LAHORE: The body of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner convicted for his alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Pakistan, was flown to India from the Lahore airport.
Earlier today, the body was handed over to officials from the Indian consulate. Singh's body was to be taken to Amritsar in a special Indian airliner plane.
Singh, who was critically injured by fellow prisoners at the Kot Lakhpat Jail on April 26, died of cardiac arrest at the Jinnah Hospital late on Wednesday night shortly after his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) dropped.
Singh was attacked by two inmates Amir Tanba and Mudasir in the Kot Lakhpat jail when he left his barracks for a stroll.
Singh was convicted for his alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab that killed 14 people in 1990. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and by former president Pervez Musharraf.
His family had insisted he was a farmer who became a victim of mistaken identity after inadvertently straying across the border while drunk.
Singh's wife, two daughters and a sister, who were recently in Lahore to inquire after his condition, had returned to India on Tuesday.
