NASA has spotted a mysterious symbol on the surface of Mars that resembles the logo of the iconic Star Trek series.

Strange chevron markings were captured in a sand dune on the Red Planet by the space agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), reports CBS News.

The MRO HiRISE (High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera team at the University of Arizona released details of the images earlier this week.

“Enterprising viewers will make the discovery that these features looks conspicuously like a famous logo,” the team said in a statement.

Scientists believe the shapes on Mars were created by wind, lava and dunes.

They were originally formed as large crescent-shaped dunes that were surrounded by lava following an eruption. After solidifying, wind blew over them knocki
ng over much of the sand.

‘Footprints’ were left on the surface, also known as ‘dune casts’.

The original Star Trek series aired on television in 1966 and has gained a cult following. Over the years, there have been spin-off TV series, films and animated series.

It followed the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of his starship, the USS Enterprise.

The chevron symbol was worn on the crews’ clothing and featured in other scenes.

Veteran actor William Shatner, who played the first Captain Kirk, used the markings on Mars to call out rival franchise Star Wars.

In a tweet, he declared how Star Trek ‘reached’ the Red Planet first, boasting “We beat you”.

Now they need to find a Star Wars logo somewhere.
Stardates 51663.65 through 69: Following detection of a low-risk cluster of previously undocumented vapour signatures in an anomalous region of the Delta quadrant, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E engaged and wiped out ALL major Star Wars universe combat spacecraft with several standard phaser attack protocols and alternating photon torpedo spreads; while all senior Rebellion/Jedi Order/New Galactic Empire military personnel were sanitised during a total of 4 away team missions under the overall command of Lt Cmdr Data.

The "force" and other such paraphernalia have not been heard from or detected on long or short range scanners since.
