SRINAGAR: Three separatist guerrillas were killed in a gunfight with security forces in north Kashmir on Thursday, a defence officer said.
"Based on specific information about the presence of terrorists in Mankal forest of Baramulla district, a joint operation was launched by the army's 1 Naga Regiment and the Jammu and Kashmir Police late yesterday (Wednesday) night," Srinagar-based 15 Corps spokesman Lt.Col. J.S. Brar told IANS.
"Contact was established with the terrorists today (Thursday) morning and in the ensuing gunfight, three unidentified terrorists, likely to be foreigners, have been killed. The identity of the slain terrorists is being ascertained. Search operations are in progress".
Brar said three AK-47 rifles, a pistol, an under barrel grenade launcher, Rs.20,000 cash in Indian currency, two compasses, a Global Positioning System, a radio set, a mobile phone, maps and a large quantity of ammunition including grenades, have been recovered from the slain guerrillas.
The defence spokesman, however, did not confirm whether or not the group of guerrillas had infiltrated into the valley from across the Line of Control (LOC).
"That can only be confirmed after the searches in the area are over," the spokesman said.
