Indian welfare fund not for debt-ridden citizens in UAE: Ravi

The Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, Vayalar Ravi, has promised to use the Indian Community Welfare Fund in the UAE to set up a new crematorium and community centres in the UAE.

The minister said he would not commit even a small portion of the Dh8.5 million funds lying with the Indian Embassy and Indian Consulate in the UAE, to even partially ameliorate the situation of financially distressed members of the Indian community who sometimes resort to the extreme step like suicide.

Speaking at a press conference at the India Club, the minister refused to even consider the suggestion of a group of Indian community associations that a part of the fund could be used to give small financial aid or loans to prevent financially distressed Indian families and individuals from committing suicide.

After the economic crisis worsened in different parts of the world including the Middle East, many Indians have taken their lives due to credit card and bank loan defaults and other liabilities.

“We are not running a business here and we cannot use the fund for helping financially distressed people.

You have to realize that they can't do much unless the people from the top(Government) allows them to. And once you start a welfare program people start to become too dependent on it. Look at the situation of US too many government programs that are running and consuming a lot of money and adding to the debt.

Bro, he knows very well why the minister catagorically denied "welfare fund" to be used to bail out people.
The fund is for welfare of the whole community not for specific individual who take risks.

Why reply to a flame bait thread.

The money is being used to build a public use facility there for Indians.

Of ALL nationalities Indians have the lowest debt default rate in UAE, and guess which country has the HIGHEST debt default rate...

Ya you guessed it right, national problem.
