Russia to sell jets, air defense systems to Syria

The head of Russia's arms-trading agency says the nation has signed contracts to deliver fighter jets, air defense systems and armored vehicles to Syria.

Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation chief Mikhail Dmitriyev said Russia will sell MiG-29 fighter jets, Pantsyr short-range air defense systems and armored vehicles. He didn't give any numbers or provide any further details.

The statement late Friday carried by Russian news agencies confirmed earlier media reports that worried Israel.

Previous Russian sales of advanced anti-tank missiles and other weapons to Syria have irked Israel, which said that some landed in the hands of the militant group Hezbollah.

MOSCOW - Russia is supplying Syria with warplanes, armored vehicles and air defense systems under existing contracts, ITAR-Tass News Agency quoted the head of the country's state military agency as saying.

Mikhail Dmitriyev, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, said Russia was selling Syria MiG-29 fighter jets, Pantsir short-range air defense systems and armored vehicles.

President Dmitry Medvedev this week paid the first-ever visit by a head of state from Moscow to Damascus, where he said the use of nuclear energy "may get a second wind" in Syria - a remark that prompted concern from Washington.

Russia's arms sales and possible nuclear cooperation with Syria, which has close ties to Iran, is unnerving for Israel and the U.S., which earlier this month renewed sanctions on Syria for another year, accusing it of supporting "terrorist" groups.

Russia is also in talks to supply NATO member Turkey, which Medvedev also visited this week, with air defense systems and helicopters, Dmitriyev said.

"It is unclear what will happen, what Turkey would agree to," the news agency quoted him as saying.

Syrians are stupid they should Buy SU30's , Mig 29's times have gone.

They can only buy whatever is offered to them. Russia is not really a very reliable ally of any country other than India. They have the habit of stopping the supply of spare-parts in the middle of a crisis.

It depends on what kind of Mig-29 variant, if we, for instance, look at the carrier based Mig-29K it has little commonality to older Mig-29's. The Mig-29k has AESA radar, new engines, full glass cockpit and all new avionics. If the Migs don't come with the latest avionics than yes the Syrians made a mistake by not choosing the SU-30.
