WASHINGTON: The United States is investing in long-term strategic partnership with India, the Pentagon said on Thursday in a new defence strategic document which puts Asia on a bigger priority and identifies China as a security threat.

"The United States is investing in a long-term strategic partnership with India to support its ability to serve as a regional economic anchor and provider of security in the broader Indian Ocean region," said the document unveiled by President Barack Obama in his rare appearance at the Pentagon.

The document titled 'Sustaining US Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense' identified China as one country which poses a security threat to the US in long term.

"Over the long-term, China's emergence as a regional power will have the potential to affect the US economy and our security in a variety of ways," said the eight-page document.

"Our two countries have a strong stake in peace and stability in East Asia and an interest in building a cooperative bilateral relationship. However, the growth of China's military power must be accompanied by greater clarity of its strategic intentions in order to avoid causing friction in the region," the document said.

The new strategy also replaces the decade-old policy of maintaining a force capable of fighting two wars at once.

"Even when US forces are committed to a large-scale operation in one region, they will be capable of denying the objectives of - or imposing unacceptable costs on - an opportunistic aggressor in a second region," it said.

The document made clear that while some current military missions will be curtailed, none will be scrapped entirely.

"Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on historical and projected uses of US military forces and our inability to predict the future," the document said.

AP adds: President Barack Obama insists the United States will maintain what he calls the best-equipped military in US history despite deep and looming defense budget cuts.

In a rare appearance in the Pentagon briefing room, Obama offered the outlines of an overhauled defense strategy. It is designed to contend with hundreds of billions of dollars in budget cuts and refocus the United States' national security priorities after a decade dominated by the post-Sept 11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obama says the military will be leaner but promises the world that the US will maintain its "military superiority" with fighting forces ready for any threat.

The president says the strategy review centered on the military the country needs after the "long wars of the last decade are over."

Indians are very easy people, US try to use them as much as they want to save their economy. No doubt, Indians will obey to respect US laws and orders in order to counter China.

After China, US will dump India to the sea. :agree:

I think you are comparing US-Pak relationship to US-India relationship..
Think carefully..How much India is/has gained and how much Pakistan is/has lost.

Perhaps there is nothing wrong in seeking a little help from the U.S.A. vis-a-vis china is concerned, but india should be cautious in its approach towards the U.S.A. because whatever U.S. touches turns into sh!t (our neighbors are an example)!!

India should look for its interest first before jumping into the U.S. camp.

U.S.A. is a very shrewd country, it only cares for itself and nothing else. There could be a great loss in jumping into the U.S. camp as there is a famous saying in Pentagon, "There is nothing like a free lunch". We might lose more than we might gain out of this approach.

Times of India?

Well, best of luck with the relationship with Russia.

P.S: I am doubtful if India would want to be used as a proxy against China. India would be more or less pro-Russia in the long term.

Now this scares me a bit.. Hope Indian external affairs and strategists tread here very carefully

India and Russia have a long standing partnership. I don't see much problems with Indo-Russian relationship because of US. Russia has stood with us through thick and thin.

US identifies China as security threat? How?

what about the business going on between these two nation?

US cannot help India to improve its relationship with neighbour countries China, Pakistan, sri lanka, Bangladesh etc. All actions of US are motivated by self interests

This is my bigger concern though is this:

In these areas, sophisticated adversaries will use asymmetric
capabilities, to include electronic and cyber warfare, ballistic and cruise missiles,
advanced air defenses, mining, and other methods, to complicate our operational
calculus. States such as China and Iran will continue to pursue asymmetric means to
counter our power projection capabilities, while the proliferation of sophisticated
weapons and technology will extend to non-state actors as well.

Sustaining US Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense

In the last decade it was asymmetric threats that did more damage to India, or ever since 1971.

China is a security threat, especially cyber and espionage. Chinese spies have been identified and caught in some cases. If this security threat continues there will be a new cold war on the horizon between the Empire of the United States and the Peoples Republic of China.

Though the security threat works both ways. China should be very grateful to the US exported much of its manufacturing base (clothing, shoes, low-tech consumer goods, others) to China giving rise to the worlds factory. The US consumer benefits my receiving goods at a lower price though quality may be compromised at times.

It is historically true that as nations become stronger their path changes, and their attitudes and actions are a reflection of their new powers.

Why every pakistani thinks India will perform like pakistan?

India is not pakistan! Don't expect every country will behave like yours when it comes to relationship with US.

We have relationship with US on equal terms not as a client state:rolleyes:

I think you are comparing US-Pak relationship to US-India relationship..
Think carefully..How much India is/has gained and how much Pakistan is/has lost.

No differences... US/Pakistan relations for 30+years compared to the new relation US/India (for China).

India and Russia have a long standing partnership. I don't see much problems with Indo-Russian relationship because of US. Russia has stood with us through thick and thin.

You will see, how Russia will get angry at India against China. Remember Russia and China are regular joint exercises against US dominances.

India make mistake to join US camps or non-aligned policy, Russia wouldn't pleased with it. Next ten years, it will not be the same for Russia/India.

We Indians would be happy to help anyone against China because China is arming Pakistan against us and there nothing bad in following same strategy against them. And as Far as Russia is concerned even Russians know that we will help Americans against China but won't do it against Russia. And do you really think Russia concerns about China, all they are doing is arming India and Vietnam against Chinese.

@eastwest no wonder india was content with sugar daddy USSR and now its happy with her new husband uncle Sam... non aligned by foot... as for cuckoo land and day dreaming... nobody except indians talk about being SOOOOOPA POwA.

Let say ur right..oh by the way did u happen to see the Indo-US nuclear agreement, we have not yet given US any business..
Infact we have signed the first agreement with Russia and followed by 8 other countries..so much for ur claim of US being husband..
I think u might have confused India with Pakistan which behaves like a drunkard's wife..no matter how much the drunkard hits his wife after he comes home , the wife never leaves him, infact massages and presses the husband's feet while he sleeps...

And to the part USSR being our sugar daddy.. Atleast they were with us when we were going to be attacked by USA, UK and China.. atleast It was there..unlike ur Sugar daddy 'USA'and ur all weather friend 'China' ..who tend to disappear when they are really needed
