ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Afghan Taliban led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is arriving in Pakistan on Wednesday as part of a renewed push to revive the stalled Afghan peace process.

Taliban Spokesperson Suhail Shaheen announced the visit on Twitter and said the delegation will hold discussions with Pakistani officials on a range of key issues.

A Taliban official who declined to be identified told Reuters that the delegation would inform Pakistan’s leadership of the factors that derailed the talks with the United States, aimed at striking a deal allowing US and other foreign troops to withdraw in exchange for Taliban security guarantees.

In the month since US President Donald Trump called off talks with the Taliban, the group’s co-founder Mullah Baradar has travelled to China, Russia and Iran.

Imran’s Saudi-Iran mediation offer has slim chance of success

He is now heading to Islamabad at a time when US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, NATO’s Afghanistan chief General Austin Scott Miller and an American congressional delegation are already in the Pakistani capital.

Khalilzad, who arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for talks with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership, is expected to meet the Taliban delegation.

The congregation in Islamabad of key players in the Afghan peace push comes on the heels of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s meeting with US President Trump in New York.

The Taliban official who spoke to Reuters said they also planned to follow up on PM Imran’s comments ahead of the Trump meeting, that he would try to convince the US president to restart the Afghan peace talks.

Trump halted talks with the Taliban at a time when both sides had said they were close to reaching a deal. The US president had cited the death of a US soldier and 11 other people in a Taliban bomb attack in Kabul as the reason for the abrupt decision.

After Doha, Moscow, Beijing and Tehran, welcome to Islamabad. Keep it up and hang on tough.
Pak-China. Pak-Turkey. Pak-Saudi. Pak-Malaysia. Pak-Afghanistan. More to follow. Pak integrated. Pakistan is emerging on globe as peace keeper country in region and this is what Islam teach us .
