The project "ROSE" (Retrofit of Strike Element") was set up to reclaim as many airplanes as possible and to upgrade them with latest avionics. Originally it was thought that only 20 - 25 airframes could be made operational but eventually, more than 40 airframes were refurbuished and put back in service.

The avionics upgrade included fitting of HUD, HOTAS controls, RWR's chaff / flare and most important of all the retrofit of FIAR Griffo Radar. This radar is the Italian copy of APG-68 and has full look down shoot down capability. At present No 7 Squadron is inducting a BVR weapon of South African origin.

radar range ~50 KM or miles (?) and missile is probably A-Darter (rumoured) or copy (with chinese help)

could be a R-darter for stop gaps?? but why would they induct another BVR AAM in additional to SD-10 MICA AMRAAM? or does PAF find R-Darter very close to Derby missiles in IDAF and considering worth it?

A-Darter is not a BVR missile. In Darter series, there were discussions of T-Darter/R-Darter as BVRs in the recent past. R-Darter (Radar Darter) was reportedly used on South African Cheetah fighters. R-Darter is also called as V4.

Cheetah was an upgraded and modified Mirage III series fighter. Cheetahs have been recently retired and JAS-39 Grippen shall replace them. The following link says that R-Darter has been retired alongwith Cheetahs, although some links suggest that its not been retired completely. T-Darter seems to be the future replacement of R-Darter. R-Darter is strikingly similar to Israeli Derby.

The South African Air Force

Retired Cheetahs may interest PAF if they want to maintain Mirage III fleet for still some time, if they are offered at throw-away prices.

It is interesting to note that Brazil even equipped its small F-5 fighters with BVR Derby missiles. F-5 is a small fighter which was originally designed for close combat only. India may also equip its LCA with Derby.

I highly doubt that PAF will precure something new as BVRAAM for aeging mirages, no doubt they ll stay for another couple of years but there is a big ???, while the platform like JF-17 is being inducted.

These could have been another rumours some what similar to AIM-7 sparrow, or perhaps something confidential, which PAF is famous of.:pop:

Even after Rose upgrade Mirages Will be retired from PAF slowly and gradually so in the mean Time PAF also wants Mirages to Have BVR capability in case we are forced into a Conflict.

JF-17 is PAF's Prime Focus and Lets see What PAF Inducts in Thunder's Arsenal. New F-16 Block 50/52 and J-10 will also Enhance the PAF's Fighting Capabilities.

Sweet pictures of the Mirage ROSE glass cockpit. If PAF wants them to be BVR capable, they can simply integrate SD-10 with their Grifo M3 radars. Right now they are probably more useful as trainers for aerial refuelling and strike platforms though, hence the fitting of aerial refuelling probes.

Are these your words or is it from some report/news? In case this is from a report, how old is it?

just want to know so we can speculate on the "at present".
