KABUL: Three women and 11 men were flogged Wednesday on the orders of an Afghan court after they were found guilty of theft and “moral crimes”, a provincial official said.

The lashings are the first to be confirmed since the Taliban’s supreme leader ordered judges this month to fully enforce Islamic law, or Sharia, saying corporal punishment was obligatory for certain crimes.

Qazi Rafiullah Samim, head of information and culture for Logar province, told AFP the lashings were not administered publicly.

“Fourteen people were given discretionary punishment, of which 11 were men and three were women,” he said,

“The maximum number of lashes for anyone was 39.”

Supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada ordered judges this month to fully enforce aspects of Islamic law that include public executions, stonings and floggings, and the amputation of limbs for thieves.

“Carefully examine the files of thieves, kidnappers and seditionists,” he said, according to the Taliban’s chief spokesman.

“Those files in which all the Sharia conditions of hudud and qisas have been fulfilled, you are obliged to implement.”

Hudud refers to offences for which corporal punishment is mandated, while qisas translates as “retaliation in kind” – effectively an eye for an eye.

Social media has been awash for months with videos and pictures of Taliban fighters meting out summary floggings to people accused of various offences.

Social media has been awash for months with videos and pictures of Taliban fighters meting out summary floggings to people accused of various offences. However, this is the first time that officials have confirmed such punishment ordered by a court.Other countries have been scrutinising the Taliban’s track record on human rights and women’s rights since they took over in August 2021 after a two-decade insurgency.

No foreign government has formally recognised the Taliban’s administration and many have already heavily criticised its reversal on signals they would open secondary schools nationwide for girls in March.

Hundreds of loudspeakers have been installed in the Afghan capital to encourage worshippers to attend prayers, the Taliban’s religious enforcers said on Wednesday.

The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice also said that hundreds of empty shops and other disused buildings had been recently converted into mosques to give everyone the opportunity to pray communally.

“During the previous government, some of the loudspeakers were removed and people were not able to listen to the Azan (call to prayer),” the ministry tweeted.

It said 400 loudspeakers had been installed in different parts of Kabul “so the people could listen to the Azan at the same time”.

Afghanistan is a huge liability for Pakistan. Their export of extremism into Pakistan society is a bigger threat than Hindutva ideology on the east.

Pakistan needs to control its border with Afghanistan vigilantly.

I wish Pakistan could afford to build a really strong and tall wall along the internationally recognized border between the two countries. You are absolutely right, and this would be much better for both countries.

As a patriotic Pakistani i think this is justifiable. Because due to that border we are facing terrorism for so long sadly . We need to keep our army busy on that border out of politics lol . They take a lot of advantages from our border but still they betray us with India. Smuggling, terrorism, TTP, Narcotics etc. I’m also on for it building a continuous border wall that includes your border to stop your Iran Indian funded terrorists infiltrating casualties on Pakistanis from your occupied Baluchistan.

That’s the pretty sad don’t you think so . You agreeing to it too, The wall between you and us I am recommending to be built asap wouldn’t have been needed if your stupid regime hadn’t brought in Indian terrorists dressed as your business men to attack our Baluchistan spreading terror in side it. Sure, sure, Afghans till now will erasing their children's hunger by just putting them to sleep by giving them anxiety tablets instead of filling their stomach with food, because the parents don't have money to buy food nor will the Taliban provide them free food but now the Taliban have given them another way to forget food - prayers :

Afghans are giving their hungry children medicines to sedate them - others have sold their daughters and organs to survive, the BBC reported yesterday, noting that in the second winter since the Taliban took over and foreign funds were frozen, millions are a step away from famine in Afghanistan.

Many Afghans reportedly give drugs - alprazolam (tranquilizers usually prescribed to treat anxiety disorders), escitalopram (is used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic attacks) and sertraline a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin (a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) – to their hungry children so that they feel drowsy.

Doctors say that when given to young children who do not get adequate nutrition, drugs such as these can cause liver damage, along with a host of other problems like chronic fatigue, sleep and behavior disorders.
At local pharmacy outside Herat, people reportedly can buy five tablets of the drugs being used for 10 Afghanis (about 10 US cents), or the price of a piece of bread.
Most families are reportedly sharing a few pieces of bread between them each day.

The UN has said a humanitarian "catastrophe" is now unfolding in Afghanistan.

The BBC says a majority of the men in the area outside Herat work as daily wage laborers. They have been leading difficult lives for years.

But when the Taliban took over last August, with no international recognition for the new de-facto government, foreign funds flowing into Afghanistan were frozen, triggering an economic collapse which left the men with no work on most days.

On the rare day they do find work, they make roughly 100 Afghanis, or just over US$1.00.

People are reportedly being forced to take extreme steps to save their families from hunger. Some people had surgery to remove their kidney. For this, they are paid about 27,000 Afghanis (equivalent to US$3,100), most of which go into repaying money they had borrowed to buy food for their families.

The BBC notes that selling organs for money is not unheard of in Afghanistan. It used to happen even before the Taliban takeover. But now, even after making such a painful choice, people are reportedly finding that they still cannot find the means to survive.

Besides, people are reportedly selling their daughters because they have no money to buy food.

The dignity that people here led their lives with has been broken by hunger, the BBC says.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reportedly seen the rate of admissions at their facilities treating malnutrition across the country increase by as much as 47% this year over the last.

MSF's feeding center in Herat is the only well-equipped malnutrition facility catering not just to Herat, but also to the neighboring provinces of Ghor and Badghis, where malnutrition rates have gone up by 55% over the last year.

Who needs food when you can sustain yourself happily on prayers. The Taliban will easily arrange for prayers as ever. And since you don't need food you can as well sell your organs to invest that money to pay SpaceX for a future seat on the Mars cruise.
