Tata Motors Reveals India's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus

Tata Motors launched the future of mass public transportation at its Pune facility and took another step in the direction of green technology and mobility solutions. The company launched the Starbus Electric 9m, Starbus Electric 12m and the Starbus Hybrid 12m range of buses which are designed, developed, powered by alternate fuels and made in India. The company says will be a good for smart cities. The company also showcased the country's first Fuel Cell bus (12m), LNG Powered bus (12m), and an 18m Articulated bus.

The Hydrogen Powered Starbus Fuel Cell bus is a zero-emission mass transport solution, for inter-city commute and has been developed in partnership with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). Combining hydrogen gas and oxygen, the fuel cell produces electricity to power the electric motor, with water and heat as a byproduct. This is the first time an Indian manufacturer has ventured in this direction. As far as Electric buses are concerned, Tata Motors finds a rival in the form of Ashok Leyland who recently revealed the Circuit series of all-electric buses which was in fact India's first of its kind.

The company has already extensively tested the CNG hybrid buses across the country in cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat and we first saw them in New Delhi during the 2010 Commonwealth games.

It was just last year that the company signed a contract for the single largest order for Hybrid Electric vehicle technology, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), to supply 25 units of the Starbus Diesel Hybrid electric bus with Full Low floor configuration. These buses will be delivered in the first quarter of FY2017-18 and will connect Sion, Bandra & Kurla to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director - Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors said, "We have consistently been developing and manufacturing products that can contribute to CO2 reductions across all road transport segments and with early investments in new technologies, we are geared up to further strengthen our market leadership. With our new range of Future ready buses, we will continue to play an active role in mass public transportation, with a commitment towards striking the right balance between sustainable growth and profitability."

Our public transport bus service is a huge market. Top quality buses still been bought from foreign companies
 
They will look and feel much cheaper in reality though. Companies know that there is no point putting in money to make it look good, Indian crowd will make it look like a kabada in few months by spitting, throwing plastic wrappers and damaging the bus.

Public places and transport can be really disgusting places. Especially some railway stations.

The only way I see these buses working is if the fee is high enough to weed out lower class people that think its okay to spit anywhere and damage public property.

I remember a couple of years back while I was in chennai and a new bus stop had just been built with led lamps, looked quite beautiful. 2 days later, the lamps went missing and today you'll probably find all kinds of stickers plastered over it.

You could say maintenance is not there but people need to be responsible towards a service they are constantly using as well.

AC buses in most states are good. Its just the deluxe and normal buses which gets damaged and shambles in a year or 2

Maybe because the crowd is different in both buses.

TATA was trialed for school bus project in Saudi and guess what they over heated...it turned out TATA provided the smallest cheapest radiator they could get by...when modification were attempted to fit a radiator big enough for a full load of bus under hottest driving conditions..there wasnt enough space...most of the busses were then auctioned off for labour transport...while the govt parted ways and went to Chinese buses from King Long...the losses cost the dealer its distribution rights of TATA bus and truck..and TATA moved over to new distributor..Al Manahil Co.

Had they replaced entire Jaguar leadership with Indians and moved the back office to Banglalore then Indians would deserve credit for it but guess what..even the biggest Indian business man loves gora workforce..

Actually, Jaguar is worst than heap of sh1t..it never took off in Saudi and now a days not even seen on roads...my friend bought a brand new one and the inside reeked from noises of plastic friction...I would rather drive an Accord or Mazda 6 than overweight and overpriced Jaguar..

May be bus go to villages but I didn't notice anything like that in Towns and cities..
