PM orders withdrawal of anti-labour laws

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday directed the withdrawal of anti-labour ordinances, including the Removal from Service Ordinance and the Section 27-B of the Companies Ordinance.
The prime ministers direction came during the Workers Convention in connection with the second phase of the Benazir Stock Option Scheme at the Convention Centre here.
The Workers Convention 2009 was attended by hundreds of workers, trade union representatives and labour leaders from all over the country, who continued to raise PPP slogans and cheered during the event.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said the PPP government was committed to ensuring a system that could provide equal opportunities to every citizen for his welfare and betterment.
He said the government was committed to eliminating economic disparity and form a system based on justice and equity that could lead to sustainable democracy. Referring to various steps taken by the government for the welfare of the people, he said these were aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of the people and strengthening the national economy.
He announced various development schemes for the welfare of workers, including construction of 37 new schools, upgrading of 36 schools, setting up of 23 new hospitals, including a trauma centre, for them.
Referring to the Benazir Stock Option Scheme, the prime minister said it had been launched to involve the workers in the national development by giving them shares in their companies. Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira said despite apprehensions, the stock scheme had taken off and had fulfilled the long-standing dream of the workers of Pakistan.
He said thousands of acres of uncultivated lands will soon be distributed among the landless farmers, so that more tracts were brought under cultivation that would significantly boost the agricultural yield.
Minister for Labour Syed Khurshid Shah said the scheme was aimed at giving shares to workers in their respective units so that they had a sense of ownership and worked hard to increase productivity.
