Schäuble: 'No free lunch' for UK in Brexit talks
Germany's finance minister has backed a 'hard Brexit' negotiating stance ahead of a summit in Brussels. He has also said that Germany should not pay more money to the EU to cover the gaps once the UK leaves.

Great Britain should not expect to have advantages other European Union countries do not have German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said on Saturday ahead of a summit in Brussels with the 27 remaining states.

The United Kingdom should not expect to have special advantages once negotiations over its departure from the European Union are over, Schäuble said in an interview on Saturday.

"There is no free lunch," Schäuble told the Funke Media Group, using an English expression. "Britons must know that."

Speaking ahead of a summit on Brexit negations in Brussels, Schäuble urged that a future deal should ensure that the remaining 27 EU countries are not weakened when the UK leaves.

German companies want a soft Brexit
"We don't want to weaken Britain. But we also don't want that the rest of Europe is weakened," the finance minister said. "Great Britain should not have advantages after the exit, that other countries don't have."

Germany shouldn't fill UK gaps

In the interview, Schäuble also urged for the UK to fulfill its outstanding financial commitments to the EU. At the same time, he said that his ideal scenario would not involve Germany bumping up its own contributions to the bloc after the UK leaves.

"Germany shouldn't pay more money to the EU after Brexit," Schäuble said. "The money in the EU budget must suffice - it must be spent more efficiently than now."

He added that he believes there's still room in the budget to accommodate the shortfall after Brexit.

Schäuble's comments are in line with a speech made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel this week in which she warned the UK not to expect to enjoy EU rights after Brexit.

She also insisted that the bloc would only begin to agree on future ties with Britain after agreeing on a deal for the UK to formally divorce the EU. British Prime Minister Theresa May said that Merkel's remarks underscored how difficult the negotiations will be.

EU member states are meeting in Brussels without the UK on Saturday and are expected to adopt guidelines for negotiations on Brexit.

To be frank with all the right wing parties winning the election in other european countries who want exit from EU Brussel will want to make an example out of UK...So that other European partners are forced to think twice before leaving the European Union...Otherwise Frexit and Italexit are just around the corner...

After Britain, Germany has no choice but to declare rest of the Europe as one country/empire/entity/colony, as no other country is in the position to sustain the union. Scandinavians will be silent as in past, France will be the first to run away. Germany is the only country I see in this situation sincere with the union idea. Whole the Europe requires mechanization like Germany to survive 21st century.
Willkommen alles Europa im Deutshland.:welcome:

If Macron wins it aint happening
Actually he may be in favor of EU, but overall european and french economic conditions are making the idea of EU heavy. I will reiterate that whole Europe requires mechanization like Germany, economically and socially. Hip-hop, lazy and free loader countries, aren't simply suitable for the idea of EU. Germany must take over either whole the scene or there will be no scene at all.

Pay Germans... Pay more money 'cause Brits give no fvcking cent to the Union :D

Actually the support for EU has strengthened here after Brexit.

Germany has a strong manufacturing base and much larger population, whereas UK is a mainly services-based economy which relies on the movement of people.

The bus was wrong

We haven't left yet. Why are you pro EU? o_O

We were, and still are the biggest net contributor to the EU gravy train, sorry budget. I found it hilarious when May shot down the idea of a budget increase, which then sent the EU states into fight mode with each other i.e. net contributors v those who well don't contribute nothing. We won't miss this at all.

Well if Tresseme survives the election it doesnt matter she'll loot any 'savings' we made anyways. Brexit had a lot of opportunities but this retarded government is just pushing its coorporate agenda in the chaos. Im sure we could have saved more if we just made companies pay their taxes in full and stop spending on overpriced redundant weapons.

kiyon key jinko eu nahi pasand unko sanwali chamri bhi nahi pasand aur ye sab sey bari wajah thi EU chroney ki
Some incidences were really funny though like Jamaicans complaining about immigration :woot: That was pure gold
Pro Brexit quwaton ki wajah sey Pakistani expats ko issues ho rahein hain uk mein plus a weaker British economy is bad for Pakistan its a huge export market for us plus with hard costly Brexit on the table(which UK has to pay in Euros :D ) entire world will be affected by the toll Brexit will take on British economy

We haven't left yet
SO UK isgoing in reverse mode on Brexit?
Germany wants Brexit to be as costly as possible so no one dares talk about leaving EU ever again the super angry EU will dig deep into UK,s pocket
