Russia's 'Star Wars' missiles defy US 'threats

Talks of a new spatial Cold War gain momentum over Russia's preparations to build missiles capable of containing US 'threats' from outer space.

Russian air force has announced plans to fully restructure the country's aerospace defense mechanism in a bid to counter possible strikes on the country.

Head of Russia's Air Force, General Alexander Zelin, publicized the scheme on Tuesday, noting, "We are building new missiles capable of protecting us not only against air-defense but also space-based systems."

He told reporters that the new decision to overhaul the country's aerospace defense has been made to deter 'threats' from 'any' nation on Russian soil.

"By 2030...foreign countries, particularly the United States, will be able to deliver coordinated high-precision strikes from air and space against any target on the whole territory of Russia," Kremlin's security authority said.

The Russian general deemed the space-based threats on Russia as 'real' and 'not virtual,' adding that Moscow will have to revamp its aerial protection system by 2020 or run the risk of space-born attacks.

"That is why the main goal of the development of the Russian Air Force until 2020 is to create a new branch of the Armed Forces, which would form the core of the country's air and space defenses to provide a reliable deterrent during peacetime, and repel any military aggression with the use of conventional and nuclear arsenals in a time of war," Zelin explained.

Russia's decision to transform the country's defense structure comes only a day after the United States launched its global strike command in order to coordinate all its conventional and non-conventional weapons engagement.

Russia's new protection scheme is aimed at devising anti-missile mechanisms intended to destroy cruise and ballistic rockets along with hypersonic and stealth aircrafts.

"In line with the new air-space defense concept, we have already formed a number of brigades, which will be armed with S-400 and S-500 air defense systems," the air force chief told a news conference.

"We are planning to conduct a gradual transition of Air Force units to a constant combat-ready status...and accomplish this task by 2020," he went on to say.

Russia has already developed aerial interceptors capable of blowing up high-velocity mid-air targets at distances exceeding 400 kilometers.

Observers have likened the recent developments in US-Russia competitions over space control to the period after the World War II when the two rivals engaged in an arms race for around 45 years in order to obtain more leverage in the international arena.

Analysts say that the latest episode in relations between the former adversaries is a harbinger of a similar era of near-combat status when the two states had launched their versions of the Strategic Defense Initiative, informally known as the 'Star Wars' in order to quell threats posed by each nation.link
