PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber blew himself up at Peshawar's packed Qayyum sports stadium on Tuesday, killing two people and wounding five others, police said.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

The bombing took place at the closing ceremony of a sports event attended by senior government officials including the provincial governor, police said.

'We have received two dead bodies and five injured people,' police official, Khan Abbas, told AFP at Peshawar's main Lady Readings Hospital.

Peshawar is the capital of North West Frontier Province, which borders Afghanistan.

'The bomber was stopped by the police and when he failed to enter the stadium he blew himself up at the gate,' provincial police chief Malik Naveed told reporters.

'We had some intelligence and took precautionary measures, that's why he could not enter the stadium,' he said.

He said it was difficult to say who was behind the bombing, but that it 'could be linked to the unrest in the tribal areas' bordering Afghanistan.

The attack took place after a ceremony marking the end of the week-long national games, local administration chief Sahabzada Anis told reporters .

Up to 30,000 people including hundreds of sportsmen from across the country had taken part in the games, he said.

Most of the spectators had left but several ministers and senior officials were on their way out of the venue when the bomber blew himself up.

'Provincial Governor Owais Ghani had left the stadium moments ago,' police officer Pervez Khan told AFP, adding that at least six vehicles parked outside the gate were also damaged. Tajiks, Uzbeks among those killed in Waziristan

RIP to the victims.

These terrorists are real scum, targeting innocent civilians. why don't they just grow some b@lls and fight like real men?

Sh** where are these lunatics coming from? Does everyone still think suicide bombing is halal? Shame on this lunatic and his kind.

Lets pay tribute to the sacrifice of the police jawans.

You are for ever getting abuse from us cynical Pakistanis, yet you lay down your lives for the homeland day in and day out.

All Pakistanis must appreciate and honour the valour and sacrifice of the police force in this struggle. :pakistan:

Evidence collection goes underway at Peshawar blast site
Updated at: 1130 PST, Wednesday, November 12, 2008
PESHAWAR: The investigative committee of Peshawar police has begun its activities by collecting pieces of evidence from the site of the deadly suicide blast that occurred here on Tuesday.

The sources of the committee have said severed body parts of the suicide bomber are being collected which will later be sent for DNA tests.

The yesterday’s blast appears to have a link with the series of explosions that hit the city over the past few months, the sources added.

The investigation report of the blast will be presented before the government soon.

Bilour was the target: TTP
PESHAWAR: Taliban operating in the semi-tribal Darra Adam Khel claimed responsibility for the attack and said that senior NWFP minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour was their target. A spokesman for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban talked to reporters by telephone. Violence linked to Pakistan’s role in the US-led war on terror has claimed the lives of more than 1,300 people in suicide and bomb attacks since July 2007. Many of the attacks have targeted police and security forces. Most of them have either been claimed by or blamed on Taliban. Security forces are currently involved in fierce clashes with Al Qaeda and Taliban since military operations were launched chiefly in Bajaur and Swat. More than 1,500 Taliban and 73 soldiers have died since the fighting began while hundreds of Taliban have been captured, according to the military. staff report
