What's new

Turkey could acquire around 80 Eurofighter Typhoon Fighter Jets

They should buy the JF-17 block III from Pakistan and partner into a new jet based on a stealthy version of the J-10C airframe with minimal R&D due to existing production capacity. That's 5 years and you'd start to field 50 jets a year. Not a bad option considering I'd expect Turkey's relations to go sour with NATO due to their natural alliance with Greece.
They don't want it. They could have bought a squadron to support Pakistan's sales but they say it's inferior to what they already have. I don't know.

The JFT block III is not inferior to Turkey's F-4 Phantoms (a 1955 jet), and nor is it inferior to -16 block 40's. The F-16 is more maneuverable but that's it. The J-10CP is beyond Turkish F-16's capabilities with more agility also, hands down.

According to a Turkish official contacted by Defense News, the most serious option would be the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced by a consortium bringing together BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo.

Anyway, the Turkish defense official interviewed by Defense News confirmed that the Typhoon can be an "option", with the prospect of an order of around 80 aircraft. “These planes can even be assembled in Turkey, although they have a higher price then,” he said.

The Turkish government has been looking for solutions to modernize its combat aviation, which is mainly based on old-generation F-16 C/Ds as well as F-4E Phantom IIs. In recent months, Ankara has thus discussed the possible purchase of Su-57 "Felon" or Su-35 "Flanker-E" from Russia... and has said that it is considering possible cooperation with the Russian aeronautical industry to carry out its TF-X next-generation combat aircraft program.

Then, recently, Turkey expressed its wish to acquire 40 latest version of the F-16, called "Viper", as well as 80 kits to modernize part of the old generation F-16s implemented by its air force.

Only, such an order will have to obtain the approval of the United States Congress... And this one is not necessarily in the best disposition with regard to Ankara, in particular because of the tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and its role in Syria, in Libya as well as in the last Nagorno-Karabakh war, having opposed Azerbaijan and Armenia, in October 2020. In addition, the purchase of the S-400 remains a bone of contention.

That said, Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine may be a game-changer for Ankara, which, as a reminder, is close to Kiev [to the point of providing it with Bayraktar TB-2 drones] while being dependent on Moscow for its energy and grain supplies. In addition, Turkey had the opportunity to recall that it is a "strategic" member for NATO due to its ability to block the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, thus limiting the movements of Russian warships. But it is not certain that this is likely to encourage the purchase of American F-16s… or even their reintegration into the F-35 program.

Time to lift 'unjust' sanctions on Turkey's defence industry, Erdogan tells Biden

ISTANBUL, March 10 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told U.S. President Joe Biden in a phone call on Thursday that it was past time to lift all "unjust" sanctions on Turkey's defence industry.

According to a statement from Erdogan's office, he also told Biden that Turkey expected its request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and modernise its existing fleet to be finalised as soon as possible

Thus Turkey's steadfast support for Ukraine and full alignment with NATO in this emerging situation. It would be better if Turkey got back on the F-35 program.

Oh for f.ck's sake, stop opening threads for every fake news you see

Dumbass

When Turkey can consider Russia then why not China for its FC-31 with home-grown sub-systems where preferred?

I don't think the Chinese are selling jet fighters to the Turks.

Americans are not giving them any. They are angry at Erdoğan.

Yeah but now all of NATO realizes how important Turkey is with Russia rearing it's head

They can't exactly rely on Greece can they

Why not just go for more F-16s?

They can't rely on Turkey either after all the backstabbing, but the Turks have a chance to show the Americans what good allies they are. Still...I don't know. The Russians don't want to attack any NATO country and the Americans probably want to let the Ukrainians do all the fighting.

Arm twisting the yanks that they have options

Turkey is probably trying to scare the Yanks to let them back into the F35 and sell F16Vs to them. I don't think this will work. Americans still don't want their F35 numbers leaked to the S400 systems. European fighters are more expensive than their tech performances can justify. I do think J10CE is a good gap filling until Turkey figures out where they want to go.

It is buying interest stocks in their relations with USA or just a gesture.
In the long run Turkey and NATO are on the opposite side of the world.
Wiser thing would be to develop own 4th and 5th Gen fighters to be as independent as possible.
Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia could all join hands developing 4th and 5th Gen fighters with engines from Russia, ukrain, while turkey's defense contractors like TUSAS, Havelsan, TEI work on turbofan engines.

Turkey looks after its own strategic interests and it's geo strategic location is now vital

NATO and the U.S can either play ball with Turkey or face the consequences of pushing it away

Like I said it's hardly like Greece is going to step up is it
