U.S. defence chief calls China, India 'threats'

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta appeared to call China and India "threats" on Thursday, in comments that the Pentagon quickly sought to correct.

Panetta, addressing workers at a submarine plant in Connecticut, was talking about emerging challenges facing the United States as it looks beyond the Iraq and Afghan wars.

After detailing the threat of cyber warfare, Panetta turned to concerns over "rising powers."

"We face the threats from rising powers, China, India, others that we have to always be aware of," Panetta said.

"And (we have to) try to make sure that we always have sufficient force protection out there in the Pacific to make sure they know we're never going anywhere."

His remarks came the same day that President Barack Obama said on a visit to Australia that the U.S. military would expand its role in the Asia-Pacific region despite budget cuts. Obama declared America was "here to stay" as a Pacific power.

Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby moved to correct the record, saying Panetta believed that relationships with both China and India were absolutely vital.

"Any suggestion that he was implying either country was a military threat is just false," Kirby said.

Kirby said Panetta was referring instead to the challenges that China and India face "within themselves."

"And (he was referring to) the challenges that we share with them as we try to forge better relationships going forward in a very turbulent, dynamic security environment," Kirby said.

Panetta made the comments after touring a nuclear-powered, Virginia-class attack submarine in the very final phase of construction. The U.S. submarine fleet is considered one of the most important counters to China's growing military might, which includes advances in missile technology that make surface targets easier to reach.

Obama also announced this week that the United States will extend the military's reach into Southeast Asia with Marines, naval ships and aircraft deployed to northern Australia from 2012.

China has questioned the deployment to Australia, raising doubts whether strengthening such alliances will help the region pull together at a time of economic gloom.

Seemed like the US wants to keep Indian down too. I wonder what all the Chinese hating Indian thinks about this. Indian are so quick to jump into bed with the US and contain China. After that Indian will be contained by the West too. Do Indian think the West will allow one of their former colonies and slaves to dominate them?

The US regime spoke person are quick to correct this Freudian slip, but this is a peak into the thinking in Washington and much of the Western world - 'darkies' will always play second fiddle to the white man.

Already posted genius.... don`t jump on this

We are very much aware of the threat and are not comfortable having them anywhere in the region.

Thats why we rejected their proposal on getting tough on Myanmar against their junta when Obama visited.

Thats why rejected US fighters , so that they dont station here in the name of servicing them.

Thats why we have opposed their moves against SL.

Thats why we dont usually listen to their appeal on joining a coalition and opposes their views in various forums on internnational bodies like UN, WTO, climate change etc etc.

It is not us who brought them to the region, the guys who brought them to the region are suffering much.. We have learned a lot from these incidents and we play by the rules.

Yes any growing power is a threat to US. China now and India maybe in future. They can do nothing.. deal with it.;)

Huh? Look who is talking, India in bed with US? Right  one of the most important reasons as to why your economy is where it is today is because of the US. china has been sleeping every day every night for years. Your CCP Leaders run your country like factory that churns out cheap products which get sold all over the world including the US. They design them and you make for export. If they decide to stop providing you work, and manufactures start pulling out, your economy is in serious trouble. This is the Problem being an export economy. None the less what else can you expect hypocrisy at its best I urge the Chinese members to stop acting like a couple going through a divorce with the USA. Just sour grapes get over it.

I see India as a great civilization with very great philosophers, China too. Historically, if India and China are united - Asia will be more dominant and it will bring prosperity to the region. That's more than 2 billion people. 2 billion people should not be bullied by the Western world or play by the rules written by former colonialists.

My dear chinese tiger,

There are several geniune and immediate concerns for india due to actions of chinese government which US is taking advantage of.
Otherwise most indians admire chinese development and not jealous as you wish.

you are wrong,US never likes China and China is not the only choice for US to buy things from.the reason why US buys everything from China is because China is their best choice.balancing the quality and cost,Chinese goods are more cometitive than other countries good so that merchants can make more profit,US never ordered their companies only buy Chinese goods, that's US companies own choice.dont sound like that US asked their business people only buy things from China,US is never a China lover,we Chinese achieve what we have by hardworking not by preferential treatment.

You dont realize that Indians this will will be the fools who will play the american chess board in perception of "growing economy". Much like we did the bidding in Afghanistan - Soviet war..and we suffered heavily out of that!

U are comparing India's diplomacy with Kid Pakistan's diplomacy !!! lol!!!

We know how to play the diplomatic game very well...see how we got the 123 Nuclear deal from USA and we have yet not signed for any nuclear reactors from them.. We have not bought F-16 and F-18 planes even after top level pressure from USA...but We know what is good for us..We have bought C-17 and C-130j from USA as they will be helpful to us..

Can u say the same thing about Pakistan?? U run from daddy USA to daddy China or abba Saudi Arabia? and still dont get what u need...

Wow, The USA is starting to look more and more like the former USSR.

America will treat any country as a threat that is trying to develop its Military to the point where it may pose a challenge to our Hegemony. Indian navy is a threat to our American power as they have ambitions in the Indian Ocean. US will not allow another Blue Water Navy in the Indian Ocean.
