HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam is holding talks with chips companies with the aim of boosting investment in the country and possibly building its first chipmaking plant, or fab, two business executives said, despite warnings from U.S. industry officials about high costs.

The Southeast Asian electronics manufacturing hub already hosts U.S. giant Intel's largest semiconductor packaging and testing plant worldwide and is home to several chip designing software firms. It is working on a strategy to attract more semiconductor investment, including from foundries, which focus on manufacturing chips.

Meetings with half a dozen U.S. chip firms took place in recent weeks, including with fab operators, Vu Tu Thanh, head of the Vietnam office of the US-ASEAN Business Council, told Reuters. He declined to identify the firms because talks were still at a preliminary stage.

A chip executive, who declined to be identified because he was not allowed to talk to media, said talks with potential investors have involved U.S. contract manufacturer GlobalFoundries and Taiwan's PSMC.

The aim was to build Vietnam's first fab, most likely for less advanced chips used in cars or for telecoms applications, the executive added.

The meetings followed an historic upgrade of formal ties between Vietnam and the U.S. in September, when President Joe Biden visited Hanoi and the White House described the former foe as potentially a "critical player" in semiconductor global supply chains.

GlobalFoundries attended a restricted business summit during Biden's visit after an invitation from the president himself, the company said, but has since shown no immediate interest in investing in Vietnam, a person familiar with the matter said.

"We do not comment on market rumors," a GlobalFoundries spokesperson said when asked about subsequent contacts. PSMC did not reply to a request for comment.

Industry officials said meetings at this stage were mostly to test interest and discuss potential incentives and subsidies, including on power supplies, infrastructure and the availability of trained workforce.

You aim to become a low-end sweatshop, not a real semiconductor powerhouse.
Ah come on tiger, making shoes forever is boring, a bit competition is always good.
If establishing fabs Global foundries, Samsung, Tsmc will get generous handouts from VN.

Both Samsung and TSMC are finished.

It is the final showdown between the US and China, and the US is still betting that we cannot mass produce 7nm in a foreseeable future, but they are going to make another blunder by betting against China.

China will make sure that we can control 90% of the semiconductor market by the end of this decade just like what we did to the EV industry.

They are scared of more asian countries getting into the semiconductor games.

Like Asian are freaklng built to make semiconductors, dexterity and attention to detail are in our blood.

Nah I wish you all the best. The thing is nobody or country alone can’t keep up with developments. You need partners. Making let’s say lithography machines is a complex adventure. Thousands of components are needed. At the moment only one company in the world can make the laser and amplifier. One company in the world can make laser focusing optics. Both are in Germany: Trumpf and Zeis.
Without those companies Asml can’t make anything.

If China can do everything alone or maybe with the help from the russians then then ok. Samsung, Tsmc will stay. They won’t disappear every soon.

We are starting to mass produce the 28nm lithography machines, and with the new multilayer fabrication process, the 28nm lithography machine can mass produce the 7nm chips.

We also have developed our own EUV light source.

Russia predicts that China will triumph over the US in this ongoing chip war.

Viets are not lacking in delusions of grandeur. It's the one trait they share in common with Indians.

there are lots of buzz about China can make lithography machines, but until yet people still have to see any real machines or prove that you can make high precision laser in nanometers.
the Urls you posted either not workling or not showing worth of news. I think China bought old version of Aslm machines and re-use the laser and other components like amplifyer and optics in the made in China lithography machines.
but congrats. that is a big achievement for China.

ah come on. what trait, you re racist? why resort to racism? having fabs is delusion? you mean we have to ask Ccp for permission before we have fabs?
there is influx now into VN semiconductor industry. the US company Coherent semiconductor wants to invest into a $750 miliion factory to make laser and optics.

Responses here have been mostly predictable. Nothing nice to say and almost always putting down Vietnam.
