TSE Exclusive: Dav Whatmore backs Shoaib Malik for T20 captaincy

KARACHI (TheSportsEncounter), April 3, 2012: A remarkable show by former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik in the recently held Faysal Bank Super Eight Twenty20 Cup has impressed the national cricket team coach Dav Whatmore to the extent that the foreign coach is backing him to lead in the shortest format of the game.

Shoaib Malik excelled not only with the bat and ball during the country’s biggest T20 tournament but also showed captaincy charisma to inspire his side to record seventh domestic T20 title.

A competitive authority in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told TheSportsEncounter on Tuesday that Dav Whatmore is of the view that Pakistan cricket team needs a young captain especially in Twenty20 format and Shoaib Malik could be the best choice for this job. “Shoaib Malik has a huge experience of captaincy not only in the domestic circle but also in international arena and he also did a great job in the recent Faysal Bank Super Eight T20 tournament held in Rawalpindi” sources said.

They added, “Whatmore made sure his presence at the stadium right throughout the tournament and made a list of those cricketers who can represent Pakistan in international circuit and Shoaib Malik is among them”.

It is important to mention here that Shoaib Malik made 101 runs in three innings at an average of 50.50 and got 7 wickets giving away only 92 runs.

“Whatmore showed his liking for Shoiab Malik as captain and said that he may lead Pakistan in the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 2012. Whatmore was worried about T20 squad after he saw Pakistani team’s performance against England where Shoaib Malik also couldn’t perform well” sources said adding, “But now Shoaib Malik did an impressive job in the shortest format therefore Whatmore believes Shoaib can prove an aggressive captain for Pakistan as he is a clever all-rounder as well”.

It is merit mentioning here that Shoaib Malik is usually staying in headlines because of his good relations in political circle and some media reports claimed that he found a place back in the team due to his political friends.

“Yes you are saying right, we knew that he has good relations with a federal minster and some bureaucrats, and he might be working on this channel too, but right know he has impressed the new coach with his performance” sources mentioned.

Following a 4-0 whitewash in ODI series and a 2-1 debacle in T20 series against England, a debate has started in Pakistan whether to have three different captains for each format of the game.

“PCB chairman has also shown his concerned about the recent England bashing in limited overs cricket but he also made it clear that Pakistan don’t have enough resources but as now Whatmore has found potential in Shoaib Malik as captain for T20 format, we may see some changes in the team’s setup in coming days”, sources said adding, “Dav Whatmore also believes that Misbah-ul-Haq is still the best choice to lead Pakistan in Test cricket, while Mohammad Hafeez is best suited for ODI captaincy and Shoaib Malik is the right choice for T20 captaincy”.

Shoaib Malik is very poor player.Don't think he deserves captaincy.

you are right patriot... but misbah-ul-haq is also a very poor odi and t-20 player he also don't deserve captaincy of pakistan in odis and t-20 format....
