AFRICAN National Congress (ANC) members and leaders should not travel to Israel as the party is in solidarity with the people of Palestine, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday.

“(We are) joining the call for (a) cultural, academic and education boycott of Israel, including travel bans for members and leaders of the ANC, the alliance, members of Cabinet, Members of Parliament and government officials,” Mr Mantashe told reporters in Johannesburg.

“Companies that do business in the occupied territory, such as Cape Gate, G4Security and Caterpillar, must not be allowed to do business with the state.

“Goods manufactured in the occupied territory should be boycotted.”

Mr Mantashe was providing feedback following the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend.

He said the NEC also agreed to support government initiatives and the special envoys appointed to facilitate peace processes in Lesotho, South Sudan and Sri Lanka.

South African retailer Woolworths earlier in September became the target of a boycott by various groups after reports that it continued to stock food sourced from Israel, and that some products had been produced in Palestine, but labelled “Made in Israel”.

In August, President Jacob Zuma ended a keynote speech to US business with a strong condemnation of Israel’s use of its military might in Gaza.
