South Korea’s online purchases from Chinese products have been surging amid growing appetite for cheaper, but quality-satisfying gadgets.

According to online shopping mall platform eBay Korea operating Gmarket and Auction on Tuesday, online direct purchases from China by Koreans jumped 37 percent in terms of value against a year-ago period in the first quarter, taking up 33 percent of the total purchases.

Market experts said the growth of transaction volume was largely driven by changes in customers’ attitude towards Chinese goods that offer improved reliability in quality despite the competitive prices. Xiaomi’s air purifier Mi Air 2 is available at 120,000 won ($105.03) on online direct purchases, 37 percent cheaper than the average price of similar products in domestic brands.

Favorite items were sound systems with sales quintupling on year, contributing the most to the growth. Direct buys in smartphones also gained 64 percent, and seasonal home appliances 63 percent.

On rising demand, eBay Korea expanded its short delivery policy for direct buys to the Chinese market from this year. Products shipped from China are now prepared within three days of its order.
