UAE takes delivery of NIMR protected ambulances
James Bingham and Samuel Cranny-Evans - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
07 August 2017
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces has taken delivery of a number of protected ambulances from military vehicle developer NIMR Automotive, Jane’s has learnt during a visit to the company’s manufacturing facility near Abu Dhabi.

Deliveries of the new ambulance, based on the 6x6 Hafeet platform, have already commenced and approximately 27 of an ordered 45 vehicles have been delivered to date.

The 15-tonne ambulance is designed to provide forces with a rapid cross country casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) capability. The vehicle is protected against blast and ballistic threats to NATO STANAG 4569 Level 2 standard and built using a semi-monocoque hull that is mounted on the Hafeet’s ladder frame chassis.

The company said the vehicle’s physical dimensions – measuring 7 m length and 2.7 m in height – were carefully considered to provide medical personnel with adequate standing room while ensuring that the platform remained air transportable.

The rear of the Hafeet ambulance houses two stretchers mounted on bespoke racks that can be extended to load severely wounded passengers without risking further harm. The vehicle also provides space for two walking wounded personnel on elevated seats.

The variant shown to Jane’s is also equipped with a common apparatus for oxygen masks mounted in the ceiling of the medical bay as well as a defibrillator.

Other UAE specific adaptations include a window on the front left of the casualty holding area for improved situational awareness, as well as a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection system. These have been fitted as a result of recent developments in Syria.
