ARLINGTON, Va. — Russia’s navy has become the newest to launch combat strikes from an aircraft carrier, according to press reports, joining the tiny club of navies that have launched carrier aircraft into combat.

The Russian carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which is deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, launched strikes in Syria against rebel targets on Nov. 15, according to the Associated Press and Sputnik International. The carrier’s air wing includes MiG-29 and Su-33 jet fighters. The ship lost one MiG-29 on Nov. 13 in a mishap; the pilot ejected safely and was rescued.

Russia joins the United States and France as nations that have launched aircraft into combat in recent years. India, which is building a new carrier, INS Vikrant, operates the former Soviet carrier Admiral Gorshkov, now named INS Vikramaditya. India last flew its carrier aircraft in combat operations in 1971.

The United Kingdom currently has no aircraft carriers, having retired its combat-veteran Invincible class, but is building two Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. Italy operates Harrier jets from its carriers Giuseppe Garibaldiand Cavour. Brazil operates fixed-wing aircraft from the São Paulo. Thailand operates Harriers from HTMS Chakri Naruebet. Spain decommissioned its Harrier carrier, Príncipe de Asturias, in 2013.

China declared on Nov. 15 its first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, as combat ready.

She set out with 10 SU-33K fighters, 4 MiG-29K fighter.
Now down to 3 Mig-29K (-25% of Migs, and -7% total ).

Most important is the analysis for capability of new weapons ,all the rest is exercise on real combat duty.

They don't need Su-33 of Mig9K for that, what with Su-30, Su-34 and Su-35 on the ground in Syria.

I agree with your conclusion, but we can only guess what's going on in that old ship and what kind of impact will have all kind of measurements in future warfares...

That flottilla is mainly there to provide extended AAW at sea, protecting incoming shipments from Russia to Syria. The key element is the Kirov cruiser, the Kuznetsov can provide an additional AD element. And in the meantime, when not used for AD, it can do some ground strikes. And all these items now get the label 'combat proven', which is great for marketing Russian weapony abroad.
