The JF-17 is the strongest candidate to become Argentine Air Force future fighter jet

China will never sell J-10 or any advance equipment to Argentina. Because of the country relationship with the US.

Argentina has had a lot of backdoor deal with the US both pre and post Falkland War. In fact, I am pretty sure Argentina is still a major reliant to US equipment til today. That's why they went for F-16.

On the other hand, a military base in Argentina is almost certainly out of equation, first the aforementioned relationship with the US, second, China cannot maintain that base if there is a war going on, to supply that base in Argentina would mean the Chinese Military need to venture out into US controlled East Pacific or went the long way round into NATO controlled Atlantic. I would imagine if there is a war involve China, US and NATO will close access to those location, that is if they are not directly involved to begin with
But decade old second hand f16s without BVR are pretty useless for Argentina

True & F-16 is pretty much an open source aircraft, Even Indonesia managed to do to an upgrade on their own. If the Argies wanted it they can shop around for upgrades.

The world is not like a supermarket, you can't just waltz into a shop and get what you want to get.

It's depends on a lot of factors, money, geopolitical affiliation and need, I am pretty sure if everything else is not considered and we just go by need, then every country on earth would want a 5th Gen Fighter......

They are getting the Dane F-16 and the Dane was replacing them with F-35.

Those aren't bad F-16, I think they just went thru the MLU and still have a lot of useful mile on them.

No jf17 block 3 or j10c is more powerful/potent contender than your Dane f16

I never said Danish F-16 is better or worse than JF-17 Block 3 or J-10C, I don't know, maybe they are, maybe they are not. And honestly, even if people in the know will not tell people like us whether this is better than that, so I don't think it's possible to compare the two system objectively. Taking anyside is more or less just fan-boying.

What I said is, you can't always get what you wanted. You need to consider things other than "NEED", do you have the cash to buy those system? How would it integrate into your system, what are the political repercussion of buying said system. Again, if you just want to say this or that, then it's pointless, if all these are not in consideration and we are just talk, then why not saying China should sell J-20 or J-31 to Argentina?? Or why not talk about US selling F-22 to Argentina??

The Danes will be giving 19 out of 30 F-16s to Ukraine.
While the Danish Air Force has received a few F-35s, they are all in the US.
The first F-35 will arrive in Denmark later this year.
Does Denmark really have enough F-16s to sell?

I honestly don't know, I am just commenting on the news.

USA to approve sale of Danish F-16s to Argentina

I mean, it came from Flight Global, so it kind of legit source.

The bid submitted for the JF-17 weapon system complies with all the requirements established by the Argentine Air Force.

Details were given on the requirements established by the Argentine Air Force (FAA) and the models studied for its future supersonic multi-role fighter in a September report provided by the Chief of Cabinet of Ministers to the Argentine Congress, Aviacionline Defensa reports.

Deputies of PRO (opposition party to the current Government) made the following diagnosis before asking questions to the Chief of Cabinet about the future incorporation of a supersonic fighter for the Argentine Air Force (FAA):

«At present, only a handful of A-4AR aircraft are in limited operational conditions. The aforementioned complement is not even a deterrent, much less sufficient to guarantee the integrity of the vast national territory.

Not only are the current capabilities patently insufficient, but they have also become dangerous for aviators, which could result in invaluable human losses of highly qualified military personnel. The situation of the equipment and its capabilities is serious and dangerous, affects the fundamental function of the force and allows the infringement of national sovereignty.»

The FAA established the following requirements the Chief of Staff said:

  • Multi-role supersonic fighter.
  • In-flight refueling capability compatible with the FAA’s existing refueling aircraft.
  • Airborne electronically scanning radar (AESA).
  • Tactical Data Link capability.
  • Electronic self-defense capability.
  • Logistic and temporal potential and projection.
  • No components of British origin.
  • Availability (supply) for the use of armament.
The models under evaluation are the following:

  • JF-17
  • F-16
  • HAL TEJAS
  • MIG-35
There is no mention of the Israeli offer for the Kfir.

The bid submitted for the JF-17 weapon system complies with all the requirements established by the FAA and includes according to the information submitted by the Argentine Ministry of Defense:

JF-17-Block-III.jpeg

Visit of the Argentine Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to Pakistan, where he had a first-hand look at the JF-17 Block III offered.
  • Technology transfer to national companies
  • Spare parts
  • Simulators
  • Instruction for personnel
  • WS-13 engines of Chinese origin
  • Ejector seat of Chinese origin
  • Short- and medium-range air-to-air missiles (BVR capability)
  • Ninety percent compatibility with JF-17 Block IIIs being manufactured by Pakistan for its own Air Force
  • All material is free of restrictions
The JF-17 Thunder is a single-engine multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation of China. The builders say that the JF-17 can be used for multiple roles, including interception, ground attack, anti-ship, and aerial reconnaissance.

58% of the JF-17 airframe, including its front fuselage, wings, and vertical stabiliser, is produced in Pakistan, whereas 42% is produced in China, with the final assembly taking place in Pakistan.

The JF-17 Block III is the latest version of this type with a new electronically scanned radar as well as advanced electronics.

Second-hand Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets such as those offered by the US so far, could not meet the requirements (they lack AESA radar and they can’t be refueled by FAA KC-130H aircraft).

Anyway, while it is clear that there is a higher degree of knowledge about the JF-17 than about the other weapon systems mentioned, and that negotiations with China have been more in-depth than with the other bidders, all is not yet said and done.

In fact India is actively advertising its Tejas light fighter for the FAA, which was specifically mentioned in the work agenda established by the two countries to strengthen their bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile the US will do everything possible to prevent Argentina from buying Chinese or Russian defense material, so as not to allow the establishment of military relations with its geopolitical opponents in the region.

As already reported, the FAA has been searching for a new supersonic fighter aircraft since when the Dassault Mirage III interceptor fleet was retired in 2015.

It looks like the UK is the biggest hurdle: in the last years in fact Argentina tried to purchase JAS-39 Gripen fighters from Sweden and KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle jets from South Korea but since these aircraft use British equipment such as ejection seats built by Martin Baker, the UK blocked both the options.

The same may happen to the Tejas because of the British manufactured parts in the aircraft.

According to Janes, other potential solutions that have been reported included surplus Spanish Mirage F1s and Tranche 1 Eurofighter Typhoons, Leonardo M-346FA/FTs, CAC J-10s, and Aero L-159s. Even the Sukhoi Su-24 ‘Fencer’ (although this is widely believed to have been a hoax) and the new Sukhoi Checkmate were touted.

It would be good for JF-17's reputation if Argentina buys it.

The only hurdle will be budget and pro US party in Argentina government. But one thing for sure, they are all united on the issue of Falkland. Even the most hardcore Argentina US supporter will be hard to argue against reclaim of Falkland.

What else are they going to buy. Tejas ain't happening because of UK/EU/US parts in it, especially engine. Unless the Chinese offer them J-10's, which is unlikely.

J10c is more suitable to Argentina than block 3 JF17 in my opinion because Argentina is almost big as India but price would be the problem

That's why this whole thread is silly for even mentioning the F-16 being in the running.

The only way Argentina will pick the F-16 is if the other three (JF-17, HAL Tejas, and Mig-35) are somehow considered even more unacceptable due to unreliability or something.
Not really
If they offer me f16s for free they will take it

Argentina isn't going to go for war against British

They want a platform mostly for air patrol, reconnaissance and bombing

F16S if provided cheaply fits the bill

The cheaper fighter will win

Hi,

It will be a miracle if argentina gets the JF17---.

The one country that could be a buyer of the JF 17 and has funds---is in the lower half of africa. It is not zimbabwe and not nigeria either---.

South Africa has more fighters than they need. They keep rotating Gripens in and out of storage.
