COLOMBO, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Despite the military defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka in 2009, the country's prime minister warned on Wednesday that the overseas network of the terrorist outfit was still intact.

Addressing the Sri Lankan parliament Wednesday, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said there were reports that the terrorists were attempting to regroup as an organization.

A brutal 30 year conflict came to an end with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers in May 2009 and the death of the Tamil Tiger leader Vellupillai Prabakaran.

However, Tamil Tiger supporters and activists are openly operating in several western countries, according to local media.

Sri Lankan authorities will continue to investigate activities of the Tamil Tigers despite the end of the conflict, D.M. Jayaratne told the parliament.

He said that Sri Lankan police was looking for Tamil Tiger remnants who may have fled the war zone during the final stages of the conflict and crossed over to the Sinhalese dominated south.

Sri Lankan PM says Tamil Tigers still active

Not saying the Assembly of Tamil Nadu is 'terrorist' but the recently passed Resolution is a powerful statement backing the Tamils inside Sri Lanka.

The Hindu : States / Tamil Nadu : Assembly passes special resolution seeking economic sanctions on Sri Lanka

The Assembly on Wednesday passed a special resolution demanding that the Centre take action to get all those responsible for large-scale civilian deaths, during the Sri Lankan civil war, declared as ‘war criminals' by the United Nations.

The resolution, passed unanimously, also demanded economic sanctions against the island nation to pressure the country into giving equal status and dignity to Tamils.

It demanded that the Indian government impress on the United Nations that the perpetrators of all such crimes be designated as ‘war criminals' and that the Union government should take steps, along with other countries, to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka until all Tamils now staying in camps in Sri Lanka are rehabilitated in their own land and given an opportunity to lead a life of dignity with rights equal to those of the Sinhalese.

The resolution said that after Sri Lanka attained independence, Tamils were treated as second class citizens and the Sri Lankan government, instead of conceding their demands for dignity, equal rights and self-respect, sought to destroy the community. It noted that the report of a committee appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General had concluded that the island government was responsible for the killing of innocent civilians through widespread shelling and bombing; bombing of inhabited areas and hospitals; denial of humanitarian aid, violating the human rights of the internally displaced, suspected LTTE members and other victims of the war and perpetrating human rights violations against even those outside the war-hit areas, including the government's critics and the media.

.....

“The [UN] committee has not called (Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa or anybody else as war criminals. That is why we have demanded in this resolution that the Union government should convince the United Nations to declare as ‘war criminals' all those who perpetrated such crimes,” she said.

the UN rhetoric is nonsense in my opinion and quite unfair.....where are the resolutions condemning the tamils and their 25+ year insurgency (read WAR) against the Sri Lankan state!

they posed a major existential threat to the island nation; those buggers even had their own navy and ''air force''

for Gods sakes...

Well, there is a lot of truth in 'One's terrorists are other's Freedom Fighters'.
The Tamils in Sri Lanka perceived themselves as being discriminated against and organizations like LTTE stepped in.

Anyway, I think the Tamil Nadu assembly resolution is a powerful one. There is an implicit threat to bring even the SL President to the UN for 'War Crimes' in that Resolution.
Don't know enough about the Indian politics to know the impact it can have on the Indian policies. I mean if India can sway Americans in Afghanistan then they can do that to SL as well?

Well; that resolution is for local population feeding... at center level India wont take any action against Srilanka as it does not want to alienate Srilanka & force it to move close to China.

If they want a peaceful live, that will be great.

If they want to take part in terrorist activities again, kill them.

There was a change of government recently in Tamil Nadu. The Chief Minister Jayalalitha who traditionally didn't care much about the Tamil issue and was staunchly anti-LTTE now wants to show that she is as "Tamil" as her opposition leader by passing these resolutions. Just an eye wash.

lankan Tamils still not got/given their equal rights in lanka , why their is a delay from govt ?
if over 18% of Lanka's population (3.8 Million) deprived of their rights , there will be unrest ..
