Saudi Arabia invites rival Iran for talks on Haj return

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has invited regional rival Iran to discuss a return of its nationals to next year’s Haj after Iranians were excluded from the pilgrimage following a major diplomatic row, reports said on Friday.

The Al-Hayat daily reported that Riyadh’s pilgrims minister Mohammed Bentin had opened discussions with more than 80 countries, including Iran, to work out the details of the 2017 Haj.

“Iran’s Haj delegation was invited to come to the kingdom” for preparations, the paper said.

The Arab News daily said Riyadh would welcome pilgrims for Haj and the smaller umrah rite “irrespective of their nationalities or sectarian affiliations, including Iranian pilgrims”.

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in this year’s Haj, but Iranians stayed at home after tensions between Riyadh and Tehran boiled over following a deadly stampede during the 2015 pilgrimage.

Iran says it lost 464 people in the crush outside Makkah.

They were among more than 2,300 people killed in the worst ever disaster to strike the Haj.

Shia Iran and predominantly Sunni Saudi Arabia are at odds over a raft of regional issues, notably the conflicts in Syria and Yemen in which they support opposing sides.

Riyadh cut ties with Tehran in January after Iranian demonstrators torched its embassy and a consulate following its execution of a prominent Shia cleric.

a good move by Riyadh, put aside your petty differences
Conspiring to sabotage Hajj is no petty matter !!!
Iran regime always go to hajj with bad intent.
Let's see how they behave this year. I would still advise Hajji's from Pakistan to stand clear of Iran mob.

Money talks. That's for sure Iranian haji lavish shoppers . They spend money like crazy on shopping and stay in the most expensive hotels.

Last hajj was their last sabotage but there's a long history.

Its a well known fact that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was an agent of Iran.

You are the same guy who was claiming Persian Gulf doesn't exist and again claiming 2015 Mina stampede was done by Iranian pilgrims. Do you have any proof for it ?

Here are some facts about 2015 Mina stampede:

- The Saudi government claims only 769 deaths, while Independent estimates range between 2,236 and 2,431 killed.

- Governor of Mecca Province and Saudi Arabia's head of the central Hajj committee, Prince Khalid bin Faisal Al Saud, blamed the crush outside the holy city on "some pilgrims with African nationalities"; prompting condemnation from several African leaders

- Saudi Grand Mufti's Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh characterized the incident as "beyond human control", "inevitable", and attributable to "fate".

- Salman al-Ouda, a Saudi cleric said that "Riyadh regime should be held accountable for the crush, adding that Saudi rulers cannot evade their responsibility by labeling the tragedy as an act of God." He called on media outlets to cover the incident with full transparency.

Cause of incident explained by an eyewitness:

Alhaji Samaila Dabai Yombe, Deputy Governor of the Nigerian state of Kebbi, who was present at the incident, stated that the deaths happened due to a blockage of the route to Jamaraat Bridge. "What actually happened was that all the pilgrims scheduled to throw Jamrat at that time were channeled to one particular street. At a time we got to a certain point around 8:00am, a military vehicle was set across to create a barrier and then some of the Saudi soldiers were standing by, suggesting that you cannot go beyond that point. About 5,000 people coming from the same direction were not aware of the road block in front, which resulted to a tight and stationary human traffic, which made it very difficult for us to even stand. So, we continued to squat to make room for fresh air while the temperature was about 47 degrees Celsius. Pilgrims, in efforts to get fresh air, attempted to scale fences of tents on both sides of the road. Very few succeeded, while most people just succumb to the situation. It was at this juncture that we saw dead bodies piling up around us".
