H-21 Shawnee helicopterActually, it's USS Core
USS Core (CVE-13) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On December 11, 1961, the USNS Core docked in the Saigon Port to unload 32 H-21 Shawnee helicopters and more than 400 U.S. soldiers from the 57th Transport Company from Fort Lewis, and the 8th and 9th Transport Companies from Fort Bragg
USNS Card - aircraft transport - 9,800 ton sunk in 2 May 1964 in Saigon by 2 Vietnamese special force troops.
This maybe ever called as one of US Aircraft carriers sunk by North Vietnam.
Well by 1964 it was really a helicopter cargo ship as it was completely useless in the jet age. The US already had about 10 supercarriers with the Forestal class, KittyHawk class, and the Enterprise.
I just want to explain for a misquoted text, by someone.
USS Core in Saigon
Not sure whose planes those are on the USNS Core (not Card) in 1960 (French? Scout planes? Old WW2 era given to Vietnam?) but the US was already in the jet age by the Korean War and were using Forestal class carriers before 1960. By 1964 when the USNS Card ( Attack on the USNS Card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) was sunk the Enterprise and KittyHawk classes were already in service with F4 Phantoms.
