That's even worse than a random twitter account. This is such a clumsy and obvious piece of fake news, it's part of a concerted wave of propaganda coming out of Moscow.

News agencies are just repeating the fake news story originating from the Russian MOD.

Has anyone from the US side denied this? Or that mil attaché wasn’t called by the MOD?

This is nuclear powered submarine. It's 3.45 billion $ a piece. It will invite attack by whole U.S navy if Russia damage it.
Same say about the american who did nothing when Iran fired ballistic missile at US Iraq base.

This hasn’t been reported anywhere on the US side. Russian reports are highly dubious to say the least.
Why US will report it since it's so embarrassed about it for them.

F-22 just answered your question. I'm no expert on ASW, but the problem with the story is the part where the Russian frigate 'fired' upon the Virginia class sub. There is only one weapon they could have fired at a submerged sub with (a torpedoe) and you don't fire warning shots with them. Also, how did they know it was a Virginia class sub, its unlikely the Russians or any of their allies have recorded their accoustic signature.

And how exactly did they communicate instructions to leave the area to a submerged sub?

Russian frigate are well known to install anti-sub depth charge, They could have fire one in near vicinity as warning.
