U.S. reports nearly 1 mln COVID-19 cases in a day, setting global record

The problem is that the Beijing Winter Olympics is just one month away and US got this rampant virus spreading, All American citizens should be banned entering China, US should be banned participating this Olympics. My worst fear is Beijing being locked down after the Olympics, Americans are walking biological bombs now.

I think China should ban Olympics temporarily for few years..

no other country closed borders or locked down like China did. it's OK. you'll get used to seeing China do the impossible - on live TV, witnessed by millions, and the only way to deal for haters is by smoking more copium. From sports to science to disease control, that's just how China works.

You tried to hold China to an impossible standard before. Now we've met it.
Yes of course, China has zero COVID cases. Exactly the type of propaganda I would expect from a country which strives to show itself as the greatest and all capable, with no weaknesses. Of course, China has no problems what so ever, and doesn't matter how much more infectious COVID gotten, it has no impact on almighty China.

If the fatality rate is low, who gives a shit. It’s time to get our lives back!

China has hundreds of COVID cases. they were quickly detected and quashed. if you don't destroy COVID when they're at hundreds, soon you will have millions.

lmao the Israeli talks of infallability propaganda. That is exactly the projection that you are famous for. You are the ones that do not allow any questioning of your country.

What goes around comes around. It sucks for everyone. They should be strict on any participating nations.

In Toronto we had way too many cases from the Chinese and South Asian communities.
U.S. reports nearly 1 mln COVID-19 cases in a day, setting global record

Jan 4 (Reuters) - The United States reported nearly 1 million new coronavirus infections on Monday, the highest daily tally of any country in the world and nearly double the previous U.S. peak set a week ago as the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant showed no signs of slowing.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has risen nearly 50% in the last week and now exceeds 100,000, according to data collected by Reuters, marking the first time that threshold has been reached in a year.

The latest surge, which forced waves of cancellations from commercial airlines flights to Broadway shows in recent weeks, was disrupting plans for public schools to welcome students back from winter vacation. In Chicago, union leaders were urging teachers in the nation's third-largest school district to stay home as classrooms were reopening.

In Los Angeles County, the presiding judge of one of the country's largest court systems ordered a general two-week postponement of criminal trials due to the latest wave of COVID-19 infections.

Nationally, the United States has seen a daily average of 486,000 new cases over the last week, a rate that has doubled in seven days and far outstrips that of any other country.

The 978,856 new infections documented on Monday including some cases tallied on Saturday and Sunday, when many states do not report.

The average number of U.S. COVID-19 deaths has remained fairly steady throughout December and into early January at about 1,300 a day, according to a Reuters tally, though deaths typically lag behind case numbers and hospitalizations.

Omicron appears to be far more easily transmitted than previous iterations of the virus. The new variant was estimated to account for 95.4% of the coronavirus cases identified in the United States as of Jan. 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday.

The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that evidence thus far suggests Omicron is causing less severe illness. Nevertheless, public health officials have warned that the sheer volume of Omicron cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals, some of which are already struggling to handle a wave of COVID-19 patients, primarily among the unvaccinated.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan declared a 30-day state of emergency on Tuesday and mobilized 1,000 National Guard members to pandemic response operations as COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state hit a record high of more than 3,000, up more than five-fold in the last seven weeks, Hogan said.

"The truth is that the next four to six weeks will be the most challenging time of the entire pandemic," Hogan told reporters. He said projections show COVID hospitalizations could surpass 5,000, far higher than Maryland's previous peak of 1,952 last year.

Delaware, Illinois, Ohio and Washington, D.C., also have reported record numbers of hospitalized COVID patients in recent days.

'UNLIKE ANYTHING WE'VE SEEN'

In Kentucky, where Tuesday's total of 6,915 new cases was the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic, Governor Andy Beshear urged residents to get vaccinated and wear masks.

"Omicron is causing a surge unlike anything we've seen and at this rate our hospitals will fill up," he wrote on Twitter.

The unrelenting surge has prompted more than 3,200 schools to close their buildings this week, according to the website Burbio, which tracks school disruptions. Schools that have remained open are facing staff shortages and renewed concerns about virus spread.

In Boston, where more than 54,000 students returned to class on Tuesday following the holiday break, Superintendent of Schools Brenda Cassellius told reporters there were 1,000 staff members out, including 461 teachers and 52 bus drivers.

"It does make for a difficult start to the day," she said.

The governing body of the Chicago Teachers Union on Tuesday urged its members to stay out of the classroom and work remotely through Jan. 18, or until the city reaches minimum health-safety thresholds set last year as a condition for in-person learning, whichever comes first.

The union's House of Delegates voted 88% in favor of the resolution, sending it to the 27,000 rank-and-file teachers and support staff to ratify by electronic ballot on Tuesday night.

The union has called for more rigorous COVID-19 safety protocols, including school-based coronavirus testing and mandatory student vaccinations.

District chief executive officer Pedro Martinez said the school system would agree to further COVID-19 safety measures. But he said classes for Chicago's 340,000 students would be canceled on Wednesday if teachers voted against reporting to work, with no remote instruction being made immediately available.

The union has cited data showing that vaccination rates remained especially low among minority students - with just 7% of Black youngsters and 13% of Latino children aged 5-11 fully inoculated. But school officials said hospitalization rates for children in Chicago are very low.

More than 325,000 COVID-19 cases among children were reported in the United States for the week ending Dec. 30, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association, a new high and almost double the count from the previous two weeks.

The Biden administration was finalizing contracts for 500 million rapid coronavirus tests it plans to distribute for free to Americans, the White House said on Tuesday. The initiative is intended to help alleviate a testing crunch that has led to inadequate supplies and long lines in many places.

It is ridiculous. We got it bad in Canada as well. Currently we got lockdowns and curfews. Cases have quadrupled but thankfully the number of deaths are significantly low.

China's policy of zero cases isn't because there's actually zero cases in China, it's because that's what they're allowed to report.

In my opinion the Chinese strategy of zero covid is flawed. Very soon and as early as this year, most of us outside of China will have gotten and recovered from Covid, thereby building our natural immunity. Omicron is virulent but weak, and most people recover within 2 to 4 days. Once this wave is over most of the world will designate covid as endemic and will get on with our normal lives including international travel, outdoor and indoor events etc. The Chinese unfortunately will not be able to particularly in this as their citizens will not have the required immunity so they will be confined to living as normal in China only. The Chinese will keep their wall up, and not allow foreigners in or permit Chinese residents out. This can only be bad for China in the long run.

You guys don't live in Beijing, if you do, you'll pray for the cancellation.

Corporations have sunk in millions in deals, apart from the government itself, mate. Don't think they will like canceling right now. Unfortunately, after all debates and discussions, money is what makes the decision.

Still 330 million to go.

Nearly a third of new daily infections have been reported from Delhi and Mumbai
India is bracing for a third wave of coronavirus as its largest cities - the capital Delhi and financial hub Mumbai - see a surge in cases.
India reported 58,097 cases on Wednesday, a six-fold rise in a week that experts say is fuelled by the Omicron variant.
Nearly a third of those infections came from Delhi and Mumbai.
Both cities have brought back curfews and other restrictions to halt the spread of the virus.
Dr NK Arora, head of India's vaccine task force, told NDTV on Monday that the third wave of the pandemic had already begun in the country, adding that the "whole wave seems to be driven by a new variant... Omicron".
The country has reported more than 2,000 Omicron cases - Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, is leading the tally (653), followed by Delhi (464).
Delhi's health minister Satyendar Jain has said that 81% of Covid samples in the city tested positive for Omicron.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - one of India's major hospitals - in Delhi has cancelled winter leave for doctors, according to reports.
The rising infections are a sombre reminder of the devastating second wave India faced in April and May - daily averages of about 400,000 cases at the peak of the crisis.

Delhi was among the hardest hit cities as hospitals across the country ran out of beds and life-saving oxygen, leaving patients gasping for breath. Crematoriums were overwhelmed, forcing people to hold mass burials in open spaces.
Caseloads did drop eventually - for many months the national tally remained well under 10,000 cases a day.
Now as cases rise again, state governments are re-imposing restrictions.
Preliminary data suggests that fewer people infected with Omicron need hospital treatment when compared with other variants. But experts advise caution as a surge in cases could put hospitals under strain.
On Tuesday, authorities in Delhi imposed a weekend curfew, with all non-essential activity banned between Friday night and Monday morning. The capital last week closed gyms and cinemas, as well as imposing an overnight curfew in an effort to stem the spread.

The weekend curfew decision was announced hours after the city's chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tested positive, saying he was isolating with mild symptoms.
Mr Kejriwal has been attending massive election rallies in other states, even as cases continue to rise in his city.
On Monday, he attended an event in Uttarakhand where many, including those sharing the stage with him, were seen without a mask.
Several other politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have held similar rallies in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in the past few weeks in which thousands - many without masks - have participated with little regard to social distancing.
The three states, along with Goa and Manipur, go to the polls in February and March.

Ahead of India's second wave too, political parties flouted Covid guidelines in states such as West Bengal where elections were due. The mega rallies were blamed for helping the virus spread.
But the Election Commission indicated last week that this year's polls may not be postponed even amid the rise in cases.
Meanwhile, authorities in Mumbai said they will consider imposing a lockdown if daily cases cross the 20,000 mark. The city recorded 10,860 new cases on Tuesday, a 34.37% jump from the previous day.
Cases are also rising in Goa, a tourist haven, where authorities have imposed a night curfew - it reported 592 new infections on Monday.
Goa saw massive gatherings and parties over Christmas and New Year's Eve, which experts say has contributed to the spike in infections.
India's government is yet to announce booster doses, although Mr Modi has said precaution doses will be given from 10 January to frontline workers and those above the age of 60 with comorbidities.
About 63% of India's eligible adults have been fully vaccinated and more than 90% have received at least one jab since the beginning of the vaccination drive in January 2021.
India has so far reported more than 34 million cases and 482,000 deaths from coronavirus, although experts say the true toll could be much higher.

Coronavirus infections in US at worst level since the start of the pandemic , 1.17 million infections a day
2022-01-09

The daily number of coronavirus cases in the United States has risen to its worst level since the start of the pandemic. The rapid spread of infections is having a wide-ranging impact on people's daily lives.

Johns Hopkins University says new daily cases in the US reached about 1.17 million on January 3.

The seven-day average through Friday was around 770,000, surpassing the previous peak in January last year.

The situation is especially serious in the eastern states of New York and New Jersey, as well as the southern state of Florida. The rate of positive test results has surpassed 25 percent in these states.

Schools across the US are reopening after the holidays. But there is concern about whether in-person classes can continue safely.

The percentage of fully vaccinated school children is lower than those of other generations, as their inoculation program started later. The rate is 16.7 percent for those aged 5 to 11, and 53.9 percent for those aged 12 to 17.

In some regions, authorities have decided to switch to online classes or to postpone the restart of in-person classes.

In New York City, a shortage of workers due to COVID-19 infections has disrupted public transport. Bus services are being delayed and some subway lines have been suspended.

Very soon and as early as this year, most of us outside of China will have gotten and recovered from Covid, thereby building our natural immunity. Looks like your country didn't tell you that:

1. COVID-patients can still be reinfected after being cured, just like influenza. For example, the Genoa football team has just announced that coach Shevchenko has reinfected the COVID.

2. COVID-patients have a certain chance to leave sequelae after cure. And these sequelae are lifelong and incurable. These sequelae include permanent trauma to the heart and lungs, and greatly increase the risk of cancer.

3. Do you know the "Antibody-dependent enhancement"? Once a COVID has a variant that can strengthen the ADE effect, those COVID-patients after cure are more likely to rout the immune system, leading to severe or even death.
