ARCHER FH 77 BW L52 Howitzer
The Archer 155mm, 52 calibre self-propelled howitzer developed by BAE Systems can strike stationary and mobile targets at land and sea. The capability to meet the present and future requirements of ground troops makes it one of the best howitzers in the world.

The artillery system features a fully automated 155mm/L52 gun and a Remotely Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) based on a 6x6 Volvo commercial articulated vehicle. The main gun delivers an intensive rate of fire of 21 rounds per 3.5 minutes and can fire all types of 155mm projectiles including advanced sensor-fused and precision-guided munitions.

The Archer system operates in conjugation with current command and control systems and delivers outstanding tracking capability to fire rounds for a maximum range of 50km. Its cabin is designed to protect the crew from artillery fragments, mines, and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) threats. The system completes the firing sequence and leaves the place of action in just 40 seconds. The highly mobile vehicle provides a maximum speed of 70km/h and a cruising range of 500km.

DONAR Artillery Gun Module (AGM)
The DONAR artillery gun module from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is a highly advanced 155mm howitzer based on the ASCOD 2 infantry fighting vehicle chassis supplied by General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS).

The DONAR system takes the traditional artillery doctrine to a new level by incorporating fully automatic firing module on highly mobile platform. The 35t system carries a combat load of up to 30 projectiles and 145 charges. It can fire can fire six rounds a minute for a maximum range of more than 40km, which can be increased to over 56km with the use of higher range munitions.

The armoured cabin protects the two-man crew against small arms, artillery splinters, mortar munitions and NBC threats. The module is equipped with hybrid inertial navigation and GPS, automatic fire control system, as well as auto tracking and correction features. The DONAR system can travel at a top speed of over 60km/h for a maximum range of 500km.


PzH 2000
The PzH 2000 is a highly mobile 155mm/L52 artillery system developed by KMW for the German Army. The capability to support conventional as well as asymmetric missions makes the PzH 2000 one of the most effective howitzers in the world. More than 330 PzH 2000 systems have been delivered to four Nato member countries to date.

The howitzer weighs 57t and can carry five crew members as well as a combat load of 60 projectiles and 288 charges. A fully automatic loading system, navigation system and fire control computer ensure the engagement of targets over the range of 56km at a rate of fire of eight to ten rounds a minute.

The PzH 2000 integrates the Built-In Test Equipment (BITE) system and can fire in Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) mode. The self-propelled artillery system has a maximum range of 420km.

CAESAR 155mm Howitzer
CAESAR is an effective self-propelled artillery system produced by Nexter Systems to deliver direct fire, counter-battery fire and coastal defence in support of motorised, mechanised and armoured units. It is capable of firing all standard Nato 155mm ammunition.

The CAESAR artillery system is currently operated by the armies of France, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Indonesia. The French Army successfully deployed CAESAR howitzers in Afghanistan and Lebanon. The system has a rate of fire of six rounds a minute and can fire Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) ammunition for 42km and rocket shells for a maximum distance of over 50km.

The armoured cab of the CAESAR offers level 2 STANAG 4569 protection, while a new cab with levels 2a and 2b mine and improvised explosive device (IED) protection is also available. The artillery is mounted on a 6x6 truck chassis and can be air-lifted by a C130 aircraft in a single load.

K9 Thunder
The K9 Thunder is a 155mm self-propelled artillery system developed by Samsung Techwin to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA). It is also produced under licence in Turkey as 'T-155 Firtina' (Storm). The South Korean Army received its first K9 systems in 1999 and is expected to induct more than 1,000 systems by 2016.

The 155mm/52-caliber gun fitted to the K9 offers a great fire power by firing projectiles at a rate of six rounds per minute for a maximum range of 41km. The howitzer is complemented by K10 fully automatic Ammunition Resupply Vehicle (ARV).

The K9 Thunder is powered by a MTU MT 881 Ka-500 eight-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine developing a power of 1,000hp. The propulsion system ensures a top speed of 67km/h and an operational range of 480km.
 
NORA-B/52 SP Gun-Howitzer
The Nora-B/52 is a new generation 155mm/L52 self-propelled howitzer produced by Yugoimport SDPR to replace the ageing artillery systems in service with Serbian Army. The open architecture of the system ensures the integration of subsystems according to the requirements of the customers.

The Serbian Army received first 12 NORA-B/52 systems in 2007. The artillery was also delivered to the armed forces of Myanmar, Kenya, and Bangladesh. The howitzer is capable of firing all standard NATO 155mm ammunition at a rate of six rounds per minute. It can strike targets within the range of 42km using Extended Range Full-Bore - Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) projectile.

The NORA-B/52 is equipped with an automatic gun loader. The armoured version offers protection against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and mines. The system, mounted on FAP 8x8 cross-country chassis, attains a maximum speed of 80km/h to 100km/h.

KRAB 155mm SPH
The KRAB 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) was developed by Huta Stalowa Wola for the Polish Armed Forces. The howitzer is intended to destroy batteries of artillery and anti-aircraft missiles, command posts, as well as enemy fortifications and mechanised detachments.

The artillery system integrates a 155mm/L52 howitzer firing all standard Nato 155mm ammunition. It is also fitted with ZZKO TOPAZ fire-control system, 12.7mm machine gun, and smoke grenade launchers. The KRAB can destroy the targets within the range of 40km with an intense rate of fire of six rounds per minute.

The artillery system is powered by a S12-U water cooled, turbocharged diesel engine developing a maximum power of 625kW at 2,000rpm. The maximum speed of the howitzer is 60km/h, while the range is 650km with full fuel tanks.

ATMOS 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer
The ATMOS (Autonomous Truck Mounted howitzer System) is a computerised 155mm self-propelled artillery system produced by Elbit Systems. It is a light, long-range, highly mobile artillery system addressing the critical requirements of today's land forces. The modular design of the ATMOS allows for integration on variety of qualified in-service trucks.

The system integrates the most advanced 52 calibre Nato standard gun system with a range of 41km. It can fire at an intense rate of five rounds per minute when fed by auto loader.

The ATMOS artillery system is equipped with inbuilt electronic suite offering increased fire power and accuracy. It can be mounted on any 6x6 or 8x8 in-service high mobility trucks with a modified protected cabin and special layout.
 
Paladin M109A6 PIM
The M109A6 PIM (Paladin Integrated Management) is the latest member in the family of M109 artillery systems developed by BAE Systems. The PIM is intended to enhance the performance of the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer and M992A2 Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle (FAASV).

The M109A6 Paladin is the most technologically-advanced self-propelled artillery system in the US Army inventory and replaces the components and sub-systems of the existing artillery with modem components for increased sustainability and survivability.

The M109A6 PIM is equipped with upgraded navigation and fire control systems, and can operate day and night firing at a rate of four rounds per minute for a range of 30km. The new 600hp engine fitted on the vehicle ensures shoot and scoot capability by providing a top speed of 61km/h.

The G6 155mm self-propelled howitzer

The G6 is a 155mm long-range gun developed and produced by the LIW division of Denel, mounted on a chassis made by Alvis OMC (now part of BAE Systems Land Systems). The G6 is in service with the South African Army (43 systems - GV6 Rhino) and has also been exported to the United Arab Emirates (78 systems - G6 M1A3) and Oman (24 systems).

The G6 155mm self-propelled howitzer is a highly autonomous system with 700km vehicle fuel range, 50km weapon range using velocity enhanced long range projectiles and the ability to fire the first round within 60 seconds of the vehicle stopping.

In September 2001, the G6 achieved a range of 53.6km using the new velocity-enhanced long-range projectile (V-LAP) and the new M64 bi-modular charge system. V-LAP combines base bleed and rocket motor technology, while the M64 charge system increases muzzle velocity to 910m/s VLAP is part of Denel's new Assegai range of 155mm ammunition.

The G6 is operated by a crew of six - driver, commander, gun layer, breech operator, ammunition loader and ammunition handler.

The 155mm main gun is equipped with a 45-calibre auto-frettaged barrel, a semi-automatic screw-type breech and an electrical trigger mechanism. The gun is fitted with a single-baffle open-type muzzle brake and a reinforced epoxy resin fume extractor.

The howitzer has on-board storage for 45 projectiles and 50 charges. Semi-automatic projectile loading is carried out using an electronically controlled hydraulic flick-rammer. Two loading chutes are installed at the rear of gun for direct loading from a ground ammunition pile.

Firing ports are provided for the crews' personal weapons and a machine-gun mounting is fitted on the left turret cupola with an optional machine-gun.
Extended-range full-bore ammunition (ERFB)
The gun is compatible with all Nato 155mm ammunition, including extended-range full-bore (ERFB) projectiles of explosive, cargo and practice types, which are all ballistically matched and with field-fittable base bleed units. The ERFB projectiles provide the G6 with increased range and terminal effectiveness. Using base-bleed projectiles, the G6 has a nominal range of 39km at sea level. As an example of the gun's accuracy, at 75% of the maximum range the probable error specification is 0.48% of the range value and 1mil in deflection.

A five-zone combustible case modular propelling charge system is based on cool-burning propellants which ensure a barrel life of more than 6,000 standard charges. The system is compatible with direct action, electronic timing or proximity type fuses.

G6 howitzer fire control systems
Target data is transmitted from a command and control centre to the commander's station in the crew compartment via a VHF/UHF communications link. The crew activates the gun by pressing an autolay button and the bearing, elevation and engagement data are downloaded to the automatic gun laying system.

The gun laying and navigation equipment comprises a ring laser gyroscope system equipped with a touchscreen control developed by the Kentron division of Denel. The gun has fully autonomous laying and navigation capability with no need for survey and alignment at the gun position. The system can be interfaced to an optional global positioning system (GPS). The system also has a back-up laying system. The gun is fitted with a trunnion mounted telescopic sight for direct firing up to 3,000m.

G6 self-protection systems
The G6 is fitted with eight launchers that fire 81mm smoke grenades. The high strength armour-plate hull protects the crew against small arms fire and shell splinters. The crew are protected against TM46 (or equivalent) landmine blast, 20mm gunfire from the front, and all around counter bombardment fragment and impact by 7.62mm ammunition.
The driving compartment is fitted with large bullet proof windows with an armoured shutter for the front window. When the armoured shutter is in place the driver uses a periscopic sight.

M109 155mm SP Howitzer
The 155-mm M109 series, Self-propelled medium howitzers are highly mobile combat support weapons. They are air transportable in phase III of airborne operation. They have a cruising range of 220 miles at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. Combat loaded, The M109 series weighs 27.5 tons. The M109A2/A3/A4 howitzers uses M185 cannon and achieves a range of 23,500 meters. The replacement of the 23 caliber long barrel with the M284 cannon 39-caliber barrel on the M109A5/A6 increased the range capability to 30,00 meters. The 155-mm Projectile weights 98 pounds.



The howitzer is a vehicle that provides armored combat support, is air transportable, internally loaded, and has excellent ground mobility. It allows firing in a 360 degree circle through its primary armament, the 155mm cannon assembly, and its secondary armament, the M2 heavy barrel caliber 50 machine gun. The system is capable of both direct (line of sight) and indirect (out of the line of sight) firing.

AVAILABLE MODIFICATIONS
Modifications of the Howitzers may vary to accommodate customer-desired capabilities. Each conversion is packaged in a kit for ease of shipment and delivery.

Differences between models
M109 SPH
The M109 was the first model, with a very short barrel, double baffle muzzle brake, large fume extractor, and a maximum range of 14,600m.
M109A1 SPH
The M109A1 featured a new longer barrel, and various other improvements, with a maximum range of 18,100m.
M109A2 SPH
The M109A2 is a new production weapon which incorporated 27 mid-life improvements to the M109A1. The improvements provide for increased Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability(RAM) and safety characteristics as well as enhanced operational capabilities.

The M109A2 has the long tube M185 cannon installed in the M178 gun mount. The cab has a rear bustle rack which provides an increased ammunition stowage capacity. It has an all weather ballistic shield mounted over the panoramic telescope; counterbalanced travel lock and provisions for mounting the M140 alignment device.

M109A3 SPH
The M109A3 is a depot converted M109A1 incorporating the 27 mid-life improvements. The operational characteristics of the M109A3 are virtually identical to the M109A2. Some M109A3s have three contact arm assemblies: all M109A2 have five contact arm assemblies.

M109A4 SPH
The M109A4 is a M109A2/A3 improvements include the addition of Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical/ Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (NBC/RAM) product improvement kits. The driver and cannoneer no. 2 have an air purifier and two heaters mounted in the hull. An air purifier and four heaters are mounted in the cab for the rest of the crew. NBC Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) gear is stored in the new cannoneer seats and stowage boxes.

The traversing mechanism is operates with a hydraulic clutch in the M109A4 instead of operating with an electric clutch as in the traversing mechanism in the M109A2/A3 howitzers. A clutch valve with an override valve provides for power traversing in the event of an electrical failure to the clutch valve solenoid. The M109A4 has two hydraulic filters mounted outside of the power pack. The M109A2/A3s have one internal hydraulic power pack filter.

The M109A4 has a combat override switch to allow for emergency starting. The slave start receptacle has been moved from the battery compartment to the driver's compartment. The M109A2/A3 100 amp alternator has been replaced by a 180 amp alternator. Crew compartment subfloor drains have been added to provide for the drainage of DS2 used in the NBC decontamination process and provide for the drainage of excess water.

M109A5 SPH
The M109A5 is a modified M109A4 it consists of two major improvements: a new M284 cannon and a new M182 gun mount. These improvements provide the M109A5 with greater range and allow for sustained fire for prolonged periods of time.

On 24 May 2000 the government of Egypt requested a possible sale of 279 M109A2/A3 155mm self-propelled howitzers, support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical data, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. government and contractor engineering and logistics personnel services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost was $48 million. Egypt will use these howitzers to replace aging Soviet towed artillery and to complement the modernization of the M1A1/M60A3 divisions.
THE FUTURE OF THE M109
The M109A2-A5 series of Howitzers gives the customer the maximum flexibility to tailor modifications to meet desired missions requirements and can accommodate future technology.

The M109A2-A5 series is economical to purchase, operate, and maintain. The M109 Family of howitzer continues to improve at considerable cost savings for the customer. It continues to be backed by the extensive life-cycle sustainment support of the weapon's proponent, The U.S. Army's Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command - Armament and Chemical, Acquisition and Logistics Activity (ACALA).
