What's new

The hanuman syndrome

Am I the only one who notices the extremely skewed angle of view of the author? Not every analysis the author has made is correct.

India is going through drastic changes (From a poor country with Hindu Growth rate, to a promising economic powerhouse of the new era in just 20 years - not even a complete generation), and people take time to change themselves with the changing times.

India is indeed unique, and small things such as visa rejection matter should not bring the country's strength into question. Also, I have not seen any other country in the world where all the people stand united for someone who was merely rejected a visa.

And about handling of terrorism, India is certainly never going to bypass the laws simply to assert its points more forcefully.

This article looks more to be advocating a war with Pakistan for the sole cause of asserting India's capabilities. The arguments put forth aren't worth more than a cent. And it would serve India better to not underestimate the capabilities of Pakistan.

While the article is indeed a bit too harsh, but it underlines a major problem in Indian Personality as a country. While everyone recognises India's giant leaps in economic terms and to a lesser extent in Military terms too, the same has not been in sync with our diplomacy. Imagine, India just after getting freedom was playing a bigger role in International diplomacy & politics, thanks to initiatives like NAM where we "assumed" leadership roles.
Now that international community want India to take a stand over international issues, we fall back. We just dont want (or our leadership is afraid of) to be assertive. Sooner or later, we need to take our own stand over critical international issues (just like NAM for example where we led a lot of countries against joining any of the two superpowers), the sooner the better.

And who says to underestimate Pakistan? Its the other way round. We need to make them realize that you cant just make out an 26/11 and get away with it easily. And there are other ways of doing it than war.

Diplomacy is like Group discussions for your campus placements. You might be the most intelligent of the lot, you might have the most brilliant ideas, but you still need to speak and "make" others listen to get the job.

It is time India stops searching for 'respect' on the world stage. We need to instill 'fear' in the hearts of all those who dare hurt us. This world does not run by respect. Fear is the word which drives international relations.

Fear and respect are two different things. I agree that we shouldn't do merely because for looking good in other eyes. We should develop ourselves so that world is bound to respect us. And I am happy India is doing good in this regard.

Now about article, I am satisfied with what happened after Canada episode was brought into govt knowledge. Within a day they took a U-turn. GoI also accepted their regret and closed the matter which IMO was very mature response. Same thing happened with Australia. However we should not push just others because we have power. India has taken tough posture whenever required whenever it is a third-party-in Kashmir or stapled visa issue or Gorshkov. We should not cast doubt on GoI without any base.

why would it happens then with respect to India that Indian ministers were frisked at international airports defying protocols? can/have we ever done so with respect to other country's diplomats/ministers? why is India's envoy to be woken up at 2 am night? just to register a protest, or there are some subtle motives of bullying behind it?

why is it that a junior envoy in canadian embassy keep on rejecting visas of current & former defence personnel branding their(our)forces as violent, for 2 years(and GoI came to know about it when the news is published by media!!)? which armed force in the world is "peaceful" for that matter?
why is it that India is bought to the table for talks with our neighbour when we are made to bleed with terror sponsored by that country ? Why is it that we are looked upon as too mild a country to the extent of being termed as cowards? why is it that despite of growing economic influence and spending billions of $ for modernising our armed forces, we are never taken seriously as a military/geopolitical power?

We have to admit that there is some serious flaws with our international diplomacy. for, unless we admit it, we will never be able to change the things for good.
