According to a Turkish official contacted by Defense News, the most serious option would be the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced by a consortium bringing together BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo.

Anyway, the Turkish defense official interviewed by Defense News confirmed that the Typhoon can be an "option", with the prospect of an order of around 80 aircraft. “These planes can even be assembled in Turkey, although they have a higher price then,” he said.

The Turkish government has been looking for solutions to modernize its combat aviation, which is mainly based on old-generation F-16 C/Ds as well as F-4E Phantom IIs. In recent months, Ankara has thus discussed the possible purchase of Su-57 "Felon" or Su-35 "Flanker-E" from Russia... and has said that it is considering possible cooperation with the Russian aeronautical industry to carry out its TF-X next-generation combat aircraft program.

Then, recently, Turkey expressed its wish to acquire 40 latest version of the F-16, called "Viper", as well as 80 kits to modernize part of the old generation F-16s implemented by its air force.

Only, such an order will have to obtain the approval of the United States Congress... And this one is not necessarily in the best disposition with regard to Ankara, in particular because of the tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and its role in Syria, in Libya as well as in the last Nagorno-Karabakh war, having opposed Azerbaijan and Armenia, in October 2020. In addition, the purchase of the S-400 remains a bone of contention.

That said, Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine may be a game-changer for Ankara, which, as a reminder, is close to Kiev [to the point of providing it with Bayraktar TB-2 drones] while being dependent on Moscow for its energy and grain supplies. In addition, Turkey had the opportunity to recall that it is a "strategic" member for NATO due to its ability to block the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, thus limiting the movements of Russian warships. But it is not certain that this is likely to encourage the purchase of American F-16s… or even their reintegration into the F-35 program.

Time to lift 'unjust' sanctions on Turkey's defence industry, Erdogan tells Biden

ISTANBUL, March 10 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told U.S. President Joe Biden in a phone call on Thursday that it was past time to lift all "unjust" sanctions on Turkey's defence industry.

According to a statement from Erdogan's office, he also told Biden that Turkey expected its request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and modernise its existing fleet to be finalised as soon as possible

Bad decision if Turkey want to buy Eurofighter, better upgrade and refurbished current F 16

The US (specifically, US Congress) weren't too keen on Turkey upgrading their F-16 beyond Block 50/52. My guess is that they will only approve MLU M7 tape when the greeks got their Block 70 F-16 first.

That's just how America maintains stability in the region. The greeks will be qualitatively better yet lack the number to do anything with it while Turkey will have a slightly inferior yet more numerous equipment, thus maintaining status quo.

Hence, Turkey is going for 100% indigenous for major assets, even if it means eating grass....

This shows the blow the Turkish aerospace has received from the US due to sanctions. From J-35 to F-16 V to EFT is a generation's worth of gap. This identifies the deep dependence on the US aerospace industry. I think Turkey can use an advance indigenous fighter program besides the TFX to form a Hi-Lo.

Turkey can say goodbye to any Russian prospects like SU-57, etc. The Russians are going to be sanctioned for a VERY long time to come, even McDonalds isn't doing business in Russia anymore, let alone selling $ 100 Mil a piece fighter jets.

USA blocked 100 F-35A to Turkiye
even Its seems USA doesnt sell 40 F-16 block70 to Turkiye

Eurofighter + METEOR Missile = the best option to intercept Russian SU-35 , French , Egyptian and Greek Rafale in the region

Turkey needs more Fighter Jets ..
F-4s are already outdated and 230 F-16s are not enough

even Egypt has 200+ F-16s , 50 MIG-29M2 , 36 Rafale and 24 SU-35

and we have seen Russia's invasion of Ukraine which can be a threat to Turkiye in the black sea , Syria , Libya , Bosnia and Karabakh/Azerbaijan

Turkish Air Force should be always strong and modern ( Turkey is not Indonesia or Pakistan .... ( from Russia to İran and from Greece-France to Egypt , there are many rivals in the region )

It will likely be at least 15 years until Turkiye can field the TFX fleets. Until then, its options for acquiring a stopgap fighter for its aging air force are extremely limited

from NATO = F-16 block70 or Eurofighter

if NATO Countries says no any Fighter Jet to Turkiye , then the last option is Russian Fighter Jet as like S-400

because Greece-France and Egypt take a hostile attitude towards Turkiye

The UK has around 30 'active' Tranche 1s which their useful airframe life have not yet been halved. Around 15 aircraft are also kept as spare parts. These planes would initially go out of service in 2019. Then it was delayed to 2025. And if I'm not mistaken, I've read a few other articles about the extension to around 2030. These planes have been a headache for the Royal air force in recent years. At first it was announced that these planes could not be upgraded to T2/T3, but later it turned out that this was not true, but still the problem was quite complex. Maintenance logistics, software problems and some specific design limits are known to exist.

If Britain wants to get rid of these planes it can give it to Turkey free of charge (by opening the mission computer and some other avionics to the Turks). As a result, these aircraft will be logistically dependent on the British aviation industry for at least another 15 years. Of course, in addition to the transfer of ready T1s, a purchase agreement can be made for example 2 fleet tranche4s.

This is hypothetical, but cant say it is improbable. Because most of the companies in the MMU project could be among the suppliers of the Team Tempest project. Likewise, the contribution of British and Italian companies to the MMU project is obvious.

Because Turkiye has a hostile attitude towards us. Are we going to have the conversation again?

Anyway, our guys too said a few months ago that the British Eurofighters are an option for the 24 new fighter jets the Air Force wants. The F-35 is the other competitor.

And not just that, the Russians are angry about Turkey giving TB2 and other weapons to Ukraine. Also, why go for a Russian aircraft now? I wonder if the Swedes would sell them Gripen. I think they refused to sell them.

Honestly though @dBSPL I don't think we'll go for the Eurofighter. The Americans keep talking about the F-35.

Meanwhile, now with all that stuff happening in Ukraine,I remember some Greeks on youtube comments saying "We should buy Mig-29s". Lol...

Even some Turks were talking about Su-30s,Su-35s and Su-57s. But I'm laughing because I remember Greeks saying stuff like "We should buy Mig-29s and Su-27s".

The issue now is how do you even go towards the Russian systems due to the Ukrainian conflict and sanctions?

They should buy the JF-17 block III from Pakistan and partner into a new jet based on a stealthy version of the J-10C airframe with minimal R&D due to existing production capacity. That's 5 years and you'd start to field 50 jets a year. Not a bad option considering I'd expect Turkey's relations to go sour with NATO due to their natural alliance with Greece.
