What's new

US suspends military aid to Pakistan. Military says it doesn't need it.

The US doesn't "owe" Pakistan anything.. They gave almost 20 billion in aid since 2001, for what? So Bin Laden could hide close to Islamabad next to a military facility? I am being a bit cynical but seriously though.. what was it good for?

To the Americans on here, was it worth it?

In 2010 economic and military aid from the US to Pakistan was more than 2.6 billion. 800 million in cuts are a correction, but a turning point? I don't know about that..

You can't be that naive.. What are the Chinese doing that there propaganda is working so well in Pakistan?

It is almost like "ITS SUPER EFFECTIVE!" <-- nostalgic reference ;)

No. Not worth it.

Actually, it does. $300 million out of the $800 were reimbursement costs, for Pakistan keeping 100,000+ troops on the Western border. This does not include the fact that the NATO supplies flowing through Pakistan were not taxed. And thirdly, the US never paid Pakistan for the infrastructure damage their NATO supplies caused flowing supplying through the country, the losses which are in the billions as well.

Where else were you gonna keep them? A soldier in the US cost the same east or west. If we didn't pay, you would have no soldiers there? Makes no sense.

Because you have sneakily eaten $300Mn that you owe us in costs by lying that is out of the aid package.

What do we owe you for? Mangoes?

It could be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan. IMO... this act along with the denial of visa for US intel officers and other action taken by GoP and PA to show that they will not compromise on the sovereignty of Pakistan, will help to decrease the support for the extremists in Pakistan and it may help to create a bit of credibility for GoP.

Shamsi air base, asking us to station troops on the Afghan border, Nato Supply route, air transit over Pakistani airspace. I'm ready to give you this $300Mn as charity, since IMO its more important to shut Pakistan to American military.

I'll pay US a thousand bucks out of my own money so that it does not resume this aid...

US has sneakily decided to withhold money Pakistan has already spent in understanding it would be paid for by the US.

Is aid squabble just the latest blowup in bad U.S.-Pakistan marriage?
points:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters Monday that the decision to withhold aid does not signify a change in policy, "but it underscores that our partnership depends on cooperation."
She stressed civilian assistance has not been cut and said the United States remains committed to "helping Pakistan build and improve its capabilities."

"This is a 'hold,'" Lapan said Monday during his daily off-camera session with journalists in his Pentagon office.
"It's again directly tied to those decisions by the Pakistani military to curtail training and to not grant visas for some of the U.S. personnel we need to get in. So if those things change, the aid will change as well," he said.

In addition to weapons, the $800 million also includes hundreds of millions of dollars to reimburse Pakistan for its military campaigns against extremists, including those threatening U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

And this:

US lays bare concerns on Pakistan army
points:

In suspending aid, the United States is showing it will no longer give the benefit of the doubt to Pakistan's military after a long debate on how to handle the powerful institution.

Pakistan's military, used to commanding respect at home, was chastened by its failure to detect a top-secret US raid in May that killed the world's most wanted man Osama bin Laden a short distance from the country's top academy.

some US policymakers and analysts were distraught at what they saw as a bellicose reaction from Pakistan since the bin Laden operation, including ordering out up to 200 trainers in the country.
"The US realized that maybe this isn't just about the Pakistanis' capability, maybe there is also a will issue," said Lisa Curtis, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation.
"This is a strong signal that the US is no longer satisfied with Pakistani cooperation and more willing in the aftermath of bin Laden's death to follow through," she said.

Much of the deferred aid involved funding for the trainers. The United States planned an annual $2.7 billion to Pakistan in security assistance, meaning that most military aid -- and all civilian aid -- will proceed.

Nawaz said Pakistan's military knew that a worsening relationship was not in the country's interest as it could spiral downward and hurt other priorities -- such as US support for Pakistan in international financial institutions.
"I think there is a desire to maintain the relationship. There is a question of finding the way to achieving that objective," he said.

So what is you guys problem again? For all the literate educated fellows jumping to conclusions and the grandiose chest thumping going around, a little reading wont do any harm. You guys are still getting both civilian and military aid, so why all this empty bravado?

Pakistani authorities - especially "The Establishment" - need to mend their ways. You cannot threaten anyone by pointing a gun at your own head! You might not have a country to call your own if the borders go unprotected. Seriously, some 'friends' may shed tears!

This now is a very old propaganda theme - bring on something new.

And now that the Americans are sheepishly explaining that hey the relationship is on-track - what are you crowing about.

US has to stop interveening in other countries internal affires by using force, they did this in Vietnam, Iraq, Pakistan, Afganisthan and almost where ever they have gone with the use of force, they have made a mess for the civilization that lives there. If a government of a nation is acting against the people of its country, let the people do what is needed, there is no requirment for the US to spend its money and show its musscle.
If US is really interested in peace and prosperity, start schools and medicare facilities in the third world countries, give those who live a barbaric life a civilization to save. Rather you go in with your sophesticated weapons, bomb your opponents cities with smart weaponary and kill more people than the Government of the country did.

US has to stop aiding other countries with money, rather it has to build a countries civilization with stronger education.

Earlier there was problem of nation building - and now Civilizational Building. When are we going to Mars. :)

You have misunderstood my point, when a person is wel educated of his rights and the law that he should abid by and also on how to protest to revoke a law that the masses think is harmful for its society is the one I am talking as civilization. we might have lived in a developing and some in developed nations, but look at the percentage of people who knew their rigts. Civilization is not born out of individual interest, its the masses interest and masses should have a common mind of good colective thinking and not some nut-job at the top and too many idiotic followers.

I hope now you got why I am talking about building Civilization. Its all not only about individual morale by colective morale.

US has to stop interveening in other countries internal affires ...

Right now, as I write these lines, Americans have overt and covert involvements in acts of violence in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen, in one way or another. I don't want to copy and paste a rather long list of US involvements since 1890's alone with various violent international events.

Of course ALL of those are others' faults? Rrrrrightt! How about some accountability of the runaway Military Industrial Complex which are thieving Americans themselves of hard earned tax dollars? Let's face it: There is a very powerful cabal of people in America who basically thrive on wars. It is their bread and butter. And yet these people have brought American economy to this dismal level despite the huge resource, geopolitical, and human resource advantages the US has.

And then they accuse Pakistanis of denials!
