Security personnel stand guard at the Red Fort as Modi addresses the nation on Aug 15

NEW DELHI: PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi gave jitters to his security detail when he suddenly stopped before boarding his car following his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort and moved into a children’s enclosure.

The spontaneous act, which was appreciated by the children who were thrilled to have the prime minister amidst them, sent waves of panic through the Special Protection Group (SPG) that forms the inner circle of Modi’s security.

Thorough job

This was the first time in recent years that a prime minister broke away from the strict protocol followed at national functions and the SPG was perhaps not prepared for the detour.

Thankfully for the security agencies, there were no more hiccups in the foolproof security cover prepared for the event at the Red Fort to deal with any eventuality. An estimated 10,000 security personal from Delhi Police, paramilitary forces and the SPG were deployed to secure Prime Minister Modi’s maiden speech from the Red Fort.

The Independence Day speech is always a well guarded event, but this time the security forces went an extra mile. Regulars at the event said that there was more aggression in the entire set-up but the hallmark of the arrangements was the smooth conduct.

Even those living around the Red Fort in areas like Chandni Chowk said the security agencies were more alert this time. All vantage points across Chandni Chowk and surrounding areas were taken over by snipers around a week before the event.

The SPG deployed its personnel in combat gear, carrying F2000 bullpup assault rifles and Glock pistols, at the Red Fort. The inner circle of the SPG were in their hallmark black suits, openly sporting P90 personal defence weapon. The weapons are not concealed by SPG personnel during big events like Independence Day or Republic Day.

The standard drills for protecting the airspace and dealing with contingencies like an aerial attacks were also in place. Anti-aircraft guns and the air defence mechanism was on full alert during the speech, which lasted a little more than an hour.

Every corner of the venue and the crowd were under the watch of a massive network of close circuit television cameras, which were positioned at all vantage points. Even the route taken by the Prime Minister to reach the Red Fort was under strict surveillance and the police control room received real- time pictures of all activities.

BREAK-UP OF MODI’S I- DAY SECURITY COVER

  • More than 7,000 security personnel deployed for the security in and around Red Fort.
  • Air defence machinery activated. Anti-aircraft guns, air defence missiles on active positions.
  • Snipers positioned at all vantage points surrounding the venue; More than 500 CCTV cameras kept vigil.
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams deployed for negating any ground attack.

Do they have the same training as the US Secret Services? I see this all over the world countries have copied the model and dress code of Secret Services.

Were these strong men vetted?

Would they turn their guns on Modi like they did to Indira?

They are one of the finest in our Armed Forces.

PM security become this high after Indira and Rajivs incident.
yeah...heard that after Indira's incident only hindu's are recruited for SPG. Is it true that SPG recruit's family, relatives, even their grandfathers should be free from any criminal records and should have clean image?

No even Christians are recruited but man they have multi dimensional screening and verification process and even if your grand father was remotely standing anwhere near to a enemy of the nation be assured that you wont be recruited.

Every member of the SPG has to pass a very extensive background check conducted by the IB and their family has to be clean for at least 3 generations.

I'm pretty sure they are well trained.
Of course, their training is more than a year long and out of every 7 day period an SPG agent will be undergoing proficiency training for 3-4 days.

I still say no. This briefcase gun exists for covert carrying of a PDW but the SPG don't use it- what would be the point when the SPG overtly carry P-90s as part of the PM's inner security team. The briefcase the SPG agent carries is a folded kevlar blanket that will be thrown over the PM in the event of any attack.

Nonsense, there are Sikhs, Muslims, and Christians in the SPG in all its branches.

Another thread worth a read for those interested in the SPG:
