Shanghai Disney Resort on Track to Become China's No.1 Attraction

Well I think they estimated 10 million for the first year (which is pretty low for China's population) and they hope to break even. This is definitely a long term investment to get to 15M a year. To put things in perspective Disney World opened in 1971 with around 11 million people in the first year. Today it is 20M+. They also opened other parks next door to Disney World (Epcot, Hollywood etc) and all combined they do 50M+.

give us more financials and quantitative estimations like sales forecast; agreed-upon franchise fees and relevant costs structures ... before I can comment on whether the BE can be reached. Appreciated

Why Disney's Shanghai Success Supports Theme Park Thesis For The House Of Mouse

enchanted_storybook_castle_of_shanghai_disneyland.jpg

What role will Walt Disney Co theme parks, particularly Shanghai Disney, contribute to Disney's stock?

According to UBS's Doug Mitchelson, Disney's Shanghai park will drive 29 percent of the EBIT growth for Disney's Parks division through 2021. As a whole, Disney's Parks segment will drive 67 percent of Disney's total EBIT growth over the same time period.

Shanghai Disney opened in June of 2016 but reports as soon as October suggested that the park is "no blockbuster." However, this isn't necessarily the same sentiment today, at least according to the analyst.

Mitchelson explained his positive outlook on Disney's Parks comes from two data sets which confirm healthy trends. First, Satellite Photogrammetry was used to measure parking lot utilization and Network Traffic Analysis was used to gauge park attraction wait times.

Both of these metrics signaled that attendance at Disney's Park in Shanghai "built steadily" through the fall and winter and into a "very strong" Chinese New Year.

Are Parks Being Ignored?
Mitchelson noted much of the attention among investors is focused on Disney's film slate. As such, investors may be underestimating Disney's Parks segment and the contributions it makes.

The analyst emphasized the fact that Disney is in the middle of an "aggressive" but also "attractive" investment cycle in its Parks segment. This will drive a 10 percent EBIT compounded annual growth rate within the segment "well into the next decade."

Hong Kong Disneyland has reported its second straight year in the red, with a HK$171 million loss for 2016, as it grapples with fewer mainland tourists visiting the city.

The figure was worse than the HK$148 million hole the park posted in 2015.

Visitor numbers at the theme park on Lantau Island dropped 10 per cent to 6.1 million during the year ending in October, dragged down by a 21 per cent slump in the number of visitors from the mainland, which stood at 2.2 million.

The park’s new managing director, Samuel Lau Wing-kee, blamed the poor performance on the mainland’s economic downturn, unfavourable currency conditions, cold and wet weather and stiff regional competition.

But he stopped short of attributing the mainland visitor decline to competition from Disney’s Shanghai park, which opened in June.

“China’s market is big enough to accommodate two Disneylands,” he said.

The news was not all bad however, with Lau saying the park’s performance showed a gradual improvement in the past six to eight months.

The park hosted more overseas visitors, who tended to be bigger spenders, and introduced Hollywood-blockbuster-themed attractions including Star Wars and Marvel superhero rides – a world-first for the park.

“We have seen signs of a turnaround in the past few months, but the environment is still challenging,” Lau said.

The theme park has posted losses for eight of the last 11 years since it opened, according to its financial filings, only recording profits at the peak of the city’s tourism boom from 2012 to 2014.

Mainland visitors, who used to account for half of Disneyland’s total attendance at their peak in 2012 and 2013, represented only 36 per cent of visitors last year. The number of local visitors exceeded their mainland counterparts for the first time since 2009, accounting for 39 per cent.

Visitors from Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand recorded growth of more than 20 per cent last year.

Lau said overseas visitors tended to stay longer and spend more at Disneyland. Last year, spending per head at the park grew four per cent.

To boost its hotel business, Lau said Disneyland would further pursue the market for meetings, conferences and exhibitions, and invite companies to hold activities at the park’s hotels.

Polytechnic University academic Brian King said Disneyland’s poor performance reflected the overall economic situation in Hong Kong, and there had been “similar disappointment at Ocean Park”.

The legislator for the tourism sector, Yiu Si-wing, said he hoped the park would do better this year.

Police put squeeze on scalpers at Shanghai Disney

Shanghai police detained 177 ticket scalpers at the city's Disney Resort over the three-day May Day holiday.

On April 29 alone, the first day of the holiday, about 70 scalpers were caught, police said.

The scalpers, who flew to Shanghai from across the country, were selling fast passes for park rides for about 100 yuan ($15) to tourists unwilling to wait up to three hours in line.

"We try to catch these scalpers on peak days like May Day, while on other days police will figure out other ways to break the operation," said Shen Qing, public security chief at Shanghai Disney Resort.

The detained scalpers were lectured about the regulations during an eight-hour session, and promised they wouldn't engage in improper activities. They were also asked to write a letter of repentance.

Scalpers, commonly seen outside venues including hospitals, train stations and popular performances, buy tickets or book appointments in advance and then sell them at inflated prices.

At Shanghai Disney, one of the country's most popular holiday destinations, scalpers smelled an opportunity, both at the gate and inside the park, where the park gives priority passes for rides.

Police said scalpers have a clear division of labor: Some will identify target customers, while others stand in line inside the park to get fast passes to be sold later. These scalpers typically hold season tickets, so the cost of each entry into the park is low, police said.

However, many tourists found that they could not use the fast passes because they could only be used in conjunction with the gate tickets they bought.

To catch the scalpers, plainclothes police officers walked around the ticket office and the main entrance, and located scalping partners who lined up inside the park.

Shen said the number of scalpers at the resort is decreasing, but simply trying to control their behavior won't solve the problem.

"We now spend more time negotiating with Shanghai Disney Resort's representatives and asking them to strengthen their internal management, such as checking ticket information carefully," Shen said.

SHANGHAI Disney Resort has received over 10 million visitors since its grand opening in June 2016, the resort announced today.

The milestone was reached in just under 11 months after the resort’s opening, making it the most popular theme park opened in China.

It is the result of the "incredible popularity" of Shanghai Disneyland with guests from across China and around the world, the management of the resort said.

The resort today also announced to start a month-long first anniversary celebration, leading up to a major celebration in the resort’s theme park on June 16 with themed décor, limited merchandise and special dining experiences.

Starting May 24, guests are also encouraged to share their special memories in their first-year visits to the resort on the resort’s official social media account. Disney fans who submit their memories will have the chance to be selected and invited as special guests at the first anniversary event on June 16.

“The resort’s rapidly growing popularity and extremely high levels of guest satisfaction add to our confidence in the growing demand for our attractions and entertainment," said Philippe Gas, general manager of the resort. It has announced its first expansion with the addition of Toy Story Land, set to open in 2018.

The resort has hired over 10,000 employees, known as the Cast Members, from Shanghai and across China, and generated thousands of additional indirect jobs for tourism and cultural industry professionals, the resort said today.

The resort’s attractions and live entertainment have also been recognized by top global and China awards from Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), Visual Effects Society (VES) to China Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (CAAPA).

I think they use Chinese women for the stage show princesses and the Australian women for princesses who pose for pictures next to kids for authenticity due to parent demands.

No, both Aussie, there is another ads from the casting agency for Singer/Performer from Australia.

I think all of them are Aussie.

Hmm...looks like people aren't happy seeing locals dressed as Princesses even on stage. Interesting that they simply don't import Russians on the cheap. Maybe their accent raises eyebrows.
