (the Minister of Defense has just been to South Korea with a visit to Hanhwa for K9 Thunder)
